So, let’s review my seven key principles for how to do it successfully and then a five step plan of attack to execute those principles. 1. It’s an all-the-time thing. 2. Give value first. Take second. 3. Give more than you take. 4. Do it live. 5. Do what you say you’re going to do—build trust. 6. Move it forward and expand their network. 7. Build a systematic plan that allows you to execute. My 5-Step Plan to Build a Healthy Professional Network A. Set your networking goals. There are many, but let’s talk about four: • Educations and advancement of your knowledge • Camaraderie • Job hunting • Grow customers, partnerships, etc. B. Build your relationship map by doing your research. C. Identify 60 to 100 people you can connect with who can help you meet your goals. D. Prepare standard messages you can modify. E. “E” is for execute. It is explained in plain, non-technical language so that any lay-person could grasp the ideas and techniques. Near the end, testing is also explained. But if you're making this networking mistake, you're going to destroy your chances of landing a great opportunity. In this tutorial, career expert J.T. O'Donnell shares this CRINGEWORTHY true story of what NOT to do at networking events... --- Today, I wanted to talk about the worst face-to-face networking mistake you can make. I actually witnessed this at a large, professional networking event I attended. There was this man working his way around the room, forcing his way into conversations and interrupting people. He looked uncomfortable doing it, but he continued anyway. I could see that his hands were shaking as he was trying to make small talk. But without even hearing what he was saying, I could tell those interactions were awkward and not going well. He eventually makes his way over to the group I’m networking with and forces his way in. He tells us his name, hands out his business card to every single person, tells us his branding statement, then ends by letting us know he’s looking for work and if we knew of any positions that would suit him, he’d be grateful for the information. This is a classic example of a job seeker who takes what he or she has read online, scripts it out, and goes through the process like a robot. You never want to do this with face-to-face networking. It’s not an exact science. There’s a bit of an art to it, but it’s not complex. It’s about being human, humble, and personable. Most importantly, it’s about listening to others. Let them do the talking. Connect with them. Absorb what they’re saying. This is how you start to build trust with someone. If they trust you, they will be more willing to help you. None of this will ever happen if you’re following a regimented process when it comes to networking. There should be a flow and natural rhythm to it. It’s bad to avoid networking, even if you’re not a confident networker. However, it’s just as bad to approach networking in such a forced way. So, don’t fall into this trap of feeling like you need to follow a checklist next time you’re networking. Everyone would love to go full-time in Network Marketing, everyone would love to enjoy the financial and personal freedom that network marketing provides, but how does one do that? And what is the fastest way to success? In this week’s 20-minute show, Eric Worre, takes us behind closed doors and gives the key to success in Network Marketing. The fastest way to success is to improve the people that you’re spending time with. By that, Eric explains, hang around and associate with people who are a positive influence and can help you go where you want to go in life. To quote Jim Rohn, “You become the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” You will generally think how they think, go where they go, do what they do, your interests are gonna be similar, and your ambitions are gonna be similar. But if you are hanging around lazy, unmotivated, negative people, they will drag you down with them. So find people who are a positive influence on you and will help you grow your business. As Eric further explains, if you don’t know how to recruit very well, or you’re insecure in recruiting, the fastest way to become a good recruiter, is to find people who are great recruiters, and listen to those people. Same applies in other areas, such as, if you’re not good at doing presentations, find a way to develop relationships and friendships with people who are doing great presentations. This works in all categories of building your network marketing business. In the video Eric tells us of being a very young man and he wanted to learn and grow, so he absorbed every motivational, business building audiocassette he could get his hands on. He listened to all the greats. He even drove hours around the country, sleeping in his car, just so he could shadow people that he admired in the Network Marketing business, just to listen when they spoke. He did everything he could, not only did he listen, shadow and absorb every word, but by working on his inner mental game, he found a way to bring value to a conversation with people much more successful than him, thereby earning his way into their “group”. Eric explains that this type of transformation begins in your mind, but you also have to limit your association to negative people, or negative situations. But mostly you need to focus on expanding your association with positive influences and surround yourself with greatness, and the little negative things will slowly fade away... Some of Eric’s early mentors he never met, but they mentored him through video, audio, and books, and you can build associations just like that also. However, how many times have you been introduced to someone only to forget that individual’s name moments later? Trust me, we have all been there. Clients, Referral Sources, and potential Power Partners all want to feel important. By referring to a person by name, you are showing the person that he or she matters, which essentially gives you an advantage to blow away the competition. Remembering a customer’s name can improve your sales in any industry. However, this can be a challenge for most people. Time and time again, people are amazed by how easily I can grasp a person’s name and ask me how I do it. On this week’s episode of A Drink with “The Hurricane,” I have asked Nick Bonitatibus, from Hurricane Marketing Enterprises, to provide you with techniques to help you master the art of memorizing a person’s name. Remembering names in a large setting can be intimidating for some, especially if you are prone to being forgetful. The good news is, with practice, you can improve your memory by following these steps: Meet and Repeat When you first meet someone, don’t just carry on with the conversation. I want you to immediately state the person’s name. For example, “It’s a pleasure to meet you, Joe.” Using his/her name throughout the conversation will help you remember him/her in the long run. Spell it out When concluding a conversation, ask for their business card, and later that night add them to your Facebook account. By seeing the person’s name on the business card and his/her picture on Facebook, it creates a visual that will help you develop an association between a name and a face. Put the contact in your phone with a picture How many times have you put someone’s number in your phone, only to forget who that person is? If you can’t follow up, then what good is having a number? This is where taking a picture of the person comes in handy. Now you will have a visual cue to help jog your memory. I recommend putting a note in your phone to help you remember things such as their job title, where you met them, and any personal facts that would be important to follow up with during your next interaction. It is a great concept to ask, “What can I do for you?” or “ How can I help you?” This seems like a great concept, but actually it causes an awkward challenge if you are a busy entrepreneur, executive or sales rep and you’ve got half a dozen people at a network meeting walking up to you saying, “Hey, what can I do to help you with your business?” That’s a really sweet question. It’s very genuine, it’s very nice per se but the truth is, it’s not very helpful because they didn’t take the time to get to know what you’re up to, they didn’t look for ways where they can really serve you, they didn’t ask questions that help them identify gaps that they can actually step in and help fill. In short… they didn’t do the research. I remember a long time ago, I spent a few hours hanging out with a guy named James Altucher. He’s got a very interesting blog that he writes and a very interesting podcast. I asked him, “How did you go from struggling to making 10 million dollars on one deal? Losing it all to making $14 million on the next deal? How did you do that?” In his response he taught me a very simple technique of active networking (that’s the term I gave, that’s not what he said) He said he would go out and look for an opportunity, a person or an organization that he wanted to connect with and he would spend time researching online what’s going on in their world – articles that they would write, blogs they posted, their Instagram, their Twitter. He would just dig into their world and learn about them and educate himself of what they’re up to, what they’re focused on, what they’re talking about, projects they are working on. All the details that they are working on, and he would naturally look for gaps that existed in their plan, in their execution, in their message. He would look for things that he could find that as a consumer, or as someone who really enjoyed receiving content from them, he wished there was more of and he would take notes and say, “I wish you would cover this topic, I wish you would do it like this, I wish you came into this side, I wish you have this additions to it..”

On today's episode of A Drink With The Hurricane, we are gonna talk about what to do when you swap cards at a networking event. All right so in the example here, this is something that people commonly do at a networking event and it makes sense. "Let me get your card, and I'm gonna give you my card, and then we'll be in touch, and we can talk business at a later time." Now, in theory, this sounds good, because this is what everybody does at networking events. They swap cards and then they say they'll be in touch, but when you go to call that person when you go to the email that person, nine times out of 10 they are busy. Which we're all super, super busy, they're not gonna answer the phone. They aren't gonna get the message in a timely fashion. They aren't gonna respond to the email or if they do, it'll be brief, but by the time you see this person again, it'll probably be the next networking meeting. It's not fair, it's not right, but that's just how it is. I mean I even think about myself. You know here's my cell phone. I have my cell phone right here in my hand. My phone rings all the time, all the time, my phone goes off, even now I have a text message coming in. Now, this came in from my wife, so that's fine, but I have text messages and phone calls all the time. Now if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer it. If I don't recognize the number and there's a voice message, I don't check the voice message 'cause I don't have time to check them. I'm running a multi-million dollar international marketing company and I'm flying all across the globe. I don't have time to follow up and listen to people. So if I don't recognize your number I'm probably not gonna answer it unless it was an appointment on my calendar for a random number to call me. So I still don't recognize the number, but somebody's calling me at the time that I have an actual appointment on my calendar. That is the whole point of this week's episode. Unless you have an appointment, it is not a priority. In the 21st century, we have more technology. We are busier than we've ever been before. It's almost one of the big downfalls of technology. We like to make ourselves so busy that we always have something to do and then we don't even have time for ourselves. So you'’re going to start networking, or perhaps you'’re new to it? It’'s probably sensible to develop a mixture of face-to-face and online networking, but let’'s focus on the face-to-face networking. It might be best to understand why you have, or want, to network? Perhaps it's for your career or for business. It might be to find customers, suppliers, introduces, get advice or discover innovative ideas, or it could be to just help alleviate the loneliness of running an organisation by yourself. - and once the’ reasons are known decide where you are actually going to network. Will it be locally, regionally, nationally or internationally? Not only will you need to budget your monetary costs, but your time as well. So which events might you choose? There are many business clubs and organisations to consider. Some are free, some are fee paying. In addition to established clubs, consider seminars, openings, fares, exhibitions as well as charity and sporting events. These can all be very useful for expanding your network. Try as many as you can, and ask other net-workers which ones they favor. So now you’'ve chosen an event - what next? Well, actually turning up is useful! If you'’re nervous about walking into a room full of strangers and facing that awkward "Who shall I talk to?"’ moment, arrive 15 to 30 minutes early. The organisers, even if they'’re not quite ready, will be delighted that at least one person has turned up and, if you'’re friendly and helpful, you'’ll often find them introducing you to the other attendees as they arrive. This really helps break the ice. it's far easier than trying to cut in to a pair, or group, of people already deep in conversation. Try to have a flowing, natural sounding, story about what you do and what you're looking for. Identify the ‘serial networkers’; these are people who network frequently and have a large number of connections. They are often great allies and introduces. When you are given a business card try to treat it with respect. Don’'t just stuff it in your bag or pocket. If someone has caught your attention and you want to follow up; I’'ve found putting a little fold on at least one corner of the card makes it easier for it to be distinguished from the others when you are sorting them later. I often explain why I’'ve done that to those whose card I'’ve corner-folded. - and remember; try not to sell. ‘People ‘buy’ people’,– so be friendly, yet professional. Oh, and make sure you follow up - before life interrupts your best intentions.
