✅Join me and 5,000 others at LIG so I can show you how you can transform your career. Registrations are now open again; https://goo.gl/chwjpr Watch next: One Simple Talk That May Change Your Career and Life: https://youtu.be/R-PAfs_4un8 In this month's episode, I teach you various layers of strategy and how to use strategy tools. What I’d like to do in about 45 minutes to an hour is to give you a sense of what strategy is, what tools we use to develop strategy, and then teach you how to apply these corporate level tools to our day to day lives through developing strategic thinking abilities. So if you take this mini-course, by the end of it, you’ll very clearly learn what strategy is and its various levels such corporate strategy, business strategy, and functional strategies. You will no longer confuse it with tasks or goals, then you will learn about Strategy Canvas with value curves. It’s a tool that will help you see the bigger picture, help you with the positioning of your offerings and hence develop strategies to become… unique. And while I am teaching you these, I’ll run so many case studies to make it crystal clear for you. Then finally, the second half of the video will be the most useful part to you. Because in reality, you are probably not the strategy manager or the CEO of a large multinational company, you are probably not Coca Cola’s Chairman, so what I did at the 2nd half of the video is to customize strategy development so it can be applicable to your day to day lives. You will learn how to develop a strategic thinking that will apply to your work, apply to your family life, your school, in simple terms; your life. You’ll be a smarter person, because you’ll be more strategic in your thinking, you’ll have more success because you’ll be able to identify more opportunities, you’ll fail less because you’ll be able to identify risks even before they become apparent. And I’ll try my best to do the impossible and cover everything under 1 hour and make it super easy to understand. I’ll try but let’s see if I’ll succeed. So, what is strategy; Strategy is a word that gets used a lot and often in a wrong context. Most people confuse it with goals. Essentially, strategy is a roadmap to how we are going to win. Where you are is your “as-is” state, and where you want to go is your “to-be” state. How you are going to bridge that gap is your strategy. So, if I was to teach strategy to my children I’d say, you wanna reach the finish line first. You may walk straight to the finish line at 5 kms per hour, Or you may extend your route, take more time as you have to travel more distance, but collect the speed boost on the way so you go faster at the end at around 20 km per hour. Collecting that speed boost to win would be your strategy. now let’s get back to the adult world, in business, we have 3 major layers of strategy; We have Corporate Strategy We have Business Strategy And we have Functional strategy So, let’s start with corporate strategy;

The strategy an organization follows is its plan for how to compete successfully, survive, and grow. Many organizations have a relatively formal process for developing a written strategy encompassing a certain period of time, with objectives and goals identified for each business unit. Strategic planning is the process of defining organizational strategy, or direction, and allocating resources (capital and people) toward its achievement. The strategic planning cycle typically covers a three-to-five-year time frame, although some firms conduct long-term planning that can cover 10 years or more. Effective strategy often relies on managers who are willing to closely assess current conditions and develop a game plan that enables the firm to overcome obstacles and sustain success.

HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore human resource planning by outlining a three-step strategic process to meet your organization’s human resource needs. Human resource planning is a process that identifies current and future human resources needs for an organization to achieve its goals. Human resource planning should serve as a link between human resource management and the overall strategic plan of an organization. The goals of human resource planning are to ultimately improve organizational outcomes. Human resource planning is used in and for all functional areas of human resource management. Although you might immediately think of workforce planning, human resource planning covers the brood spectrum of functional areas of human resource management. Human resource planning includes figuring out where you are, where you want to go, and how to get there. Using this process, you will develop the core elements of a human resource plan - strategy, goals, and actions. Strategy is an extension of an organization's mission, a bridge between the organization and it’s environment. Goals are a statement of desired outcomes toward which effort is directed, to realize your human resource plan. Actions are the most important things that can be done to reach stated goals. Planning is critical for each functional area of human resource management. Ask these three simple strategic questions – where are we now, where do we want to be, and how can we get there? - to frame your next human resource planning process. Doing so will ensure you develop the right human resource strategy, goals and action items to realize your plan.

The Urban Strategies & Planning specialization is part of the IHS Master programme in Urban Management and Development. Urban Planning has moved away from comprehensive master plans that intended to control the spatial development of an entire territory, to more flexible strategic plans. At the same time, urban professionals face challenges such as the fast growing urban world population and cities with informal housing, social deprivation, economic decline and changing climatic circumstances. Contemporary strategic planning integrates more social and economic considerations into the physical and spatial dimensions of planning.

Effective strategy often relies on managers who are willing to closely assess current conditions and develop a game plan that enables the firm to overcome obstacles and sustain success. Strategic HR management refers to the appropriate use of HR management practices to gain or keep a competitive advantage. An important way HR professionals can contribute to strategy is by introducing high-performance approaches into the workplace that lead to increased performance. Forecasting uses information from the past and present to predict future conditions. Positive HR planning can be a source of competitive advantage for organizations. This is true because planning helps companies identify their future needs and how to get the right employees to satisfy these needs, thus making the hiring process more efficient. HR metrics are specific measures of HR practices. Unlike financial reporting, there is not yet a standard for the implementation and reporting of HR measures. Managers choose what and how to report to employees, investors, and other interested parties. Benchmarking is the process of comparing an organization’s business results to industry standards or best practices. The balanced scorecard is a framework organizations use to report on a diverse set of performance measures. Results in each of these four areas determine if the organization is progressing toward its strategic objectives. Measuring the benefits of human capital is equally important because it shows how effective HR practices help an organization and its employees. A variety of financial measures can be assessed to show the contribution human capital makes to organizational results. Without such measures, it would be difficult to know what is going on in the organization, identify performance gaps, and provide feedback. Managers should require the same level of rigor in measuring HR practices as they do for other functions in the organization.

Calls for a greater emphasis on strategic planning beg the question of how the public can be better engaged, and how one possible future for a place can be compared to another. Rod Simpson outlines the idea of 'strategic urban design' as the basis for integrating planning, design and community engagement, using 'real-time' modeling of scenarios. The lecture describes how the approach has been integrated into the Urban Design and Urban Planning programs at the University of Sydney for a number of Sydney case studies. Associate Professor Roderick Simpson is Director of the Urban Design Program at the University of Sydney and principal of simpson+wilson whose work ranges across architecture, urban design and strategic planning. In 2007 and 2008 he led the urban design and spatial planning for the Sustainable Sydney 2030 Strategy which showed how the City of Sydney could significantly improve its environmental performance and liveability. Since co-authoring Greenpeace's Strategy for a Sustainable Sydney in 1992, he has been an active advocate of ecologically sustainable design principles. He was instrumental in the formulation of BASIX, and more recently worked with Kinesis on the PRECINX sustainability assessment tool for Landcom: which has received both state and national planning awards. He also has an interest in cultural planning and is a board member of the Historic Houses Trust, Australia and is a member of the UrbanGrowth NSW project review panel. http://sw.net.au/home/ http://sydney.edu.au/architecture/programs_of_study/postgraduate/urban_design.shtml

Apple CEO Tim Cook discusses the 25 year plan he developed while a student at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business and why you should veer away from such plans. Cook spoke as part of his class reunion at the school.(www.fuqua.duke.edu) --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- APPLE CEO AND FUQUA ALUM TIM COOK TALKS LEADERSHIP AT DUKE Tim Cook spoke to students and alums when he returned for his 25th reunion "Explore everything. Push the corners of your mind. Just get on this kind of continual learning roller coaster and see what happens." This was among the advice Apple CEO Tim Cook shared with students at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business on April 26th. Back on campus for his 25-year reunion, Cook took part in an hour-long dialogue with Fuqua Dean Bill Boulding and the students in a jam-packed Geneen Auditorium buzzing with excitement to hear from the leader of the world's most profitable company. The Apple CEO has embarked on a career far different than he had envisioned after graduating from Fuqua's Evening Executive MBA program in 1988. "For me the journey was not predictable at all. You have to find your own north star and stay with your north star." As 450 Daytime MBA students prepared to graduate, Cook advised the students to heed Abraham Lincoln's words of wisdom: "I will prepare and someday my chance will come." Cook shared the three keys to his leadership at Apple: people, strategy, and execution. "If you get those three right the world is a great place." Students were able to get a unique glimpse into Cook's motivation, inspiration and leadership role models. Raised in the south and a witness to racial injustice, Cook described his admiration for Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Junior's bravery in risking their lives to fight for what they believed in. He has just three photos in his office: two of Kennedy and one of King. Cook was asked when to follow strict principles of business theory and when to break the rules. His response stressed the importance of risks and learning from failure. "You should rarely follow the rules. What Fuqua teaches you so well is how to learn and how to collaborate. Write your own rules." This message resonated with first-year MBA student Shelby Hall. "I know this follows Steve Jobs' belief that Apple creates products which consumers didn't ever know existed," she said. "It was interesting to hear Tim Cook's perspective on how we should balance writing our own rules while applying the foundations of business taught here at Fuqua." Cook also spoke about some of his recollections from Fuqua. "The people made it an incredible experience. It was great for me to see how bright people approached solutions in different ways." First-year MBA student Juan Danzilo says Cook's willingness to share his experiences shows a deep commitment to Fuqua. "Tim Cook's presence reflects Fuqua's sense of community. His humility and eloquence is admirable. It certainly was a unique opportunity for MBA students to hear from such an inspirational leader."

"Community Based Strategic Planning" will offer a framework for strategic planning that is inextricably rooted in the community served, whether that's a political subdivision, a college or university campus, a school district, or a corporation. Participants will gain hands on experience with tools they can use to create an effective, useful plan that uses library strengths to address authentic, rather than assumed, community needs and desires. The workshop will cover four vital steps in successful strategic planning: • Assessment. What does the library do well now? What services need more investment? Which services can be retired? • Community understanding. How do we develop a deep understanding of the way our community lives now? What are the best projections for the community’s future? • Bedrock beliefs. What are the library’s guiding principles? How do we negotiate principles, outcomes, and techniques to focus on what’s truly important? • Implementation. How do we apply library skills and expertise to the needs and desires in the community? How do we move from planning to reality? The goal of the workshop is to provide a simple framework that can be scaled and adapted for a variety of libraries, in communities large or small. And there's no law that says we can’t have some fun along the way!

What is an M&E plan? A monitoring and evaluation plan details the logical framework, indicators, tools that will be utilized when operationalizing the monitoring and evaluation system. During the planning exercise, it becomes very vital to have present an M&E plan that has been developed using participatory means. Programs that are bringing development to communities will find it easier when M&E interventions are documented for the smooth running of an organization. Periodic training is required for all programme personnel to also familiarize themselves with the Monitoring and evaluation framework. To learn more about M&E please subscribe to this channel; when a project commences, it is always necessary to conduct a baseline survey. By doing this survey a project manager will be best able to understand the baseline situation (or situation prior to project implementation). Community based interventions are usually long term in duration and to be best able to inform project management on the successes over a period of time, it is very necessary to conduct a baseline. Methodologies on conducting such surveys vary however, when proper approaches are employed then benchmarks can easily be set that can be used to measure progress over subsequent years. This video explains what a baseline is and highlights why this is important.
