ABOUT THIS COURSE We encounter signals and systems extensively in our day-to-day lives, from making a phone call, listening to a song, editing photos, manipulating audio files, using speech recognition softwares like Siri and Google now, to taking EEGs, ECGs and X-Ray images. Each of these involves gathering, storing, transmitting and processing information from the physical world. This course will equip you to deal with these tasks efficiently by learning the basic mathematical framework of signals and systems. This course is divided into two parts. In the first part (EE210.1x), we explore the various properties of signals and systems, characterization of Linear Shift Invariant Systems, convolution and Fourier Transform. Building on that, in the 2nd part (EE210.2x) we will deal with the Sampling theorem, Z-Transform, discrete Fourier transform and Laplace transform. The contents of the first part are prerequisites for doing this part. Ideas introduced in this course will be useful in understanding further electrical engineering courses which deal with control systems, communication systems, power systems, digital signal processing, statistical signal analysis and digital message transmission. The concepts taught in this course are also useful to students of other disciplines like mechanical, chemical, aerospace and other branches of engineering and science. The Waveforms, Definition and Basic Concepts of each digital modulation Techniques are discussed here. This Video also explains the basic difference between digital modulation and analog modulation. The digital modulation techniques are amplitude shift keying (ASK), frequency shift keying (FSK) and Phase shift keying (PSK). First of all let's understand, what is modulation? Modulation is a process, where some characteristic of the carrier wave (amplitude, frequency or phase) is varied in accordance with the instantaneous value of the modulating (message or baseband) signal. So if amplitude of the carrier wave is varied, then it is called as amplitude modulation, but if frequency or phase of the carrier wave is varied, according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal, then it is known as frequency modulation or phase modulation respectively. So now let's Understand the basic difference between continuous wave modulation and digital modulation- Difference between Continuous Wave Modulation and Digital Modulation- Amplitude Modulation (AM), Frequency Modulation (FM) and Phase Modulation (PM) are the examples of Continuous Wave (CW) modulation, while Amplitude Shift Keying (ASK), Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) and Phase Shift Keying (PSK) are examples of Digital Modulation Techniques. The basic difference between continuous wave Modulation and digital modulation techniques is based on the nature of message signal (modulating signal). In continuous wave modulation, the message signal is of analog nature but in digital modulation, the message signal is of digital nature (Binary or M-ary encoded version). In both of these modulation techniques, the carrier wave is of analog form. Here it is interesting to note that, the three forms of digital modulation techniques that is ASK, FSK and PSK are analogous to AM, FM and PM of continuous wave modulation respectively. So now let's discuss each digital modulation technique (ASK, FSK and PSK) in detail- Amplitude shift keying (ASK) In ASK, the amplitude of the carrier wave is changed (switched) according to the digital input signal (modulating signal). Therefore amplitude shift keying is analogous to Amplitude Modulation (analog modulation). ASK is analogous to AM, because in Amplitude Modulation (AM), amplitude of the carrier wave is changed according to the instantaneous value of the modulating (message) signal, in the same way in ASK also, the amplitude of the carrier wave is switched (varied) according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal (digital input signal). The difference is only of the nature of the modulating signal. In amplitude modulation, the modulating signal is of analog kind but in digital modulation, it is a stream of digital bits. the amplitude of the sinusoidal carrier wave is switched, as per the digital input signal. The carrier wave is either not transmitted or transmitted for digital input signal '0' or '1' respectively. That is why amplitude shift keying (ASK) is also called as "ON - OFF Keying (OOK)". Now we will discuss the Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) Frequency Shift Keying (FSK) If the frequency of sinusoidal carrier wave is varied (switched) as per the digital input signal, then it is known as the frequency shift keying (FSK). It is analogous to frequency modulation (analog modulation). The reason behind why FSK is analogous to FM, is.... In Frequency Modulation (FM), the frequency of the carrier wave is varied according to the instantaneous value of the modulating signal, in the same way in frequency shift keying also, the frequency of the sinusoidal carrier wave is varied (switched) as per the digital input signal. The difference is only of the nature of the modulating signal. In FM the modulating signal is of analogue nature while in FSK modulating signal is digital. So here the basic purpose of Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), is to modulate (change/switch) the frequency of the carrier wave, according to the digital input signal. So in Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), we have two types of frequencies of the carrier wave, low frequency for the transmission of '0' and high frequency for the transmission of '1'. In this way, in Frequency Shift Keying (FSK), the information of the digital input signal is present in the frequency variations of the carrier wave. That is why it is known as frequency shift keying. Now let's discuss the Phase Shift Keying (PSK) Phase Shift Keying (PSK) In phase shift keying, phase of the carrier wave (analog) is varied as per the digital input signal. Phase shift keying is analogous to Phase Modulation (analogue phase modulation). The phase shift keying is very much similar to Phase Modulation (PM), because in both of these modulation techniques

Today’s world is going digital, so it is really important to understand, the advantages of digital communication, that are responsible for the digitalization everywhere. So here in this post, we will see, why digital communication is preferred over analog communication? But there are also some disadvantages associated with the digital communication. These disadvantages will also be discussed here. So first let's start with the advantages of digital communication. Advantages of digital communication # Digital communication systems are simpler and cheaper in implementation as compared to analog communication systems. It has become possible due to advancements in Integrated Circuits (IC) technology. These ICs are very small in size, reliable and cost-effective. Such ICs are used in digital communication, # In digital communication, it is possible to use multiplexing to merge speech, video and other forms of data for transmission over a common channel. The multiplexing is of various types like Time Division Multiplexing (TDM), Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM) or Code Division Multiplexing (CDM). I don’t want to deviate from the current topic, so I will discuss the multiplexing in separate post. # High level of privacy can be obtained in digital communication using data encryption technique. This privacy provides the facility to allow the transmitted signals, to be received only by the permitted receivers. This feature is of great importance in military applications. # In digital communication channel encoding is used. Because of this encoding, there is less accumulation of noise from repeater to repeater, in case of long-distance communication. Apart from this, the digital signals tend to be less affected by noise as compared to analog signals. # It is possible to perform lots of operations on digital signals, like Digital Signal Processing (DSP), data compression, image processing etc. # It is easy to detect and correct errors in digital communication. This easy detection and correction of errors is possible due to the use of channel coding in digital communication. So these were the advantages of using digital communication. These benefits encourage the use of digital communication in place of analog communication. Now we will discuss some disadvantages that are associated with the digital communication. Disadvantages of digital communication # More transmission bandwidth is required in digital communication as compared to analog communication. This is due to the increase in the data rate when analog signal is converted into digital signal. # In digital communication, in case of synchronous modulation, synchronization is required. # Due to various stages used in conversion, high power consumption is another drawback of digital communication. # Sampling error is introduced in the sampling of signal. # Circuits that are used in digital communication are comparatively more complex and sophisticated. So this was the discussion about both advantages and disadvantages of digital communication but it’s worth mentioning that the advantages of using digital communication are more in comparison to disadvantages. This video lecture discusses Coherent and Noncoherent Digital Modulation Techniques. Here Coherent Vs Noncoherent Detection is explained. Various Advantages (Benefits) and Disadvantages (Drawbacks) of Coherent and Noncoherent Detection techniques are covered. Some Digital modulation techniques use Synchronous detection where the local carrier and carrier at the transmitter are phase locked. they are synchronized (coherent) in both frequency and phase. While the Noncoherent detection does not require the two oscillators (Carriers) to be phase locked. Coherent Vs Non Coherent Modulation (Introduction) On the Basis of presence of Phase-Recovery circuit, we can classify digital modulation techniques into coherent or non coherent techniques. The job of the phase recovery circuit is to keep the oscillators supplying locally generated carrier wave at the receiver; in synchronizm to the oscillator supplying carrier wave at the transmitting end. Actually, We use carrier waves at the transmitting and receiving ends both and for coherent detection these two Carriers should be in synchronism. Here synchronism means, synchronization in both frequency and phase. Coherent Digital Modulation Technique This technique employs coherent detection, the local carrier wave which is generated at the receiver is phase locked with the carrier at the transmitter. Hence both the oscillators (carrier waves) are synchronized in both frequency and phase. In coherent digital modulation technique, The error probability decreases but the system becomes complex. Non Coherent Digital Modulation Technique In non coherent digital modulation technique, there is no need for the two carriers (at transmitter and receiver) to be phase locked. Although in non-coherent technique the system becomes simple but the error probability increases which is in contrast to the coherent detection method. COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS: BANDWIDTH OF SIGNAL: In a communication system, the message signal can be voice, music, picture or computer data. Each of these signals has different ranges of frequencies. The type of communication system needed for a given signal depends on the band of frequencies which is considered essential for the communication process. For speech signals, frequency range 300 Hz to 3100 Hz is considered adequate. Therefore speech signal requires a bandwidth of 2800 Hz 3100 hertz – 300 hertz for commercial telephonic communication. To transmit music, an approximate bandwidth of 20 kHz is required because of the high frequencies produced by the musical instruments. The audible range of frequencies extends from 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Video signals for transmission of pictures require about 4.2 MHz of bandwidth. A TV signal contains both voice and picture and is usually allocated 6 MHz of bandwidth for transmission.In the preceeding paragraph, we have considered only analog signals. Digital signals are in the form of rectangular waves as shown in Figure. However, for practical purposes, the contribution from higher harmonics can be neglected, thus limiting the bandwidth. As a result, received waves are a distorted version of the transmitted one. If the bandwidth is large enough to accommodate a few harmonics, the information is not lost and the rectangular signal is more or less recovered. This is so because the higher the harmonic, less is its contribution to the wave form.

Communication electronics can be classified as, (i) Analog communication and (ii) Digital communication In analog communication, analog signals are used. An analog signal is a continuously varying voltage or current. Traditionally, in telephone and radio systems, the messages consisted of information conveyed by voice.Shortcomings of analog communication is also explain in this video. A digital communication system offers many advantages to the user, that cannot be achieved with an analog system. Digital communications system may make use of analog links and concepts.The term data is commonly used in digital communication systems. Data is any form of information, that has been put into digital form, so that it can be handled by a digital system. Advantages (i) The transmission quality is high and almost independent of the distance between the terminals. (ii) The capacity of the transmission system can be increased. (iii) The newer types of transmission media such as light beams in optical fibers and wave guides operating in the microwave frequency extensively use digital communication. Disadvantages (i) A digital system requires larger bandwidth. (ii) It is very difficult to gradually change over from analog to digital transmission.

This video discusses sampling and quantization of analog signal with the help of waveform of sampled signal and quantized signal. The sampling and quantization technique s used in pcm to convert analog signals into binary signals. For more details you can visit my BLOG- http://www.engineeringmadeeasypro.com/ Sampling of signal The second part of this image, shows the sampled signal. In the process of sampling of the signal, we convert the continuous time signal into discrete time signal. You can see this conversion in the sampled signal shown in the image. The analog signal was continuous in time, since it had some value at every instant of time. But in the sampled signal, which is discrete in time, the value of the signal is present only at certain instants of time. Accuracy of the sampling increases with increase in frequency of the sampling. But some sampling error is introduced because of this sampling process, since it is not possible to have infinite sampling frequency practically. Sampling of the analog signal is performed with the help of sampling theorem. So let me define here, what is sampling theorem. Sampling Theorem:- A continuous-time signal can be completely represented in its samples and recovered back into its original form if the sampling frequency is greater than or equal to twice the highest frequency present in the modulating signal (message signal). It can be represented mathematically as- fs is greater than or equal to 2fm Here 'fs' is the sampling frequency and 'fm' is the highest frequency present in the modulating signal. Quantization of Signal To understand the process of quantization look at the image given above. In the process of quantization, amplitude of the signal is cut horizontally into a number of fixed levels. Now the value of the signal is rounded-off (approximated) to the nearest level of amplitude. These certain levels of amplitude are shown in the image on the vertical axis. Here we have divided the amplitude range (peak to peak amplitude) into 'l' number of levels. The magnitude of each level is equal to the peak to peak amplitude range divided by the number of levels. It is important to note here that, quantized signal is just an approximation of the original signal. As the number of levels increases, the accuracy of quantization increases. Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) technique uses the process of quantization to convert analog signals into digital signals. Once a basic foundation is provided, all using hands-on Python code examples in a Jupyter notebook, I will move to more advanced topics relative to statistical signal processing, digital communications and software defined radio. Digital communication transmitter and receiver simulations will be explored using Python code modules found in the newly posted scikit-dsp-comm as well as data acquisition code used in conjunction with a popular $20 software-defined radio USB dongle (RTL-SDR). The capstone portion of the tutorial will have the students write code to recover FM stereo radio broadcasts from a raw complex signal file obtained from the output of a popular $20 software defined radio module (the RTLSDR). Hardware will be provided for small groups to work together.

Analog Signal:- An analog signal is a continuous wave denoted by a sine wave (pictured below) and may vary in signal strength (amplitude) or frequency (time). The sine wave's amplitude value can be seen as the higher and lower points of the wave, while the frequency (time) value is measured in the sine wave's physical length from left to right. There are many examples of analog signals around us. The sound from a human voice is analog, because sound waves are continuous, as is our own vision, because we see various shapes and colors in a continuous manner due to light waves. Even a typical kitchen clock having its hands moving continuously can be represented as an analog signal. Digital Signal A digital signal - a must for computer processing - is described as using binary (0s and 1s), and therefore, cannot take on any fractional values. As illustrated in the graphic below, digital signals retain a uniform structure, providing a constant and consistent signal. Because of the inherent reliability of the digital signal, technology using it is rapidly replacing a large percentage of analog applications and devices. For example, the wristwatch, showing the time of day, with its minute, hour, and sweeping second hands, is being replaced by the digital watch, which offers the time of day and other information using a numerical display. A typical digital signal is represented by 1s and 0s .
