The Problem with Applied Behavior Analysis | Chloe Everett | TEDxUNCAsheville

16:41
Imagine not being allowed to do harmless things, such as tapping your foot or express happiness. This is the reality that many people on the autism spectrum face, and it has a name: applied behavioral analysis. Autistic activists and their allies have long spoken out against this therapy, and science is finally beginning to back their claims. Chloe Everett is a student at UNC-Asheville, where she studies psychology and neuroscience. Chloe is a staunch advocate for disability rights and neurodiversity. She has experience working with people on the autism spectrum, and is neurodivergent herself. Chloe is dedicated to using her experiences growing up in the behavioral therapy system to better assist others, and improve existing therapies for autism. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx

Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) | Dr. Vincent Carbone

17:58
Dr. Vincent J. Carbone, Ed.D., BCBA-D provides an Introduction to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA is the science in which tactics derived from the principles of behavior are applied to improve socially significant behavior and experimentation is used to identify the variables responsible for the improvement in behavior. Its application to children diagnosed with autism and other developmental disabilities has been well researched and shown to lead to meaningful increases in the skill level of children. Dr. Carbone emphasizes that Skinner's Analysis of Verbal Behavior is not different to ABA, it is an ABA approach to language. Many ABA practitioners do not make use of two lines of research: motivation (Jack Michael) and Analysis of Verbal Behavior (Skinner) to the language training of persons with autism. Dr. Carbone is the founder of the Carbone Clinic in New York and in Dubai ( www.thecarboneclinic.ae ). Dr. Carbone will be offering a Workshop on "Teaching Language to Children with Autism and Reducing Problem Behavior" in Dubai on September 5th & 6th 2014: http://thecarboneclinic.ae/WorkshopSchedule.htm. Subtitles in English are available on the video clicking on the Captions icon on the bottom right of the YouTube screen.

The Autism Intervention Training Video Series was designed for individuals in the beginning stages of learning how to conduct Applied Behavioural Analysis with children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. It is a series of videos demonstrating 5 of the key techniques needed for successful intervention: The Discrete Trial; Reinforcement; Prompting; Generalization; Incidental Teaching The videos are intended to be a learning tool, used in conjunction with textbook, classroom and/or practice-based learning. Each video is short enough to be shown during class time with time left over for the instructor to cover the topics in more detail during lecture. These videos will be useful to students, paraprofessionals, professionals and parents.

How To Stop A Tantrum Due To A Demand: Applied Behavior Analysis

Applied Behavior Analysis: Just the Facts By Dawn Hendricks

01:18:14
Applied behavior analysis (ABA) has been demonstrated time and again to be an effective strategy for teaching skills and reducing problem behavior in individuals with autism spectrum disorders as well as other developmental disabilities. Despite its proven track record, there are still many misconceptions about what it is and how it is to be used. ABA is a set of principles that can be applied in any classroom, home, or community where learning takes place. As a parent or professional supporting a person with ASD, having an understanding of these principles and how to apply them is advantageous and can lead to skill acquisition in any area including communication, social skills, academics, and self-help. In this presentation, Dr. Hendricks will define ABA, introduce key terminology and will describe the key principles that are to be used by parents and educators. Real life examples of how these principles can be applied with individuals with ASD will be provided. https://rrtc.vcu.edu/

What is ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)?

00:40
ABA treatment programs focus on applying behavior methods to help improve the behaviors, as well as the overall quality of life, of children with autism and other special needs. Behavior methods include teaching and rewarding children's desired behaviors, such as following instructions, sharing, and using sounds/words to communicate, while at the same time not rewarding children's problem behaviors, such as noncompliance, trantrumming, and aggression.

ABA Therapy with Sarah

04:36
This is a good example of Applied Behavioral Analysis in action using an approach called Verbal Behavior. The therapist is a Board Certified Behavioral Analyst. E is three years old. He was diagnosed with Autism when he was 18 months old. [update] E is now 9 years old. He still gets speech therapy although his verbal ability is about 75% of typical. He is in mainstream public education with some minor accommodations and pull out time for speech and social skills. He is two years ahead in math and above grade level in all other academic areas. He loves soccer, science, and math. He does still flap his arms when excited but above all else, he is a very happy, loving boy. [update] E is 8 years old, in mainstream education with some assists. Academically grade level or above in all subjects. Very happy boy, outgoing and friendly. Has some ADHD issues and challenges in a learning environment. Loves soccer, science, numbers and has been doing hip-hop dancing for two years now. Plays the piano and has perfect pitch. [update] Now a year later, his verbal ability is vastly improved. He can ask for anything he needs, has much longer sentences and says things like "Oh look at all the grass! It's beautiful!" He can count to 30, knows his ABCs and can even spell some words. He plays with his brother and parents, takes turns, laughs, hugs and says hello and thank you. There's still a lot of work ahead for him to be able to function in a classroom setting with typical kids but because of ABA he is definitely on track. [update] E is now almost 5 years old. His communication and social skills have progressed greatly. Here is a video of him describing the animals he sees in clouds. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rypNYn7-KfY

How Sensory Extinction Changed My Son's Life│Autism & Applied Behavior Analysis

03:57
It's very possible it served as a punisher instead of sensory extinction or some combination of both. Learners with autism often engage in self-stimulatory behaviors which are automatically reinforced. Sensory extinction as an applied behavior analysis (ABA) treatment resulted in a massive change in my son's quality of life after whe began this behavior intervention. Incidental Teaching (ABA/Applied Behavior Analysis)

01:13
"Incidental teaching provides structured learning opportunities in the natural environment by using the child's interests and natural motivation. Incidental teaching was developed to increase language and social responses by maximizing the power of reinforcement and encouraging generalization (Hart & Risley, 1968, 1974)". The idea behind incidental teaching is an elaboration of language (e.g. instead of "car", you may ask, "which car" to increase the likelihood that the chid will say "blue car" or "big car".) "Those primarily focused on developing and using strategies embedded in natural settings that promote generalization refer to their interventions as naturalistic teaching approaches (NTAs)" (Leblanc et al., 2006). Here is a video of my friend's daughter re: Incidental teaching. The language elaboration "closing" "all done" "open" and the names of colors were planned on part of the instructor (me). The training occurred in the natural environment, though the instruction/learning opportunities were contrived. When her parents ask her to label colors or reinforce her for naming the correct color of an item/object then we could assess for generalization and maintenance. "Interventions that promote generalization refer to their interventions as naturalistic teaching approaches (Leblanc et al., 2006)...think those that promote generalization: multiple exemplar training, loose training, programming common stimuli, etc.

ABA Autism Training - Chapter 5 Incidental Teaching

05:01
This video covers the four basic steps of incidental teaching: 1) create an engaging setting; 2) wait for the child to initiate; 3) prompt the child for a fuller request; and 4) provide the desired outcome.
