Gas Chromatography | working principle and instrumentation lecture

26:02
Gas chromatography lecture - This chromatography lecture explains about the instrumentation, principle of gas chromatography. Gas chromatography (GC) is a common type of chromatography used in analytical chemistry for separating and analyzing compounds that can be vaporized without decomposition. Typical uses of GC include testing the purity of a particular substance, or separating the different components of a mixture (the relative amounts of such components can also be determined). In some situations, GC may help in identifying a compound. In preparative chromatography, GC can be used to prepare pure compounds from a mixture. This lecture will explain the principle of gas chromatography and the instrumentation and uses of gas chromatography. In gas chromatography, the mobile phase (or "moving phase") is a carrier gas, usually an inert gas such as helium or an unreactive gas such as nitrogen. Helium remains the most commonly used carrier gas in about 90% of instruments although hydrogen is preferred for improved separations. The stationary phase is a microscopic layer of liquid or polymer on an inert solid support, inside a piece of glass or metal tubing called a column (an homage to the fractionating column used in distillation). The instrument used to perform gas chromatography is called a gas chromatograph (or "aerograph", "gas separator"). Gas chromatography is in principle similar to column chromatography (as well as other forms of chromatography, such as HPLC, TLC), but has several notable differences. First, the process of separating the compounds in a mixture is carried out between a liquid stationary phase and a gas mobile phase, whereas in column chromatography the stationary phase is a solid and the mobile phase is a liquid. (Hence the full name of the procedure is "Gas–liquid chromatography", referring to the mobile and stationary phases, respectively.) Second, the column through which the gas phase passes is located in an oven where the temperature of the gas can be controlled, whereas column chromatography (typically) has no such temperature control. Finally, the concentration of a compound in the gas phase is solely a function of the vapor pressure of the gas. Gas chromatography is also similar to fractional distillation, since both processes separate the components of a mixture primarily based on boiling point (or vapor pressure) differences. Gas chromatography is also sometimes known as vapor-phase chromatography (VPC), or gas–liquid partition chromatography (GLPC). These alternative names, as well as their respective abbreviations, are frequently used in scientific literature. Strictly speaking, GLPC is the most correct terminology, and is thus preferred by many authors. In most modern GC-MS systems, computer software is used to draw and integrate peaks, and match MS spectra to library spectra. Gas Chromatography is used extensively in forensic science. CME Presents: The Death of the Guitar

05:49
The electric guitar, tool of cultural revolution for nearly a century of legends across multiple musical genres, has died. The age of the instrument is undisclosed. After a lengthy and very public demise, the guitar was pronounced dead after multiple allegations from unnamed sources stating its diminishing relevance among popular musicians and the shocking disappearance of guitar icons such as Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Eddie Van Halen from the cultural landscape. Sources also cited a general decline in industry returns as a direct contribution to the icon’s untimely and inevitable demise. While exact origins of the electric guitar remain unconfirmed, the instrument rose to prominence in the late ’30s and early ’40s, meeting the demand for a more audible tool for producing audible guitar performance among larger big bands. It became quickly embraced by the jazz and blues musicians before skyrocketing to notoriety with the help of rock pundits such as Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley. Ever the tool of social disruption and political statement-making, the guitar enjoyed a noticeable creative renaissance in the 1960s with the advent of surf, the British Invasion and psychedelic rock, and again in the late ’70s with the first inklings of punk rock and its later successors such as grunge and indie. The electric guitar is survived by a small contingent of laptop and mobile devices, along with a longstanding assortment of MIDI controllers and tone modeling devices alleging a more efficient and convenient production of electric guitar tones. Emerson Daniel Dual-Configuration Gas Ultrasonic Flow Meters

02:49
With today’s pipelines more likely to be carrying dirty gas, significant measurement errors are becoming increasingly common because the cause of the error is imperceptible by many traditional flow measurement technologies. If not detected quickly, even a small amount of liquid or other contamination in the bottom of a pipe can significantly increase Lost And Unaccounted For (LAUF) product and financial risk. Featuring two meters and transmitters in a single body, these new Emerson Daniel Dual-Configuration Gas Ultrasonic Meters (3415/3416/3417) offer unique path layouts that enable greater visibility into gas quality and device health, as well as continuous on-line verification of custody transfer measurement integrity. The primary meter in each model is a field-proven Daniel four-path, chordal, British Gas design meter, certified to the most stringent OIML R137 1&2 Accuracy Class 0.5. The secondary meter varies by model, offering either reflective path technology or a second set of four chordal paths. Daniel Model 3415 (4+1) and 3416 (4+2) Gas Ultrasonic Meters combine a four-path fiscal meter with an added check meter, while the 3417 (four-path plus four-path) meter provides two fiscal meters for full redundancy and equal accuracy in one meter body. Trending data from two independent transmitters help extend calibration cycles, enabling maintenance to be condition-based instead of calendar-based. With built-in diagnostics, operators can easily track meter performance to baseline to help streamline maintenance and reduce inspection in the field for significant cost savings. Embedded expert knowledge help less experienced technicians interpret diagnostics to resolve problems more rapidly. Maintenance is no longer prescriptive, but condition based.

Pier Vittorio Aureli - Design Without Qualities: Architecture and the Rise of Abstraction - Part 3

01:45:43
Lecture date: 2013-11-13 Architecture Without Quality: The Rise of Urban Decorum and Architecture as Financial Strategy Lecture 3 of 6 Abstraction addresses the process of removal in order to reach the essential datum of things. In a design world increasingly dominated by organic and redundant forms, abstraction is likely to be one of the most unpopular concepts in the field of architectural theory. While it is a mistake to think abstraction opposes the complexities and contradictions of our world, we deny that it is the very outcome of larger historical and cultural forces.  Pier Vittorio Aureli will investigate the issue of abstraction and its relation to architectural form to propose a different interpretation of this historical phenomenon. Paraphrasing Marx, abstraction – in the form of categories such as geometry, measure, modularity and scale – was born out of ‘fire and blood’, and the historical evolution of abstract forms in architecture, such as the rise of modular design, the importance of the plan in architectural design, and the simplification of architectural form, has taken place amid political conflicts and economic turmoil. The seminar will attempt to read issues such as form and design in relation to the history of political economy, revisiting the work of numerous architects along the way, in order to uncover abstraction not as stylistic movement, but as the very essence of the modern project of architecture. The series of lunchtime seminars is open to all. Future Dates (all lectures begin at 1pm in the Lecture Hall) 20 November 27 November 11 December Image: The Chicago Tribune by Ludwig Hilberseimer

Lisa Randall - Extra Dimensional Particle Resonances at the LHC (2/3)

58:44
Professor Lisa Randall, professor of physics at Harvard University, explains some of her theoretical models on extra-dimensional warped spacetime to theoretical and experimental physicists at CERN and how, by using the Large Hadron Collider, physicists may soon be able to probe into higher dimensional resonances of particles, predicted by 5D Kaluza-Klein Theory, and even the Dilaton's which may exist and are predictions of the S-Duals in 11D M-Theory. Stephen Hawking has also made similar claims, while also stating that cosmological studies done on data from the new Planck Satellite mapping the Cosmic Microwave background may also confirm predictions of M-Theory. This Talk will focus on the Kaluza-Klein mode of the Gluon, the particle which exchanges the strong nuclear force (the color force) on a quantum field scale between quarks. For Unification of all 4 fundamental forces, the Standard Model, non-Abelian gauge groups along with the 5D bulk KK-mode Graviton must all exist on the bulk between the branes, If the Fermions and Gauge Bosons do exist on the Bulk in higher dimensional space, with or without warping, along with the KK-mode Graviton then there must be KK-modes of the gauge Bosons themselves, one of which would be the KK-mode of the Gluon which may be the true form of the gluon itself. A lot of people are sceptical of the KK-mode of the Gluon, mainly becuase it is difficult to resolve in a detector, unlike the KK-mode of the Graviton. The Electroweak sector may also have KK-modes of the W and Z Bosons, which would couple strongly with the Top Quarks. Higher energy Top Quarks are the main probes the KK-modes of Standard model forces and particles and this would be true aswell for probing into Supersymmetry. With The discovery of the Higgs Boson, physicists will be able to confirm if Supersymmetry is observable at LHC energies by studying the digamma decay mode for a discrepancy against the current Standard Model. If the cross-section of the 2 gamma rays emitted in a Higgs decay show a large disagreement with standard model results, then there may be Supersymmetric particles interacting with the Higgs. This may be observed when the LHC is at full operational power in 2015. Along with Supersymmetric particles coupling with the Higgs, certain particles predicted by Kaluza-Klein Theory include the scalar field Radion, or Radigraviton, a light particle which couples with the graviton and has the same decay patterns as a Higgs Boson. Moreover, since in the 5D brane rescales the mass scale of particles, giving them mass in the TeV scale, due to momentum being carried in this brane. Gravity in our dimension is a very weak interaction, and has 1/Planck scaled interactions. However in warped dimensions the gravitational interaction is strengthened by 16 orders of magnitude stronger, as the Kaluza-Klein partner to the graviton scales as 1/TeV scaled interactions. Space-Time warping in higher dimensions lowers mass scales for observed particles, pure Standard Model Gravitons would be of huge mass scales, impossible to reach using human technology. However, near the brane, higher dimensional partners of the graviton would carry its momentum in a 5D brane and would have a rescaled, much lower mass. Gravitons could therefore be generated by the LHC at certain, as of yet, unknown energy modes. Several modes may exist and oscillate at higher dimension modes which may lie outside the LHC energies at some point, as it passes the 5D brane outside the bulk space. Hence, if the LHC does have sufficient energy to reach one of the KK-mode graviton modes then it could be possible to detect Quantum Gravity at the LHC. Higher modes may also allow artificial black holes to be condensed out of higher fluxes of KK-mode gravitons. These black holes may only consist of a few, fermionic states of supersymmetric gravitons at the lowest energy state so it would instantly be destroyed by the Hawking Process. This would be a huge leap forward into studying M-Theory. Lisa Randall is an American theoretical physicist and a leading expert on particle physics and cosmology. She works on several of the competing models of string theory in the quest to explain the fabric of the universe.
