This is a very complicated world. It’s a very noisy world. And we’re not going to get a chance to get people to remember much about us. No company is! And so, we have to be really clear on what we want them to know about us. Now Apple, fortunately, is one of half-a-dozen best brands in the whole world. Right up there with Nike, Disney, Coke, Sony — it is one of the greats of the greats. Not just in this country, but all around the globe. But even a great brand needs investment and caring if it’s going to retain its relevance and vitality. And the Apple brand has clearly suffered from neglect in this area in the last few years. And we need to bring it back! The way to do that is NOT to talk about speeds and fees. It’s NOT to talk about bits and mega-hertz. It’s NOT to talk about why we are better than Windows. The dairy industry tried for 20 years to convince you that milk was good for you. It’s a lie, but they tried anyway. And the sales were falling. And then they tried “Got milk” and the sales went up. “Got milk” wasn’t even talking about the product. In fact, it focuses on the absence of the product. But the best example of all, and one of the greatest jobs of marketing that the universe has ever seen, is Nike. Remember, Nike sells a commodity. They sell shoes!!! And yet, when you think of Nike you feel something different than a shoe company. In their ads, as you know, they don’t ever talk about the product. They don’t ever tell you about their air soles and why they are better than Reebok’s air soles. What does Nike do in their advertising? They honor great athletes. And they honor great athletics. That’s who they are, that’s what they are about! Apple spends a fortune on advertising — you’d never know it….you’d never know it! So…when I got here, Apple just fired their agency and there was a competition with 23 agencies that…you know…four years from now we would pick one. And we blew that up and we hired Chiat\Day, the ad agency that I was fortunate enough to work with years ago and created some award winning work including the commercial voted the best ad ever made, 1984 (by Advertising Professionals). And…we started working about eight weeks ago, and the question we asked was, “Our customers want to know who is Apple and what is it that we stand for…where do we fit in this world?” And what we’re about isn’t making boxes for people to get their jobs done — although we do that well. We do that better than almost anybody, in some cases. But Apple is about something more than that! Apple at the core…its core value — is that, we believe that people with passion can change the world for the better. That’s what we believe! And we have had the opportunity to work with people like that. We’ve had the opportunity to work with people like you; with software developers, with customers, who have done it. In some big, and some small ways. And we believe that, in this world, people can change it for the better. And that those people who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world are the ones that actually do! And so, what we’re going to do in our first brand marketing campaign in several years, is to get back to that core value! A lot of things have changed. The market is in a total different place than where it was a decade ago. And Apple is totally different — and Apple’s place in it is totally different. And believe me, the products, and the distribution strategy, and the manufacturing are totally different…and we understand that. But values and core values — those things shouldn’t change. The things that Apple believed in at its core, are the same things Apple really stands for today. It's both a blueprint and a roadmap that you can also use to create the kind of music career you desire. It's also deceptively simple although the implementation will require that you learn some step-by-step techniques and tactics. 1. Build Your Fan Lists What is the one thing that all successful artists have in common - LISTS. Lists are the lifeblood of your business as a musician and without them it's almost impossible to make a living from your craft. 2. Develop Relationships With Fans The relationship with your lists will sustain you emotionally, creatively and financially over many, many years if you do it right. However if you disrespect your lists, speak down to them, or treat them as just a source of income then you are likely to have a very short career in music indeed. 3. Learn What Fans Want There exists two main schools (or Tribes) in the marketing of music, the Cool Kids and The Musicpreneur. These two tribes have very different thoughts when it comes to innovation in music and the idea of listening to your fans. 4. Create Work That Excites Fans A musician today has two jobs; creating and communicating. Music Business Institute is primarily about teaching the latter rather than the former because we have to assume you know how to create exciting work. Creating is about honing your craft as a musician. Communicating is about learning how to market and sell what you have created. It's why we call it the Music Business. Music + Business. 5. Identify Fan Type OK, by this point you know that building lists, developing relationships with them, learning what they want and creating work that excites them is important. The 'fan ladder' looks to move someone from just being mildly interested in your music to where they will buy everything you ever produce (concert tickets, recordings, merchandise). You want to move them from being a 'suspect' to a 'super fan' or "true fans". 6. Empower Super Fans Successful artists always have their own small army of super fans. Beliebers (Justin Bieber), Swifties (Taylor Swift), Little Monsters (Lady Gaga), Lovatics (Demi Lovato) and Smilers (Miley Cyrus) are all examples of Super Fans. 7. Promote Work Using Events The final step is about promoting your work using events. Firstly events they create excitement around your music. There are different types of events which can be used to promote your work. There are product launch events, tour announcement events, promotional events and many more. What tools should you be using on your website to market your business? It tracks your visitor count if you have a lot of traffic. They'll sample the data unless you pay like a hundred or a hundred and fifty grand or whatever their price is per year. Google Analytics will show you how people are engaging throughout your site and what traffic sources are causing most conversions. Don't optimize for traffic. Optimize for traffic that causes conversions. 3:00 The second digital marketing tool I have for you is Ubersuggest. You're going to want to get rankings. You're going to want more search traffic. It's the most consistent traffic that you'll get. Yes. Social media traffic is easier and quicker to get. But Google's algorithm updates aren't as crazy as Facebook's. It won't be where one day you're getting 300,000 visitors from Facebook organic reach and the next day you're getting 10,000 visitors. Google's organic traffic is very, very consistent. So use Ubersuggest. 3:40 The third digital marketing tool I have for you is Google Search Console. We love doing this internally, where we take Google search console, we log in; we look at all the posts, how many impressions they get, how many clicks they get and the click-through rate. We look for the posts that get less than a five percent click-through rate. We look at all the keywords that were getting impressions from that post, and then we integrate those keywords into that blog post or that landing page, and we rewrite that content. 7:30 The fourth digital marketing tool is Crazyegg. It allows me to take that data and, within Crazyegg, you don't have to be a developer, you don't have to be a designer. You can adjust your page and run A/B tests to maximize your sales. Because it's not just about getting traffic, it's about converting those visitors into conversions. Another tool that I love using is called Subscribers. It's through push notifications. What it does is it puts a little browser notification when people come to your site and gets them to subscribe without being obtrusive, it does it all within the browser. 9:00 The last digital marketing tool that I'm going to give you guys that you guys should check out is HubSpot. HubSpot's a great tool to look at your overall marketing, your lead count. It integrates marketing with sales, and that's why I want to end with HubSpot. I love it. I use it, and sure some people may say "Hey, there are other tools that do this or that." HubSpot has a lot of free plans, and they have some startup plans, which is very entrepreneur friendly, and best of all is they keep adding more and more stuff for free, so why not? They're a huge billion dollar company that are trying to crush their competitors, so they're just releasing a lot of stuff for free. Hey, that's for your benefit. 10:00 All this data and these digital marketing tools, with no action, is useless. You're better off saving the money and not even paying or using any of them. Step 1 - Decide what information you want to text. This is key. Think of your text campaigns as VIP type content for your best and most loyal followers and customers. What do they really want? Also make sure your team asks your clients to do this! The more that opt-in and the bigger your list, the better results you’ll get! Having a well thought out marketing plan is essential for success. Your business relies on it! So let’s break down 10 questions you need to ask yourself in order to get the most out of your marketing plan. Question #1 - What want or need does your product or service fill? Understand the pain point of your customers is key to building a good marketing plan. The more you know, the better your message. Question #2 - What is your target market? Who, What, When, Where, Why? Age, gender, interests, lifestyle, etc. Knowing these things are vital to a strong marketing plan. Where do they spend their time online? How do they currently find or become aware of companies that fill the want or need are trying to fill? Question #3 - Who are your competitors? Try them! What makes you different? Why choose you? If you don’t have direct competitors, what are other solutions out there that try to fill the wants/needs of your customers? What makes you the best option? Question #4 - What are the goals of your marketing plan? How many sales or leads do you want (or need) to get from it? What is your target Cost Per Acquisition (CPA)? What is your starting budget and what percent of sales do you plan to invest back into marketing as you grow? When do you expect to achieve those metrics? Reverse engineer your goals and build realistic projections that ramp into achieving them because remember - marketing does not work overnight. Question #5 - What is your strategy for search and social? What keywords do you want to rank for and run ads for on Google? What keywords do you want to rank high for on maps? What social channels do you want to build a presence on, what kind of content do you want to post and what kind of ads do you want to run. Spend some time here and it will save you time in the future! Question #6 - What is your strategy to build a strong online reputation across multiple review sites? (Pro tip - set up a free review profile at www.TopRatedLocal.com ) Question #7 - What is your sales process once you generate a lead or sale? What collateral, emails, videos do you need to create to assist your sales team? Once a potential customer is in your sales funnel don't let them go without a fight. Question #8 - How do you build automated marketing to nurture your leads and customers? Retargeting ads, Email automation and more. Question #9 - What content does your website need to have? What landing pages do you need? What marketing funnels do you need to build? Your website is a living breathing organism so don't be surprised if this list of content grows over time. Question #10 - Who is in charge of managing your marketing and held accountable to the plan, optimizing the campaigns, meeting goals/objectives, etc? How often will you review the results and make adjustments? If no one is accountable, nothing will get done. Once that’s all thought through, write out your plan! Tactic #2 - Create FOMO The whole purpose of your social media marketing campaign is to create Fear Of Missing Out. Hire influencers to attend your event and spread the word about your event. Remember that your performers or entertainers or speakers are the prime influencers, so give them collaterals they can share on social networks. Tactic #3 - Gamify Promotions Get people talking about your event online. You can use tools such as event apps or special discount codes to create a community before the event. Gamification such as competitions and scavenger hunts can be effective. Offer prizes: A special sit down with a celebrity A special access to a closed area of your event 20% off the ticket or a free ticket Tactic #4 - Be Present All Year Round If you wake up two months before the event, it’s not going to work, you will not get the exposure. Social networks now have algorithms that assign visibility based on your activity and performance of updates. If you want to give it the best shot, you need to be engaged and present all year long. Tactic #5 - Quality Not Quantity Back in the day, there was one golden rule about the use of social media to promote events: the more updates and content the merrier. Nowadays, attention has shifted from quantity to quality. The only exception is for stories. Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat give you more prominence if you create more stories. The same is not true for regular updates though. Curating fewer updates but providing the highest quality content. It’s really about curating that one daily or weekly update that is going to give you the maximum exposure. Algorithms will favor you if you focus on fewer updates but of higher quality. Tactic #6 - Combine Social Ads Combine Social ads for maximum effectiveness There is no chance anyone will see your updates on social networks such as Facebook if you don’t combine your strategy with a strong ad budget. The same goes for Youtube. You should allocate some budget to seed your content, especially at the beginning. Organic opportunities will kick in later but always allocate a budget that can range anywhere between $10 and $1,000 dollars per update if you really want to increase the visibility of your updates.
