Trading was volatile on Friday on the New York Stock Exchange, as a better-than-expected US jobs report and hints of progress in Europe's debt crisis gave some relief after a steep sell-off a day earlier sent global markets in a nose dive. Stock Market Crash - Flash Crash May 6, 2010

03:39
Audio from the S&P 500 futures pit at the CME during the "flash crash" of 2010. The May 6, 2010 Flash Crash also known as The Crash of 2:45, the 2010 Flash Crash or just simply, the Flash Crash, was a United States stock market crash on May 6, 2010 in which the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged about 900 points—or about nine percent—only to recover those losses within minutes. It was the second largest point swing, 1,010.14 points, and the biggest one-day point decline, 998.5 points, on an intraday basis in Dow Jones Industrial Average history. On May 6, US stock markets opened down and trended down most of the day on worries about the debt crisis in Greece. At 2:42 pm, with the Dow Jones down more than 300 points for the day, the equity market began to fall rapidly, dropping more than 600 points in 5 minutes for an almost 1000 point loss on the day by 2:47 pm. Twenty minutes later, by 3:07 pm, the market had regained most of the 600 point drop.

What is the stock market? Win $500 and practice stock trading in our Fall Contest today! https://www.wallstreetsurvivor.com/register?utm_source=Youtube&utm_medium=VideoLink&utm_campaign=FallContest The stock market exists so that companies can raise money without incurring any debt (such is the case of a loan). They issue shares of their company to the public in what is known as an Initial Public Offering (IPO). Investors buy and sell these shares (or stocks) to one another on the stock exchange, thus making stock prices move up and down. If there are more people buying a stock than people selling it, the price goes up with the demand. If more people are selling than there are people buying a stock, that’s a sign that the company is unfavorable to own and the stock price drops. A stock exchange is where investors trade their shares of companies to one another. That’s why stock prices are constantly changing. Stock exchanges bring all these investors together, so that trades happen in a central and regulated place. There are hundreds of stock exchanges all over the world. In the U.S., the top stock exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE), the NASDAQ, and the American Stock Exchange (AMEX). Each of these exchanges have different companies trading on them. For example, NASDAQ is known for technological companies. Most of the tech stocks out there trade on the NASDAQ stock exchange. NYSE Deutsche Boerse to create stock market behemoth

01:13
The owners of the New York and Frankfurt stock exchanges plan to merge, in a move that would create the world's largest owner of equities and derivatives markets. The $10.2 billion deal is a response to the increasing globalization and electronification of trading. To be sure, the merger must first clear regulatory hurdles and other potential obstacles raised by competitors to stop it. But it is likely to go through, and could further consolidation among the world's markets. While these mergers make headlines, equities trading is small fish. Derivatives trading is where the action is. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Daily videos brought to you by THE Taiwanese Animators behind the infamous Tiger Woods animation. A Stock Market Big Enough to Stretch Across the Atlantic

04:01
I'm Alex Villarreal with the VOA Special English Economics Report, from http://voaspecialenglish.com | http://facebook.com/voalearningenglish A ten-billion-dollar deal aims to create the world's largest exchange company. The plan would combine the operators of the New York Stock Exchange and Germany's Frankfurt Stock Exchange. The two companies, NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Borse, announced the agreement in February. Deutsche Borse shareholders would own about sixty percent of the combined group. One thing it still needs is a name. The new company would have headquarters in Frankfurt and New York City. The New York Stock Exchange is the world's most famous stock market and a symbol of American capitalism. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner says New York will remain at the heart of the world's financial system for a long time to come. But the exchange business has changed in these days of high-speed trading by computers in a globally connected economy. The Big Board now has to compete with smaller exchanges. Where stocks are traded has become less important than how much those trades cost.NYSE Euronext and Deutsche Borse had profits of almost four and a half billion dollars last year. They expect to save four hundred million dollars a year by combining their operations. These savings could lower the cost of stock orders. But the size of the company could raise concerns about competition in the exchange industry. The new company would also have trading operations in Britain, France and other European countries.Stock trading and other financial services would remain important to the combined company. But much of its income is expected to come from trading complex financial products called derivatives. The deal requires approval by American and European officials and by shareholders. Other exchange operators, like the CME Group, could try to offer a higher price for NYSE Euronext. The CME Group, operator of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, is one of the world's largest traders of derivatives. Duncan Niederauer, chief executive of NYSE Euronext, is expected to keep that job in the new company. He says combining with Deutsche Borse will make the company more competitive. In February, the operators of the London and Toronto stock exchanges announced a deal to combine their companies. And in October the Singapore Exchange offered to merge with Australia's exchange. For VOA Special English I'm Alex Villarreal. (Adapted from a radio program broadcast 18Feb2011)

High Frequency Stock & Options Market Maker Trading Platform

14:04
http://www.StockMarketFunding.com High Frequency Stock & Options Market Maker Trading Platform. Best Trading Software Stock & Options Trading Platform. In this live "stock market" selloff video we're featuring how our trading platform works during "High Frequency Trading" during periods of "High Volume" which create "Flash Trades" with Market Volatility. Learn how to trade against "high frequency trading" and understand how it creates huge moves for bulls and bears in recent market volatility. High frequency trading (HFT) is the use of sophisticated technological tools to trade securities like stocks or options, and is typically characterized by several distinguishing features. By 2010 High Frequency Trading accounted for over 70% of equity trades taking place in the US and was rapidly growing in popularity in Europe and Asia. Aiming to capture just a fraction of a penny per share or currency unit on every trade, high-frequency traders move in and out of such short-term positions several times each day. Yesterday, after the FOMC Meeting, we saw "flash traders" move in and took the Dow Jones down 200 points before switching and ripping the markets 643 points off the lows. Today, we saw flash traders come back into the markets and sellers took the markets down 437.6 points very quickly. There has been critisim regarding the SEC and their lack of enforcement in regulating these trades. We've seen flash trades creating latency issues in the trades and even the fastest computers are getting delayed data because these trades are hitting the tape extremely fast. In the early 2000s, high-frequency trading still accounted for less than 10% of equity orders, but this proportion was soon to begin rapid growth. According to data from the NYSE, High Frequency Trading grew by about 164% between 2005 and 2009. By value, HFT was estimated in 2010 by consultancy Tabb Group to make up 56% of equity trades in the US and 38% in Europe. Many high frequency firms are market makers and provide liquidity to the market, which has lowered volatility and helped narrow Bid-offer spreads making trading and investing cheaper for other market participants. The speeds of computer connections, measured in milliseconds or microseconds, have become important. More fully automated markets such as NASDAQ, Direct Edge, and BATS, in the US, have gained market share from less automated markets such as the NYSE. Economies of scale in electronic trading have contributed to lowering commissions and trade processing fees, and contributed to international mergers and consolidation of financial exchanges. The brief but dramatic stock market crash of May 6, 2010 was originally alleged to be caused by high-frequency trading. High-frequency trading has been the subject of intense public focus since regulators claimed these practices as contributing to volatility on May 6, 2010, popularly known as the 2010 Flash Crash, a United States stock market crash on May 6, 2010 in which the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged to its largest intraday point loss, but not percentage loss in history, only to recover much of those losses within minutes. Another area of controversy, related to SEC and CFTC findings in its joint report on the Flash Crash that equity market "market makers and other liquidity providers widened their quote spreads, others reduced offered liquidity, and a significant number withdrew completely from the markets" during the Flash Crash is whether high-frequency market makers should be subject to regulations that would require them to stay active in volatile markets. NYSE Traders sing "Wait 'Till the Sun Shines, Nellie" - December 23, 2011

01:17
At exactly 2:15 p.m. today, a boisterous, upbeat tune floated over the din of the usual trading floor murmurs and tickers. And though NYSE traders have come together on Christmas Eve and the last trading day of the year for more than 70 years to sing the Golden Memory Boys' "Wait Till The Sun Shines Nellie," the words still resonate today: Wait till the sun shines, Nellie When the clouds to drifting by. We will be happy, Nellie, Don't you sigh. Down Lover's Lane we'll wander Sweethearts, you and I. Wait till the sun shines, Nellie By and by. Few are as intimately acquainted with this long-standing tradition as NYSE veteran Art Cashin, Director of Floor Operations for UBS Financial Services and a regular markets commentator on CNBC. So we'll let him tell the tale: The Legend and Lore of "Nellie" (As hazily recalled by Arthur Cashin) Even before the turn of the last century (that would be 1900 to you if you still haven't adjusted to Y2K), the New York Stock Exchange had a tradition of pre-holiday partying. In fact, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Journal in 1873 recounted a rather raucous Christmas Eve event where the police had to be called. It depicts bands on the floor, chain dances, rough-housing and "powdering" the Chairman (not on the shoes but all over). No serious damage was done to the DOT machine as there were none at the time. At any rate, rather lavish and often noisy New Year's Eve celebrations continued into the 1920's often with three or four bands. We assume much bottled water was consumed. One of the features was quartet and communal singing -- show tunes, college songs and barbershop. Same sex dancing was apparently not big in the 1920's. After the crash of 1929, having bands on the floor did not seem like a good idea for both economic and PR reasons. But the singing continued anyway A Capella; barbershop or community. As the depression deepened and Wall Street wasted away, the song that survived by striking a hopeful cord was "Wait till the Sunshines Nellie" with its promise of the clouds rolling by some day. So from the early 1940's with "seats" trading at $15,000 and the world at war, "Nellie" was the call of hope. Since then, it has become the unofficial anthem of the NYSE members who sing it Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and at various dinners and functions. Read more about the boisterous NYSE Holiday Parties of Yore here.

Stock Market Trading Analysis Premarket Stock Futures HUGE Gap Down NYSE

10:25
http://www.StockMarketFunding.com Stock Market Trading Analysis Premarket Stock Futures HUGE Gap Down NYSE Stock Market Trading Analysis Premarket Stock Futures HUGE Gap Down NYSE Wall Street stocks were set to fall on Wednesday after a sharp snap-back rally in the last session and as investors' well-worn fears about the economy and high levels of public debt looked set to generate more volatile trading. Stocks zigzagged on Tuesday after the U.S. Federal Reserve promised to hold interest rates low for at least two years, before the S&P 500 index rallied 5 percent into the close. But the Fed's statement also underlined the struggling economy and was a reminder markets would likely remain choppy in the near term. S&P futures vs fair value: -14.00. Nasdaq futures vs fair value: -39.00. Despite the dramatic rally that was witnessed on Wall Street yesterday, buyers in Europe haven't appeared very inspired today. That has left the continent's major bourses to trade with mixed results. Germany's DAX has managed to advance to a 1.2% gain. Henkel AG has been a top performer. Deutsche Telekom, Adidas, and BASF have also provided support. Germany's final CPI reading for July showed a 2.4% increase, unchanged from the preliminary reading. France's CAC has failed to sustain any kind of a climb into positive territory. In turn, it is currently down 0.5% after it recently traded with a fractional gain. Veolia Environnement, Technip, and GDF Suez have provided some support, but their efforts have been more than offset by weakness in financial outfits BNP Paribas, Societe Generale, and Credit Agricole. Data out of France indicate that the country's industrial production fell 1.6% during June and that manufacturing production fell 1.9% in June. Those declines followed increases of 1.9% and 1.4%, respectively, in the prior month. Britain's FTSE is up 0.6% at the moment. Financials are divided as Standard Life and Lloyds Group (LYG) offer leadership, but Standard Chartered and HSBC (HBC) trade with losses. According to recent statements from the Bank of England, CPI is expected to peak at approximately 5% in the fourth quarter. Fourth quarter GDP is now expected to increase by approximately 2.0%, which is down from the 2.5% increase that had been estimated previously. Crude oil pulling back; now higher by $2.15 to $81.45.

Trading Education U.S. Stock Futures Extend Losses After Data (NYSE)

04:14
http://tradereducation.wordpress.com Trading Education U.S. Stock Futures Extend Losses After Data (NYSE) U.S. stock-index futures extended losses after government data showed that jobless claims increased last week and consumer inflation accelerated more than forecast. Futures on the Standard & Poor's 500 Index lost 2.4 percent to 1,161.20 at 8:34 a.m. in New York. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures decreased 2.1 percent to 11,147. Futures extended losses after jobless claims climbed by 9,000 to 408,000 in the week ended Aug. 13, the highest in a month, Labor Department figures showed. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg News projected a rise in claims to 400,000, according to the median forecast. The number of people on unemployment benefit rolls rose, while those receiving extended payments fell. The consumer-price index increased 0.5 percent from June, more than twice the 0.2 percent median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg News, figures from the Labor Department showed today in Washington. The so-called core gauge, which excludes volatile food and fuel costs, rose 0.2 percent. The S&P 500 has fallen 12 percent from a three-year high on April 29 amid concern about Europe's debt crisis and an economic slowdown. U.S. stocks may slip to new lows in the next few weeks, setting the stage for a rally of more than 20 percent in the S&P 500, Tom DeMark, the creator of indicators meant to identify turning points in markets, said in an Aug. 16 interview. The S&P 500, which closed at 1,193.89 yesterday, will probably drop below the 11-month low of 1,119.46 set on Aug. 8 before surging above 1,363.61, its peak on April 29, according to DeMark. Most U.S. stocks declined yesterday, wiping out an earlier advance, as Dell Inc. forecast weaker sales and two Federal Reserve officials expressed concern about the amount of stimulus being applied to the economy. The S&P 500 rose as much as 28 percent after Fed Chairman Ben S. Bernanke foreshadowed on Aug. 27 of last year a second round of so-called quantitative easing. The central bank finished the program of asset purchases at the end of June. Bernanke may announce policy intentions at a conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Aug. 26. The action comes in response to news that analysts at S&P have affirmed the ratings on the U.S., but issued a negative outlook. The news has caused the greenback to give up some of its gain against the euro, which is now down 0.6% at $1.43. Episode 81: How to use the Arms Index to predict where the stock market is going

04:20
More Trading Tips for Stock Traders at: http://www.TradingTips.com In 1967, a technical analyst named Richard W. Arms invented the Arms Index. Later, this same statistic became known as TRIN -- or Short-Term TRading INdex. No matter what you want to call it, Arms/TRIN is a great indicator to have in your arsenal. Basically, TRIN can be applied to the NYSE or Nasdaq, and is used to gauge broad-market sentiment for short-term trading. Adding a 10-day SMA can smooth out some of TRIN's inherent volatility and make it more useful for slightly longer-term scenarios. But I'm getting a bit ahead of myself... In this episode, you'll learn: - About the Advance-Decline Ratio and the Advance-Decline Volume Ratio, which are the two statistics used to calculate the Arms Index/TRIN. - How to interpret the Arms Index/TRIN -- both the standard, ultra-short term; and the smoothed-out, slightly longer-term version. - How to use Arms Index/TRIN at StockCharts.com -- including a list of ticker symbols for each exchange's TRIN. We also include a pair of example charts that help more clearly demonstrate how to use Arms Index/TRIN -- and instructions on more advanced interpretations of the indicator. Arms Index/TRIN can help you determine if the broad market is oversold or overbought, as well as if the market is showing general strength or weakness. Yes, there are several other indicators out there that do the same thing, but that doesn't mean TRIN isn't valuable. With this episode, you can see for yourself! Happy Trading! P.S. In our next episode, we'll be looking at the Commodity Channel Index, or CCI. See you next week!
