Rod Garratt, UCSB Professor of Economics, describes his work on a project to build a proof of concept for a wholesale interbank payment system that facilitates payments of central bank digital currency using a distributed ledger. Which crypto currencies should you invest in? There's 1,000's of different crypto currencies and the most popular right now are the ones on coinbase.com because everyone and their grandma are starting to hear about bitcoin now. You have Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ripple, Dash, Iota, Verge, and 100's of other noteworthy crypto currency coins worth investing in so how do you know which one to buy? Well there's a simple principle that I like to follow and it's called buy low, sell high. Sounds too easy but it really is that simple as long as you don't let your emotions take over and make irrational trades like selling at lows and buying at highs when the market is fluctuating. That's why I recommend you follow AltcoinBuzz to know which alt coins are worth investing into and no they did not pay me to recommend their channel I just got results following their advice so I thought it would be worth sharing with you so you can get results too. The real value of bitcoin and crypto currency technology - The Blockchain explained

06:16
Donations are welcome at: 1AtFaRrPFiwm2xUYN2C41edGgKPR5AXYDh Blockchain and Bitcoin explained in five minutes: Blockchain technology will drastically change our lives. In the coming years, Blockchain, the technology behind crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, will inevitably and radically change the role of traditional trusted parties such as banks, accountants, notaries, and governments. The animated video about Blockchain and Bitcoin that was released today on http://bitcoinproperly.org is the first to specifically address the technology behind Bitcoin: the Blockchain. Within five minutes, it is explained how the essential functions of the “trusted third party” can be automatized through the Blockchain as well as what the implications of this are. From Bitcoin hype to Blockchain revolution: an internet of trust. With the arrival of crypto currencies such as Bitcoin, everyone around the world can trade with each other without any involvement from traditional third parties such as banks, notaries, accountants, and governments. Trade is a fundamental pillar of our economy and society, and traditional trusted parties play a crucial role in this. The technology behind Bitcoin making all this possible – the Blockchain – ensures that the essential functions of the “trusted third party’, are fully automatized through the internet. This way, these functions are as freely available, accessible, and programmable as the internet itself. The animated video, available in both Dutch and English, explains how this works, also mentioning practical applications. The implications are clear: in the coming years, the role of the traditional trusted parties will inevitably and drastically change, strongly impacting our daily lives. The creators of this animated video invite its viewers to think about and discuss the fundamental and radical innovations made possible by crypto currencies. Rutger van Zuidam founder of Dutchchain, organizer of the Dutch Blockchain Hackathon: “The Netherlands have all the assets to become Europe’s Silicon Valley of financial technology. It is possible for the Netherlands to position itself favourably in comparison to the US and UK, who are currently still ahead. The technology behind crypto currencies like Bitcoin plays an essential role in leveraging these opportunities. We hope that the animated video about the technology behind crypto currencies will positively affect this development.” Lykle de Vries: ”Bitcoin is not the new money for internet, but it is the new internet for money, value and ownership in all forms. Crypto currencies like Bitcoin are the next step in the emancipation of all world citizens, and can help create a new dynamic for democracy, society and economy.” About the creators The animated video is a non-profit initiative by designers Patrick Loonstra (www.patrickloonstra.nl) and Sebas van den Brink (sebasvandenbrink.nl) and entrepreneurs Lykle de Vries (ThesisOne.com) and Rutger van Zuidam (DutchChain.com).

#1 Lesson I Learned Investing in Cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Dash

11:28
Investing in cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dash, Litecoin, and more is a huge chance to make money AND by definition an opportunity to spend a lot of time, energy, and capital only to end up breaking even or losing money. After three years of investing, trading, speculating, obsessing, buying, selling, guessing, analyzing, and predicting, what have I found today that works to get the very highest return with the lowest amount of risk and the least amount of problems? Take the complete class free at http://jerry.tips/cryptor or hear the short version in this video where I share the value of a buy and hold strategy done every month which I learned in MONEY Master the Game by Tony Robbins which he learned by interviewing many of the world's top financial gurus and billionaires. I translated the advice for me into first buying one cryptocurrency named Dash which I believed was way undervalued because it provides dividends every month when holding a masternode. To take action, I bought over 1,000 Dash to make a masternode at the end of December of 2016 and the beginning of January 2017. As soon as I did this, I started talking about Dash on my YouTube channel and podcast when the price was under $20 with the total to get a masternode under $20,000. As I continued to talk about Dash and get more involved in the community over the next few months, the price spiked to over $100 for a Dash meaning over $100,000 for a masternode. Today the price is currently around $85 and I am planning to hold my masternode indefinitely. The success of the masternode investment has tempted me to fortunately make the same mistakes I already made except on a bigger level. On several days I have been tempted to sell the masternode and then try and trade with it to make even more money. When I review the prices, I also see that the original $10,000 that is now $85,000 I could have turned into over a million dollars if I had made the right buys and sells. The problem is how do you know when to buy and when to sell? Unless you have an explicit insider advantage, which often is illegal, it is extremely difficult to accurately predict what will happen. At the same time, it is easy to get lucky and feel smarter than everyone else. With all of this in mind, I have been asking how can I consistently invest in these digital currencies online and build a retirement portfolio that profits from the gains and minimizes losses? What I am doing now and quickly explain in the video is doing a buy and hold strategy each month the same way as I have done previously with retirement accounts. Every month I pick a day to invest about 0.5 Bitcoin on Bitfinex buying everything there except Dash which allows me to invest in most of the top cryptos. On that same day I put another 0.01 Bitcoin into the top 50 Poloniex currencies excepting those I already have on Bitfinex and Coinbase where I buy $10 a day in Bitcoin and $10 a day in Ethereum. Get $10 on Coinbase when you sign up with my link and fund your account with $100 at https://www.coinbase.com/join/53f220834b1a7fd652000013. This strategy eliminates the majority of the problems I have faced so far investing and allows me to essentially bet the entire market without having to care what the price is day to day. Living, Breathing, & Betting on Bitcoin | Outliers Ep. 2

Odds are that you’ve been hearing more and more about cryptocurrency as digital tokens like bitcoin and ethereum have become valuable commodities. Converts (and investors) say that cryptocurrencies built on blockchain technology represent the future of money, finance, and commerce. But skeptics say that digital currencies represent crowd-sourced pyramid schemes or are fuel for another tech bubble. We met with Olaf Carlson-Wee, who was the first employee at the cryptocurrency broker Coinbase, where he famously took his entire salary in bitcoin. Now, Carlson-Wee runs a hedge fund that deals exclusively in crypto-assets. We talked with Carlson-Wee in San Francisco about money, trust, and how he made his friends rich. There are several types of wallets that provide different ways to store and access your digital currency. Wallets can be broken down into three distinct categories – software, hardware, and paper. Software wallets can be a desktop, mobile or online. Desktop: wallets are downloaded and installed on a PC or laptop. They are only accessible from the single computer in which they are downloaded. Desktop wallets offer one of the highest levels of security however if your computer is hacked or gets a virus there is the possibility that you may lose all your funds. Online: wallets run on the cloud and are accessible from any computing device in any location. While they are more convenient to access, online wallets store your private keys online and are controlled by a third party which makes them more vulnerable to hacking attacks and theft. Mobile: wallets run on an app on your phone and are useful because they can be used anywhere including retail stores. Mobile wallets are usually much smaller and simpler than desktop wallets because of the limited space available on a mobile. Hardware: wallets differ from software wallets in that they store a user’s private keys on a hardware device like a USB. Although hardware wallets make transactions online, they are stored offline which delivers increased security. Hardware wallets can be compatible with several web interfaces and can support different currencies; it just depends on which one you decide to use. What’s more, making a transaction is easy. Users simply plug in their device to any internet enabled computer or device, enter a pin, send currency and confirm. Hardware wallets make it possible to easily transact while also keeping your money offline and away from danger. Paper: wallets are easy to use and provide a very high level of security. While the term paper wallet can simply refer to a physical copy or printout of your public and private keys, it can also refer to a piece of software that is used to securely generate a pair of keys which are then printed. Using a paper wallet is relatively straightforward. Transferring Bitcoin or any other currency to your paper wallet is accomplished by the transfer of funds from your software wallet to the public address shown on your paper wallet. Alternatively, if you want to withdraw or spend currency, all you need to do is transfer funds from your paper wallet to your software wallet. This process, often referred to as ‘sweeping,’ can either be done manually by entering your private keys or by scanning the QR code on the paper wallet. Bitstamp at https://www.bitstamp.net might be the best global option if you can make a deposit with SEPA in the EU or a wire transfer in nearly any other country because Bitstamp's help at https://www.bitstamp.net/account/deposit/ states "REST OF THE WORLD. International bank transfer deposits carry 0.05% deposit fee on our side (minimum fee = 7.50 USD/EUR) and take 2 - 5 business days to credit. USD deposits credited to your USD balance won't be converted. All other currencies will be converted to the selected balance currency, free of charge." Ripple as XRP and Bitcoin as BTC are both available to trade with fiat currencies on Bitstamp. Credit cards can also be used to make purchases on Bitstamp with fees ranging from 5% to 8% as listed at https://www.bitstamp.net/fee_schedule/. Kraken at https://www.kraken.com has the greatest current selection I have found for an exchange which accepts incoming fiat deposits while trading with the most altcoins. Kraken accepts EUR SEPA deposits, USD, GBP, EUR, and JPY wire deposits as well as witdrawals. For Canadian dollars, wire deposits are free and EFT withdrawals are $10 with a $25,000 daily max. In addition to Bitcoin, Kraken allows USD with EUR and a few CAD or JPY directly to Ethereum, Ripple, Ethereum Classic, Litecoin, Dash, Monero, Zcash, USDT, Gnosis, and Stellar Lumens with Iconomi available from ETH and XBT which is Bitcoin. GDAX operates in the US, Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, and Singapore at https://www.gdax.com/ trading in BTC/USD, ETH/USD, ETH/BTC, LTC/USD, LTC/BTC, BTC/EUR, and BTC/GBP. Gemini at https://gemini.com is available in Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Korea, United Kingdom, and the United States of America in 44 states with BTC/USD, ETH/BTC, and ETH/USD available for all via US Dollar wire transfers. xBTCe at https://www.xbtce.com accepts wire transfers from many countries including the USA, China, and Russia with native language support in English, Russian, and Chinese. Wall of Coins at https://wallofcoins.com/en/ is available in the USA, Canada, and more countries soon for direct cash deposits via local bank accounts in Bitcoin and Dash. Local Bitcoins at https://localbitcoins.com/ allows buyers and sellers in 248 countries to make cash and online transactions directly for Bitcoin with generally 10% or higher above marketplace costs. In summary, I think Coinbase, Bitstamp, and Kraken are three of the best places online to use USD, EUR, CAD, and GBP to buy directly into Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Ripple, Dash, and more altcoins. GDAX, Gemini, and xBTCe are great alternatives especially for KRW, JPY, RUB, and CNH. Wall of Coins and Local Bitcoins are effective for changing cash to Bitcoin to then use on an exchange like Bittrex or Poloniex. A brief history of money - From gold to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies

06:28
https://www.udemy.com/blockchain-for-business-the-new-industrial-revolution/?couponCode=YOUTUBE A brief history of money - let's consider the concept of money as an abstraction of value. Money is as old as human civilisation and civilisation itself is reliant on possessing ways in which to exchange, account for, and transfer value. What once started as barter trade (trading goods for goods) was replaced using standardized token money. Gold and silver were the first universally accepted natural choices for money. Actually, they fit the bill so well that they were the primary form of money for centuries across the globe and have been instilled in human culture... I bet when I say "gold" you instinctively think of value or wealth. After this came paper money – a more user-friendly way to carry and move around value compared to precious metals. China was the first to adopt it in the 7th century. The first European banknotes weren't issued until the 17th century. It took people several centuries to accept the new paradigm at the time and shift from gold and silver coins to banknotes backed by these same precious metals as the widely used form of money. This led to the birth of 'the gold standard'. The banknotes themselves didn't hold any intrinsic value like gold and silver coins do. Instead, paper money was backed by precious metals (like gold and silver) stored in a treasury vault somewhere. This was the case until 1944. At the end of World War II, yet another related system was introduced, the "gold exchange standard", under the Bretton Woods agreement. This meant that many countries fixed their national currencies’ exchange rates to the US dollar which was in turn convertible to gold at a fixed rate. Not only that, but this convertibility was no longer available to individuals or companies, only to central banks. However, the Bretton Woods system ended in 1971, when the US dollar convertibility to gold was terminated. So long "the gold standard" and commodity-linked money. Paper money is no longer backed by gold or anything else tangible but just faith! Welcome to the world of fiat currencies! So how does paper hold any value if it's not backed by anything? Well, that's where concepts like legal tender come in. The fiat system, which we still use today, has governments assign value to a currency, declaring it a legal tender. This means a government decides whether a medium of payment will be recognised for financial transactions, trade settlement or commerce in a country or jurisdiction. Throughout all these stages we had an idea of value in our mind but it has evolved hand in hand with our civilisation and technology. From something you can touch and actually use, to something you can touch but cannot use except for trade, to just an abstract idea. Digital Currencies & Blockchain

01:04:50
On the 8th of March Room for Discussion will host a session on cryptocurrencies and the world that blockchain technology promises to bring. Bitcoin, the cryptocurrency that launched just a few weeks after the collapse of Lehman Brothers, is currently worth an estimated $41 billion. Digital coins like Bitcoin have become a global phenomenon. There are currently just under 1400 different coins in circulation, trading on 190 digital exchanges. How do these coins differentiate themselves, what aspects give them a viable future and do they have the potential to replace currency as we know it? This ‘monetary revolution’ has put regulators on edge. China and South Korea have banned initial coin offerings (ICO’s), and most countries force users to identify themselves when trading crypto-coins. It is imperative that regulators find a perfect balance in the trade-off between protecting consumers and encouraging innovation. Cryptocurrencies carry a very ideological philosophy with them. Blockchain, the underlying technology of cryptocurrencies, could facilitate a world that enables us to trust strangers without a third party necessary to verify transactions. This has the potential to change our lives and threaten the position of established ‘trust-based’ institutions. How would this blockchain ruled world, without intermediaries, look? We hope to see you on the 8th of March, from 13.00 to 14.00 in the E-hall of Roeterseilandcampus. Our guests for this session are Masahiro Yasu (Founder and CEO of Alis—the first Japanese social media platform using blockchain) and Alfred Prevoo (financial economist and former supervisor at the European Central Bank. Currently managing an investment institution focused on cryptocurrencies) What: Cryptocurrencies and the Blockchain Who: : Alfred Prevoo and Masahiro Yasu When: Thursday, March 8, 13.00 to 14.00 Where: E-Hal, Roeterseiland Interviewers: Olaf Vrijmoet and Joshua Nooij --- Do you want to see more interviews and be the first to hear about upcoming guests? Evolution of Bitcoin - Full Documentary 2017 [HD] #Advexon

Check Top 100 Richest Bitcoin Address: https://steemit.com/bitcoin/@advexon/top-100-richest-bitcoin-address Evolution of f Bitcoin - Full Documentary 2017 [HD] Bitcoin is a form of digital currency, created and held electronically. No one controls it. Bitcoins aren’t printed, like dollars or euros – they’re produced by people, and increasingly businesses, running computers all around the world, using software that solves mathematical problems. It’s the first example of a growing category of money known as cryptocurrency. What makes it different from normal currencies? Bitcoin can be used to buy things electronically. In that sense, it’s like conventional dollars, euros, or yen, which are also traded digitally. However, bitcoin’s most important characteristic, and the thing that makes it different to conventional money, is that it is decentralized. No single institution controls the bitcoin network. This puts some people at ease, because it means that a large bank can’t control their money. Who created it? A software developer called Satoshi Nakamoto proposed bitcoin, which was an electronic payment system based on mathematical proof. The idea was to produce a currency independent of any central authority, transferable electronically, more or less instantly, with very low transaction fees. Who prints it? No one. This currency isn’t physically printed in the shadows by a central bank, unaccountable to the population, and making its own rules. Those banks can simply produce more money to cover the national debt, thus devaluing their currency. Instead, bitcoin is created digitally, by a community of people that anyone can join. Bitcoins are ‘mined’, using computing power in a distributed network. This network also processes transactions made with the virtual currency, effectively making bitcoin its own payment network. * Subscribe for more Scientific & Technological Videos * Like & Share * go to our website http://www.advexon.com * Share your ideas and comment

Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining explained

07:46
https://www.udemy.com/blockchain-for-business-the-new-industrial-revolution/?couponCode=YOUTUBE Bitcoin and cryptocurrency mining explained with the the Byzantine Generals Problem. The Byzantine Generals problem was first introduced in a computer science paper published in 1982. The problem discussed in the paper is that reliable computer systems must be able to function effectively in the presence of faulty components that may send conflicting information to different parts of the system. This issue is even more acute when we talk about decentralized computer networks. Imagine the following thought experiment: The Byzantine army has surrounded an enemy city. The army is organized into several units. Each unit is commanded by a general and they all need to come up with a coordinated plan of action. However, they are located away from each other and the only means to communicate among themselves is via messages. To make things more complicated, one or more of the generals are possibly traitors. The presence of disloyal generals means that misleading messages could be sent aiming to disrupt any coordinated plan of action, be it attack or retreat. To find a successful solution to this conundrum, the Byzantine army needs to find its path to coordinated action, one way or another. To achieve this, the Byzantine army needs an algorithm that works effectively towards a coordinated outcome where the loyal generals follow it and the traitors don’t. Now that you are familiar with the problem, let’s see its solution. It is called the Byzantine Fault Tolerance algorithm. Over the years, there have been several proposed theoretical solutions involving game theory and math. The first practical implementation of Byzantine Fault Tolerance algorithm came with the Bitcoin’s Proof-of-Work. In this case the “generals” are nodes on the Bitcoin network, also known as “miners”. A network node is a connection point that can receive, create, store and send data across a network. In other words, nodes are the connected dots that make up a network. To simplify, think of it in the following way. In the image we traditionally use to depict a blockchain, every single computer is a separate node. They are all connected and can receive, create, store, and send data to each other. In the context of the Byzantine Fault Tolerance algorithm, the important concept to grasp is that these mining nodes start from the assumption that nobody else on the network can be trusted. Proof-of-Work secures network consensus even in the presence of non-compliant nodes. That is, even if there are some Byzantine generals who are not acting in the army’s best interest, coordinated action can still be achieved. Let’s see how this mechanism works in Bitcoin. As we all know by now, Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer network where all activities are done by its users through appropriate software and hardware. These activities include making transactions, receiving transactions, and verifying and transmitting transactions. Now, this is where we need to introduce the concept of “mining”, which many of you have probably heard. Mining is an activity, carried out by network participants, which involves Proof-of-Work and results in generating new coins as a reward for the miner who successfully did this Proof-of-Work first for each new block. Navigating Investments from Cryptocurrencies to Blockchain

58:34
The meteoric increase in value of cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ether and Litecoin - and many others - has ignited a worldwide investment frenzy and frequent double-digit price fluctuations. Such volatility has led many of the preeminent voices in finance, including Jamie Dimon and Warren Buffett, to call Bitcoin a "fraud" and "mirage." And yet the collective market capitalization of Bitcoin and the other Top 10 digital currencies is roughly half a trillion USD. Lite Coin Vs. Bitcoin & Digital Currency Future - Bitcoin Gold - Litecoin Silver?

Bitcoin, the alternative cryptocurrency, is the trendiest answer to 'What's in your wallet?' since, well, a certain credit card. The value of Bitcoins has skyrocketed over the last year, as the digital currency is used to pay colleges tuitions, assassins' contracts and the paycheck for a police chief in Kentucky. Now there's another online currency, Litecoin, which was created by former Google employee and MIT student Charles Lee to correct some of Bitcoin's flaws. RT's Meghan Lopez asks Yanis Varoufakis, political economist and author of 'The Global Minotaur,' if cryptocurrencies are just a flash in the pan, or if they're the financial future of the world. Best Cryptocurrency to Invest in? Better than Bitcoin?

08:39
It’s no longer a new thing that both Bitcoin and Ethereum has and is still making a lot of people "stupid rich” $10(ten dollars) seven years ago is now worth $7.5 million in bitcoins today. And $100 (hundred dollars) in Ethereum has increased to as high as $66,290 in under two years! The trend is on a daily increase, worldwide, investors in crypto and digital currencies are getting rich daily, I personally have invested in bitcoin and Ethereum. And I've collected bigger gains investing these coins than in anything else in my life. For example, I bought bitcoin twice, last year and early this year, 10 coins at $83.40. And 20 more at $128. Today my 20 coins trade nearly 24 times higher. And I also bought Ethereum last November at $9.70... Before it rocketed to $355! I was up over 3,500%. But here is the thing nobody is talking about, bitcoin and Ethereum aren't the real success stories anymore. It's the smaller and unpopular new digital currencies that are rewarding investors with the next round of huge wins. For example, I recently obtained 27,000 coins in a tiny new digital currency for just 18.5 cents per coin. Those coins now trade for around $4 each- 1,981% higher. And I invested in another one that's jumped from $1.50 to $10.71. Yet this opportunity is just getting started, today I'll show you the new digital currencies that can turn as little as $10 into over $1million. In the blink of an eye. Yes, that's right. A single crispy $10 bill could make you a millionaire. Now for the doubters, not only is it possible, it's actually happening right now, a considerable number of investors worldwide have seen gains of 75,063% in Cryptonite, 59,577% in InfluxCoin, 86,355% in SiaCoin, 60,450% in MaxCoin, and even 823,750% in DubaiCoin! Tiny new digital currencies are offering profits far bigger than bitcoin and much more quickly, I've personally made over 600% in one digital currency more than 1,981 in a second and over 3,500% in another, and I expect to make a whole lot more. Digital currencies is now one of the online investments where you can start with $10 and turn that into real money fast. CNBC did a story about a high school dropout who bought some bitcoin at $12 and is now a millionaire. Also top investors worldwide are going all in on the new digital currencies. Now this is what you guys should know. A new set of coins are being launched now that could help you turn as little as $10 into over $1 million. I've never seen profit opportunities like this before in any market and at any time. For example, in one recent week 23 separate digital currencies doubled in value. By comparison, the S&P 500 hasn't seen a single stock double yet this year. But only those who recognize the opportunity right now will see the fast profits. I first got in on Bitcoin at $83.40 and $128... Only to watch it soar to over $2,000. But now I've turned my attention to the new digital currencies. For example; I invested in ANTSHARES earlier this year and at the time it was trading for just $1.50 but I watched it climb to $10.71 in less than a month. I invested in tiny new digital currencies of 12 coins and I cashed out 12,000 at $3.50 but still hold the rest... nearly $100,000 in total. There are now dozens of small digital currencies trading for just a few cents that are moving up dramatically over very short periods; like Asch traded for few cents at first but in less than 3 months $100=$,570. NolimitCoin traded for few cents but now $100=5,348 in 6 days. MediterraneanCoin traded for few cents but now $100=8,313 in 3 months, the list is endless, and I will stop here so I don't bore you guys, but it is sure worth your time. in case you are interested in venturing into investing in Crypto and Digital Currencies, or perhaps you are trading them but you don't understand what you are doing, feel free to message me and I will be sure to guide and assist with any information you may need to invest in these new and unpopular crypto and digital currencies that are making waves at the moment. What is the Best Cryptocurrency to Invest in? Here is my opinion. Don`t forget that every investment is a risk. Invest only what you can afford to lose. Today is 27th Nov 2017. Price of GRS is 60 cents. Lets see what will happen in a year or two.
Why people are buying cartoon cats on the blockchain

Forget cryptocurrencies. These are cryptocollectibles. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Every time you send something on the internet, it’s a copy. But using new technology, can we make digital goods that are... rare? That’s the question behind CryptoKitties, a new game to buy, breed, and sell digital cats on the blockchain. These cats are more similar to real-world collectibles like beanie babies or baseball cards than they are to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin or Ethereum. In just the last few months, a whole community of third party sites and services has formed around CryptoKitties. And fans have spent more than $23 million playing along. All of this is made possible by the clever and surprising code behind the game. Bitcoin is a new technology that functions as a digital currency. It is a peer-based, decentralized way to hold, store, send, and receive value. It does this by maintaining a cryptographic “ledger” called the Blockchain. All of the bitcoins in existence are created and stored on the Blockchain. Bitcoin with a capital “B” refers to the technology itself. Bitcoin spelled with a little “b” refers to the tokens that hold the value and can be exchanged with others. Multiple copies of the Blockchain exist on thousands if not millions of computers worldwide. Each copy of the Blockchain “verifies” itself by connecting to the Internet and making sure it has the most up-to-date list of transactions. The Blockchain maintains its integrity by using strong, modern, encryption techniques. This makes it impossible for anyone to alter the ledger, create fake transaction or “double-spend” their bitcoins. Bitcoins do not require banks or third-party financial services to act as central clearing houses for electronic transfers. In essence, Bitcoin technology “cuts out the middleman”. Bitcoin is a decentralized, peer-to-peer monetary system that exists outside of the traditional, centralized, fiat-currency based financial system. Is Bitcoin money? Good question! The short answer is yes! But the long answer requires that we talk a little about what “money” is or what it should be. Money is basically an idea. It is a system that we can all agree upon which allows us to exchange value, so we do not have to carry around cows or chickens with us to trade for the things we need. An ideal money or “currency” should have the following properties: Portable Fungible (interchangeability) Dividable Durable Cognizable (easily identified) Stable Does Bitcoin fit the bill? Well it’s certainly portable. It is all digital. It weighs nothing (unlike gold which can be heavy and bulky in large amounts. For that matter, traditional paper currencies can also become heavy and bulky in large amounts!). It can be sent across the room or around the world with the same ease and comfort. You can carry it on a piece of paper, a laptop, or even your smart phone. It is Fungible. Every bitcoin is like every other bitcoin (unlike shells, beads, and traditional precious metal coins which can be “shaved” or diluted in purity) It is dividable. It is actually one of the most dividable currencies ever conceived! It is possible to spend small fractions of bitcoins and no need exists to make change. When was the last time you were able to spend 1/8 of a penny? Bitcoin is durable. It is protected by strong encryption and the Blockchain exists in thousands if not millions of locations simultaneously. You would literally have to delete the blockchain from every computer and smart phone in the world to destroy a bitcoin. Bitcoin is cognizable or easily recognized. It’s based on math. No one can dispute a number or deny that 1 + 1 =2. People are just beginning to understand what Bitcoin is. There is a bit of a learning curve. But once you are familiar with it, you will know it when you see it. Is Bitcoin stable? Well the current value of a bitcoin has been quite volatile lately in relation to other traditional currencies. But the Bitcoin plan calls for the creation of only 21 million bitcoins. In this way, Bitcoin will try to avoid the pitfalls of modern fiat currencies such as inflation, deflation, market manipulation, monetary policy, quantitative easing, and other central manipulations that effect the day-to-day value of the money we use.

Any cryptocurrency is generated by ‘miners’ on a cryptocurrency network like bitcoin that solves complex mathematical problems. Bitcoin is the name of the oldest and most popular cryptocurrency network as well as the unit of currency generated by the same network. Except the fact that it is virtual and decentralized, bitcoin behaves very much like any real currency you know. Believe it or not, bitcoin, or at least the theory behind it, has been around for a decade. Simply put, bitcoin is a decentralised virtual currency, which means you don’t need a bank, or physical cash, to transact. Like physical currencies, the values of bitcoin, and other virtual currencies, fluctuate daily.
