The Children Working On Indian Coal Mines
Rat Hole Minors (2014): In the coal mines of India, tens of thousands of children are forced to work in "rat holes", tiny pits too small for adults to reach. According to Hasina Karbith, a charity worker for Indian NGO Impulse, there are over 70,000 underage children working just in the mines of Meghalaya. The charity is trying to fight what they say is a rampant illegal industry of trafficking from Nepal and child labour in the mines. "We wrote more than 60 letters to the government with the findings and still we didn't get any response. I still remember the day when the government wrote back to us and said, 'you have to present the names of the 70,000 children. If you cannot do it in the next 15 days then your organisation is going to be shut down'." Spain Euthanized Its Coal Mines. This Is How Miners Are Taking It (HBO)
The coal industry is dying a slow death in many parts of the world. But in Spain, the end was swift — and government-mandated. The country's version of a "Green New Deal" for coal included a compensation package for miners, which has received international praise from unions and environmental groups as other countries are looking to quit the fossil fuel. Through a deal struck between the Spanish government and coal mining companies and unions, almost all the country’s mines closed by the end of 2018, and around 1,500 miners were laid off. The phase-out agreement set aside 250 million euros for funding retirement packages, retraining and environmental restoration. The deal spurred protests around Spain in December. But outside the country, Spain’s handling of the coal phase-out has been praised. It’s an example of what progressive politicians are calling a “fair transition” — funds and policies to help workers who are laid off when the government cracks down on fossil fuels. In the U.S., supporters of a “Green New Deal” have already called for a similar fair transition package aimed at American coal workers. Antonio Gomez Souto, a 43-year-old miner who’s worked at the La Escondida coal mine since he was 17, said that for him at least, the deal was adequate. “I'm part of a pre-retirement plan for this year,” he said after his last Monday shift at the mine. “Pre-retirement packages are enough to get by and stop worrying about it.” Subscribe to VICE News here: http://bit.ly/Subscribe-to-VICE-News Check out VICE News for more: http://vicenews.com Follow VICE News here: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vicenews Twitter: https://twitter.com/vicenews Tumblr: http://vicenews.tumblr.com/ Instagram: http://instagram.com/vicenews More videos from the VICE network: https://www.fb.com/vicevideo

German villages sacrificed in the name of coal
Subscribe to France 24 now: http://f24.my/youtubeEN FRANCE 24 live news stream: all the latest news 24/7 http://f24.my/YTliveEN In Germany, one of Europe’s largest coal mines is gaining ground, destroying dozens of villages in its path. Some 35,000 people have already been relocated and 24 new villages have been created to make way for the Garzweiler mine, spanning more than 30 square kilometers. Officially, Germany is in the middle of an energy transition, replacing nuclear energy with renewables. But that doesn’t mean the country has kicked its addiction to coal, which remains its primary source of energy. Extracting more coal means having to relocate the people whose villages are being swallowed by the growing mines. The Down to Earth team travelled to Rhineland to meet those who have been displaced by coal mining, and forced to abandon their homes, shops, churches and even cemetaries. http://www.france24.com/en/taxonomy/emission/20374 Visit our website: http://www.france24.com Subscribe to our YouTube channel: http://f24.my/youtubeEN Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FRANCE24.English Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/France24_en

"It will take centuries, thousands of years before everything can return to normal", says biologist Eddy Nurtjahya. The Islands of Bangka and Belitung are experiencing a tin rush and with a laissez-faire government and rampant corruption, many are now seeking international pressure to help curb this illegal trade. The Açu Superport, Brazil
FCC is building the expansion of the Açu Superport, which lies about 315 kilometres north of Rio de Janeiro. The project has a price tag of over 407 million euros and a completion period of 32 months. The contract calls for FCC to build Terminal TX-1 in Açu, which is located in São João da Barra, in north-eastern Brazil, an area that produces 85% of the country's gas and oil. The terminal is an extension of a recently built quay that requires a new breakwater before it can be put into operation. FCC is the leader of the consortium that will be taking on the project, a complex job of civil engineering, as the sheer magnitude of the job shows. A 2,438-metre-long caisson-type quay will be built, which will involve the manufacturing and sinking of 49 reinforced-concrete caissons, plus a 600-metre rubble mound breakwater. The huge caissons are an average of 45 metres long, 24 metres across and 18 to 29 metres deep. The new breakwater is going to be tricky to build. Its first nine caissons will be cast in Algeciras, Cádiz, because Açu does not yet have the necessary facilities. These caissons will be moved from Algeciras to Açu in semi-submersible vessels. During their 15-day crossing they will cover 4,300 nautical miles (the equivalent of 7,960 kilometres). The two FCC Construcción-owned floating docks making the caissons, the Mar del Aneto and the Mar del Enol, will make the transoceanic voyage too. Once they have reached Açu, the nine caissons will mark the area where the floating docks will be moored. The construction work on the foundations will be done by a number of vessels, including FCC's split barges Bocami and Acanto. The contract includes other activities as well, such as preliminary dredging of the sea bottom down to an average depth of 31 metres (4,100,000 m3), construction of the superstructure completing the breakwaters, and the installation of nautical equipment and beacons. The materials to build the harbour will be mined from the Itaoca quarry 70 kilometres away, which belongs to the client. The harbour lies within the Açu Superport industrial complex, an area of 90 square kilometres, equivalent to 2.5 times the size of Manhattan Island. It will have two terminals with 17 kilometres of quays and 40 berths, capable of accommodating ships laden with up to 400,000 tons. The new facilities will make it possible for Açu to receive cargos of iron, oil, steel, coal and granite and will provide mooring for well-known ships such as the Capsize, which can carry 220,000 tons. The new Açu Superport will have a lot of potential for the oil and gas industry, because it is so close to the Campos Basin, one of Brazil's biggest crude-producing areas. Forecasts are for 350 million tons per year once the project is finished. The new contract was awarded to a company formed by LLX (of the EBX Group) and Minas Río (of the Anglo American Group). LLX belongs to Eike Batista, the eighth-richest man in the world according to Forbes Magazine. Anglo America is one of the largest mining companies in the world, specializing in platinum, diamonds, copper, nickel, iron ore and coal, with mines all over the world.

This report investigates what is being named the biggest disaster in Brazil's mining history. A horror mudslide swept through the towns and villages in the Gualaxo River Valley, destroying homes, businesses and taking the lives of 19 people. A tailings dam, holding back more than 50 million cubic metres of mining waste collapsed, unleashing a wave of mud several metres high. "The mud dragged me down, I would come up, it would take me down again... I screamed but nobody answered", remembers Priscila Barros, who was pulled four kilometers under the deadly slurry. The mud, containing lead, arsenic and other toxic chemicals, continued down river all the way to the Atlantic coast 600km away. "This mud wave has killed anything that was alive in these water systems", explains Marilene Ramos of the Brazilian Environment Authority. Now Brazilian police are seeking the arrest of 12 of Samarco's executives for negligent homicide and crimes against the environment. "A dam doesn't break by chance. There is repeated, continual negligence in the actions of a company owned by Vale and BHP", says prosecutor Carlos Eduardo Pinto. Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA
http://gia.edu/gem-encyclopedia Mining for Emeralds in Brazil by GIA. Emerald gemstone has many special qualities. From Sao Paolo, Brazil, Sergio Martins discusses the emerald gemstone history, industry and how sourcing this precious stone is performed in Brazilian mines. He explains the different types of Brazilian mining systems that exist at different locations throughout the country. The Belmont mine has a large area and conducts open pit mining on a large scale. They have consistently produced this precious gemstone for 30 years. Sergio also discusses the Nova Era mine, different from the other emerald mines because it belongs to over 140 people. Located in the area of Garimpeiro, emerald mining in this region involves miners making shafts and looking for the vein that leads to a large concentration of emerald, a “pocket”. Mining can take up to few years before any emerald stones are discovered, but once found, they can produce up to 10 million dollars worth of emeralds in one pocket. Coal Mining: The Disasters and the History of Mine Safety and Health Legislation
A public domain video A film about the history of underground coal mining throughout the years. The disasters and the health regulations. -The Monongah Mining Disaster was the worst mining accident in American history; 362 men and young boys were killed in an underground explosion on December 6, 1907 in Monongah, West Virginia. -Following a decade in which the number of coal mining fatalities exceeded 2,000 annually, Congress established the Bureau Of Mines in 1910 as a new agency in the Department of the Interior. The Bureau was to investigate accidents, advise industry, conduct production and safety research, and teach courses in accident prevention, first aid, and mine rescue. However, Congress did not empower the federal inspectors to enter and inspect mines until 1941, and did not authorize a code of federal regulations for mine safety until 1947. The Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Acts of 1969 and 1977 set greater safety standards for the industry. Where annual mining deaths had numbered more than 1,000 a year in the early part of the 20th century, they decreased to an average of about 500 in the late 1950s. Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report. Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market. Brazil under fire over Amazon forest mining decree
Brazil's government is scrambling to respond to public outcry after it dismantled a vast national reserve in the Amazon to open up the area to mining. The National Reserve of Copper and Associates (Renca) banned mining in roughly 46,000 square km of Amazon rainforest, an area larger than Denmark. It was set up in 1984 by the then military government to reserve its mineral resources for future extraction rather to protect the forest. Brazil: Environmentalists Fear Permanent Mining Damage
About a hundred people demonstrated today in Rio outside the Vale mining company. Smearing mud on the property, protesters shouted, “It was not an accident” and “VALE, you killed me.” Environmentalists are concerned that last week’s avalanche of mud and mining wastes from two collapsed dams may have caused permanent damage to the region’s ecosystem. Drinking water for a quarter of a million people has already been cut off and waterways are saturated with a dense orange sediment, which could reduce oxygen levels in the water and diminish the fertility of farmland. Brazil: Local Fishermen Bury Fish Killed in Mining Disaster
Samarco, the Brazilian mining company partially responsible for the mudslide that killed at least nine people and wreaked untold ecological damages in Minas Gerais, has announced that it will pay local fishermen US$27 a day to bury dead fish. At least one local resident interviewed by teleSUR, however, believes that the fishermen are being used to improve Samarco’s image and doubts that they will ever get paid. Immense quantities of mud have already reached the sea, causing widespread environmental and social damage. teleSUR http://multimedia.telesurtv.net/v/brazil-local-fishermen-bury-fish-killed-in-mining-disaster/

Mine Cristal, mining quartz crystals
www.minecristal.ca Stay informed about our new videos: subscribe to our YouTube channel "Mine Cristal". This mine is located in Bonsecours, Quebec, Canada. Photos and video clips shown here date from 1989 - 2012. The open-pit mine produces splendid quartz crystals with exceptional clarity. The largest single crystals measure 60 cm (24 inches) in length. Since mining began in 1989, 32 types, or morphologies of quartz crystals have been catalogued. Geological research into the origins of these crystals has revealed that they formed at this location some 300 million years ago under extreme conditions of heat and pressure. We harvest crystals in the mine only as needed, to supply our store with a sufficient quantity of quartz crystals. Exceptionally (for a mine), we harvest all the crystals by hand and without the use of dynamite. It is a privilege for us to participate in the discovery and extraction of these true gems of nature. The extraction process is done in a manner which respects both the environment and the crystals: we endeavor to keep the crystals whole and in a pristine state. In the museum and the store, our crystals are presented in an untouched, natural state. Amazingly, each crystal is an intricate work of art made by Nature; no two are alike and this makes them even more fascinating! Mine Cristal is considered by experts to be a “geological gem,” one of Canada’s great natural sites, due to it’s unique and abundant mineralogical deposits.

Hundreds missing after Brazil dam collapse
Hundreds missing after Brazil dam collapse Local firefighters said the number of missing in the area could be as many as 300, after a dam collapse caused a huge mud slide in a mining complex in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The dam's cafeteria, where workers were eating lunch, was buried by the sludge. State governor Romeu Zema said there was little chance of finding people alive. So far nine people have been confirmed dead. It is not clear what caused the collapse of the dam, owned by Brazil's largest mining company, Vale. This incident comes just over three years after another dam burst in Mariana, also in Minas Gerais. Nineteen people were killed, in what is considered to be Brazil's worst environmental disaster.
