The Atmosphere, the Ocean and Environmental Change (GG 140) The various types of resources currently used for energy production are discussed. Energy is primarily used for heating, transportation, and generating electricity. Coal is burned largely to produce electricity and is a major contributor to air pollution with coal power plants emitting carbon dioxides and nitrous oxides. Another major resource used for energy is oil. It is projected that each country either has reached or will reach a peak oil use, after which oil use will decrease. Natural gas is now being obtained from shale using the extraction technique of fracting which is a recent discovery. Nuclear power gained popularity worldwide through the 1970s, however very few new power plants have been built in the last three decades following the Three Mile Island and Chernobyl episodes. The difference between renewable and non-renewable resources can be done on the basis of their usage life, carbon emission, quantity available, maintenance cost, environment friendly nature, land area required for installation and much more. The energy resources which cannot be exhausted and can be used again and again are called renewable energy resources. For example solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy and hydroelectric etc. The energy resources which can be exhausted one day and cannot be used repeatedly are called non-renewable energy resources. The example of non-renewable energy resources are coal, petroleum, natural gases etc. 1. The renewable energy resources can be depleted and used again and again. But the non-renewable resources are limited in number and can be depleted one day. 2. The carbon emission in renewable energy resources are very low and prevent global warming. In non renewable resources the carbon emission is large and contributes in global warming. 3.The renewable resources are cheaper and present in unlimited quantity but the non- renewable resources are costlier and present in limited quantity. 4. The life of renewable resources is infinite. In case of non-renewable resources the life is finite. 5. The maintenance cost for the power plant of renewable energy resources is low but it is high in the case of non-renewable energy resources. 6. Solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy and geothermal energy are called as renewable resources. Coal petroleum, natural gas, are called non-renewable resources. The wait is finally over. Global OTEC Resources has spent the last year developing the company’s innovative concept for using ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) especially for ‘off-grid’ resorts and local islands in the Maldives and Caribbean. The company has reached a cost model for harnessing the thermal energy stored in our oceans which is comparable to, if not cheaper than, the cost of running diesel generators. Global OTEC Resource’s concept will deliver a net capacity of 1-MW of electricity to its customers across the tropics which is enough to fully power most small-to-midsized resorts or islands. The images show an OTEC plant housed on a floating barge which incorporates a deep cold-water pipe into its hull through a 'weathervaning' turret mooring system. The cold-water pipe returns seawater from a depth of 1,000m, achieving the temperature difference with the warm surface water of 20 degrees centigrade. Ammonia is repeatedly evaporated and condensed to power a turbine and produce electricity. The turret and mooring system is designed primarily to allow the unit to align itself with incident weather conditions in order to withstand large wave heights and wind speeds, which is critical for many locations across the tropics. The company decided to focus its design on the needs of Small Island Developing States (SIDS) after learning that many small islands consume over 10,000 litres of diesel a day. This generates a significant carbon footprint in locations that many would consider ‘idyllic’ locations for dream holidays. Managing Director Dan Grech says: “Many meetings with both private and public sector representatives in our target markets have indicated that currently, renewables aren't presenting a viable proposition for islands to cut their dependence on fossil fuels. Thousands of islands lack the space for large solar and battery installations to provide their basic daily electricity loads and feel ‘stuck’ with diesel generators despite the threat climate change presents to their livelihoods.” “Our next stage is to advance the detail of this design to be ready for fabrication. In recent years, the scarcity and the increasing prices of non-renewable resources have begun to attract widespread attention from both academics and policy makers. Fossil energy sources such as coal and oil and their price increase on global markets caused mining and production of such non-renewable resources to grow substantially. Coal's share of global energy consumption reached its highest level since 1970, mainly due to increased consumption in China. A similar trend can be observed for oil. In this paper, empirical facts on coal and oil production and price trends are presented. The reserves of such exhaustible resources are finite. Total stock of non-renewable resources consists of known resources and unknown resources. A further discovery of unknown resources will increase the stock of known resources, which can be exploited optimally. We consider an optimal strategy of extraction and production of non-renewable resources. A theoretical model with two state variables—the known stock of the resources and the cumulative past extraction—and one decision variable—the optimal extraction rate—is presented. A monopolistic resource owner maximizes inter-temporal profits from exploiting the non-renewable resources. The price of the resource depends on the extraction rate, part of the discovered stock of resource and accumulated past extraction. The model is numerically solved by using a nonlinear model predictive control, which considers an optimal control problem subject to constraints. We explore the path of the optimal extraction rate and the corresponding price when the initial stock of the known resources is could be characterized by different initial conditions. As in the empirical work by Greiner et al. (2011), our numerical solution method shows an empirically observed pattern of a U-shaped path for the price and an inverted U-shaped path for the extraction rate if the stock of the initially known resources is not too large. It might seem surprising, but algae is one of the most powerful sources of energy we have access to on Earth. When dried algae is ground into a powder and refined, oil can be extracted from it. The result is nearly identical to traditional gasoline, but with far more benefits. Dave Hazlebeck, CEO of Global Algae Innovations, gave Seeker a tour of his algae farm in Kauai, Hawaii, and explained how his company is revolutionizing sustainable energy. "The fuel that we're producing is exactly the same in terms of performance as gasoline or diesel or jet, it's just a lot cleaner. I think the big difference is that [with] all the other biofuels, you're growing it and you're just getting biofuel. In this case, for every gallon of biofuel you get 10 pounds of food with it," Hazlebeck said. Hazlebeck believes his company is on the path to completely change the way we currently produce both oil and food. Not only can algae create biofuel, it can also be used to create animal feed. Currently, most animal and fish feed is made from corn or soy, which both use more water and energy to grow than algae. "There's studies that show with algae grown to replace animal feed, you could actually solve global warming to a large extent," Hazlebeck told Seeker. Algae can be used to create food for humans as well. New Wave Foods in Northern California created fake shrimp made from algae and other plants that actually looks, smells and even tastes like real shrimp. Because it's made from algae, the shrimp substitute also has the added benefit of being low in fat and extremely rich in nutrients, something that corn and soy are severely lacking. Growing algae for oil and food could also significantly reduce deforestation. According to Scientific American, the yields from algae are far more significant than crops like corn or soy. If all the fuel in the country was replaced with biofuel from corn, we would need a facility three times the size of the continental U.S. to produce it. But for algae, we would need a facility the size of Maryland. Additionally, algae can produce 40 times more food per acre than traditional crops. While showing the Seeker team around GAI's Hawaii facility, Hazlebeck explained that the algae farm is next to a power plant, which puts it in a very unique position. "[It] allows us to capture carbon dioxide and avoid that discharge and reuse it, and that prevents it from going into the atmosphere and causing global warming," he said. "If every power plant had an algae farm next to it, it could potentially solve the global warming issue entirely." The environmental benefits of algae are impressive, and because algae can grow in both freshwater and seawater, it's also very easy to produce. So, does that mean we'll all be filling our cars with algae gas at the pumps very soon? Not just yet. Hazlebeck and his team have run into a few setbacks since they began scaling up their operations. The most prohibitive issue has been the cost. When Global Algae Innovations began, a gallon of oil produced from algae was about $30 a gallon -- 10 times higher than it needs to be to work as a viable alternative to fossil fuel. But Hazlebeck and his team didn't give up, and they've continued to come up with solutions to decrease the cost. As of now, they almost have algae oil down to only $2 - $3 a gallon. Once GAI can get their algae production up to scale, Hazlebeck believes it will change the geopolitics of the world. "A lot of the reasons we have wars are because of fights over resources or the need for more resources. By creating a more equitable distribution with countries being able to make their own, it should lead to a more stable and peaceful world," he told Seeker. That's really the point of it all for Hazlebeck and GAI. They don't want to be the only company doing this; they want everyone working together because they truly believe using algae as a fuel and food source will change the world. Script: Fossil fuels are non-renewable energy resources; these are coal, oil and natural gas. They were formed from the remains of living organisms millions of years ago and they release heat energy when they are burned. This heat is used to turn water into steam, which is used to turn a turbine, which then drives a generator to generate electricity. There are downsides however, fossil fuels release sulphur dioxide and carbon dioxide which lead to acid rain and an increase in global warming. Another form of non-renewable energy is Nuclear. The main nuclear fuels are uranium and plutonium. The nuclei of these large atoms are split in a process called nuclear fission to release a great deal of heat. The heat energy is again used to boil water. The kinetic energy in the expanding steam spins turbines, which then drive generators to produce electricity. Unlike fossil fuels, nuclear fuels do not produce carbon or sulphur dioxide. However, they do have the risk of a fault where large amounts of radioactive material could be released into the environment such as the disaster of Chernobyl in 1986.
