How Does Exchange ActiveSync Work? Like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup.

02:52
How does Exchange ActiveSync (EAS) work? It’s a combination of both a transport protocol and a device management protocol – but Paul Robichaux, Exchange Server MVP, would say think of it like a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Watch this short video to understand how EAS works behind the scenes and how the auto-discover protocol, complementary to EAS, is integral to the process. This video is part of a series of videos discussing EAS topics with Paul Robichaux. As users go mobile, a wave of new challenges arise for Exchange and mobile admins. EAS is widely used for synchronizing mobile device calendars, contacts and email, but its many moving parts create a plethora of problems. Understanding these problems and challenges will help you mitigate their impact on mobile performance for end-users.

Autodiscover service automatically configures user profile settings for clients running Microsoft Office Outlook 2007 or Outlook 2010, as well as supported mobile phones. The Client Access server role is one of five server roles in Microsoft Exchange Server 2010. The Client Access server role accepts connections to your Exchange 2010 server from different clients. Software clients such as Microsoft Outlook Express and Eudora use POP3 or IMAP4 connections to communicate with the Exchange server. Hardware clients, such as mobile phones, use ActiveSync, POP3, or IMAP4 to communicate with the Exchange server. You must install the Client Access server role in every Exchange organization and every Active Directory site that has the Mailbox server role installed. The Client Access server role also provides access to free/busy data by using the Availability service and enables certain clients to download automatic configuration settings from the Autodiscover service.
