Investment Banking: Industry Overview and Careers in Investment Banking

05:50
Investment banks are notorious for their highly competitive working environment and long working hours for junior employees. Nevertheless, they continue to be seen as one of the prime destinations for talented Business and Finance graduates, given the excitement of working on large deals and the high pay scale that comes with this job. Investment banking operations tend to be more sophisticated than traditional “deposit taking, credit giving” retail banking services. Investment banks work closely with corporate clients, pension funds, financial sponsors and governments to structure and execute some of the largest transactions that we see in the news. Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. Special thanks to Dave Hunt for permission to use his PiPhone video. this guy really did make an artisanal smartphone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eaiNsFhtI8 Crash Course is on Patreon! We always have to keep in mind that a Documentary, after all, can tell lies and it can tell lies because it lays claim to a form of veracity which fiction doesn't. Some of the documentaries are made just to discredit some particular person, party, organization, system etc, but most of them here on TDF are non biased, without prejudice and worth watching.
How FinTech is Shaping the Future of Banking | Henri Arslanian | TEDxWanChai

14:02
While FinTech is revolutionizing the banking industry and giving millions of people access to financial services for the first time, new banking models are emerging with FinTech start-ups and tech firms potentially disrupting the status quo. But business schools and universities are not preparing future bankers for these changes, says FinTech thought leader Henri Arslanian. How can designers, programmers and creative thinkers help? Henri Arslanian started his career as a financial markets and funds lawyer in Canada and Hong Kong, after which he spent many years with UBS Investment Bank in Hong Kong. In recent years, he has been teaching graduate courses on Entrepreneurship in Finance at Hong Kong University as an Adjunct Associate Professor, and currently leads the first FinTech course in Asia. His latest book on Entrepreneurship in Finance will be published in late 2016 by Palgrave Macmillan. A member of the Milken Institute’s Young Leaders Circle, Henri is a regular keynote speaker globally on the topic of FinTech and hedge funds and currently sits on a number of finance, academic, civil society and FinTech related boards and advisory boards. Henri is fluent in English, French, Armenian, Spanish and conversational in Mandarin Chinese and has been awarded many academic and industry awards over the years, including the Governor General of Canada Gold Medal for Academic Excellence. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

19. Investment Banks

01:11:19
Financial Markets (2011) (ECON 252) Professor Shiller characterizes investment banking by contrasting it to consulting, commercial banking, and securities trading. Then, in order to see the essence of investment banking, he reviews some of the principles that John Whitehead, the former chairman of Goldman Sachs, has formulated. These principles are the basis for a discussion of the substantial power that investment bankers have, and their role in society. Government regulation of these powerful investment banks has been a thorny issue for many years, and especially so now since they played a significant role in world financial crisis of the 2000s. 00:00 - Chapter 1. While it is quite easy to imagine what commercial banking is (deposits, loans, payment system), few people outside the financial sector know what happens inside an investment bank (see also http://www.finance-watch.org/hot-topics/understanding-finance/920-understanding-finance-1) Aline Fares, who worked for quite a while in the banking sector before joining Finance Watch, made a tour into the world of investment banking and answered questions from participants in this webinar. Top Jobs in Finance Explained: Investment Banking, Accounting and Private Equity

06:57
Interested in getting a career in Finance? Not sure what part of Finance you want to work in? This video explains the different types of jobs you can get in Finance. Whether you want to be an Investment Banker, Financial Analyst, Accountant or a Finance Manager. I will walk you through all the options here. · Investment banking · Private Equity · Investment Managers (Buy Side Financial Analysts) – Banks, insurance companies, Hedge funds. · Corporate Finance · Accountant – Responsible for reporting financial results. Public accountants usually work for the "Big 4" accounting firms or other firms structured similarly. The first Financial Analyst role that I’d like to teach you exists within Investment Banks and is the analyst job that supports Investment Bankers. Within the industry it is commonly known as the Investment Banking Analyst. In this job you would be responsible for completing all the research required to analyze your assigned deal. An investment bank’s role is to help a company raise money by issuing an IPO(Initial Public Offering) or a subsequent sale of securities and stock. M&A Analyst Investment Banking is similar to Mergers and Acquisitions, which is why Investment Banks perform a lot of M&A activity. The analysts value both companies separately as well as together. Before that can be done, you will have to help your client find a suitable company to merge with. Investment Management The investment industry is another area that uses the Financial Analyst title. Analysts assist the Investment Manager with ensuring money is invested to maximize return and minimize risk. The teams managing these investments may work for the company who owns the investments or they may be a separate company managing the investments of numerous companies. In the former relationship, these individuals would work for a bank, insurance company or a trust. The Investment Manager’s job is vital to the success of the company so earning the maximum amount of return on investment is crucial. The Financial Analysts who work here are expected to know portfolio analysis very well and will need to obtain the CFA Charter. Some more specific names for these positions are Investment Analyst, Fund Analyst, or Portfolio Analyst. Financial Planning & Analysis There are a handful of finance jobs that exist within all medium to large corporations. The FP&A (financial planning and analysis) is one such role. This area is the core of the finance department and performs most of the analysis for the company. One of the functions of FP&A is to provide reporting to management on the performance of the company. This reporting includes analysis of growth rates, trends, and other relevant analysis. Private Wealth Management A Private Wealth Management professional works with high net worth individuals to assist them with protecting or increasing their wealth through diversification of financial assets. Their main role is managing the relationship between the financial institution and the client while serving the needs of the client. They will suggest specific funds or risk reduction strategies to help the client protect and grow their money. Some job titles you will see for these roles are Private Wealth Manager, Private Wealth Analyst, or Wealth Management Analyst Credit Analyst Credit analysts are not really covered here in this video, but they are responsible for evaluating the risk of a company to determine their creditworthiness. This is relevant for evaluating whether or not to give a company a loan and the structure and terms of that loan. The method used to determine the company’s risk is typically through the analysis of their financial statements. Buy-Side / Sell-Side Analyst A Buy-Side Financial Analyst is evaluating a company to determine if their stock is good to invest in and make part of their investment portfolio. A Sell-Side Financial Analyst has the responsibility of evaluating a company and making a recommendation to the Buy-Side Analysts to either buy or don’t buy. The main difference between the two jobs is that the Sell-Side Analyst has to do a very thorough analysis of the company. The Buy-Side Analyst uses this analysis to make their stock purchase decision. For more information, visit Careerintellect.com. You have to learn the art of financial management to have a financially secure future ahead. You should plan your retirement, kids education, household expenses, financial planning is the key to create wealth. Your answer to "how to make more money?" is saving and investment. Learn and apply from this motivational advice. Here is the summary of 8 habits, Habit #8 No Credit Credit is simply a rattrap hidden behind a bed of roses. Most of us, at some or the other point in our life, have fallen into the trap of taking credit to fulfill our monetary needs. From family members to friends, from colleagues to vendors that we closely work with, credit is a monetary tool which must be used only when it is absolutely necessary and not otherwise. Most of us instantly choose to use the instrument of credit failing to realize that we might not be in a position to repay it on time. Habit #7 Maintain your Accounts While it may seem like a cumbersome job at first, but maintaining your accounts is the wisest way to get hold of your finances and monitor them closely. Often we end up spending more than we save and push ourselves in a situation of monetary imbalance. The sole reason as to why we end up in this situation is because of our lack of accounting. When you maintain an account of your incomes and expenses, you will not only become watchful of what you spend but you will also be amazed at the wonders it does in terms of saving. Habit #6 Leave Bad Habits A wise person has rightly said, no one can harm us more than we can harm ourselves. Imagine spending a sum of Rs. 50 every day, this daily expenditure which seems like a petty amount totals up to Rs. 1500 every month. This is the approximate amount that person spends on injurious habits like smoking, alcohol or taking drugs. If you choose to give up a bad habit, it will not only be easy on your pocket but it will also help you in maintaining your health and increasing your life’s longevity. Habit #5 Records Apart from maintaining accounts, there is one more significant step that every person must necessarily follow for financial independence. This step is the maintenance of records. By records, we mean the different legal and formal documents of importance that every citizen of India is bound to maintain by law. Habit #4 Save and Invest Investing is an art that every person needs to know in order to be financially stable in life. Savings on the other hand form the base of investments. In order to invest, it is but obvious that you need to start saving a part of what you earn. Investing in the right practices will help you gain beneficial returns in the long term. If you begin investing early, you will have ample savings for yourself and your family, years down the line. Habit #3 Buy in bulk Why spend more on things that we already know we will keep on needing? The habit of buying in bulk is particularly useful when it comes to purchasing necessities. Why pay the full price for a bag of rice when you know that you will need it again for the next month? In situations like these, concept of bulk buying comes into play. Quantities of Purchase and Price have an inverse relationship. #2 Save your health We spend a major chunk of our lives trying to earn as much as we can without giving any due importance to our physical and mental health. It is imperative to understand the simple fact that we will be able to fulfill our financial dreams only when we pay due attention to our health and wellness. #1 Never Stop Learning The biggest multimillionaires in the world are the ones who never stop learning. If you want to become someone like Warren Buffet or Bill Gates, you need to keep adapting to changes and learn to be dynamic, just like they are. Excel Shortcuts Investment Banking: Quick Tips

10:11
You’ll get a quick, but very powerful, tip on how to optimize your Excel setup with the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) and custom shortcuts in this tutorial. These tips will save you a ton of time when creating valuations, organizing data, and doing any formatting exercise. http://breakingintowallstreet.com/ "Financial Modeling Training And Career Resources For Aspiring Investment Bankers" Shortcuts Introduced: These are all BUILT-IN shortcuts: Alt, T, O: Options Menu Alt, H, FC: Font Color Alt, H, FS: Font Size Alt, H, H: Fill Color Alt, H, A, C: Center Alt, H, B: Borders Alt, H, O, I: AutoFit Column Width Alt, H, O, W: Column Width Alt, H, 0: Increase Decimal Places Alt, H, 9: Decrease Decimal Places These are the NEW shortcuts you can create via the Quick Access Toolbar: Alt, 1: Font Color Alt, 2: Font Size Alt, 3: Fill Color Alt, 4: Center Alt, 5: Borders Alt, 6: AutoFit Column Width Alt, 7: Column Width Alt, 8: Increase Decimal Places Alt, 9: Decrease Decimal Places Lesson Outline: Many Excel shortcuts that you use repeatedly when creating valuations, models and when formatting data are cumbersome to enter. Something as simple as changing the font color takes 4 keystrokes – Alt, H, F, C – if you use the built-in method for it. Other common commands such as alignment, fill colors, borders, and column widths also take 3-4 keystrokes. A more efficient alternative is to set up the Quick Access Toolbar (QAT) so that you can access the most common commands with shortcuts like Alt, 1 instead. You can either import our file (see the link below under RESOURCES) or go to the Options menu (Alt, T, O) and then the Quick Access Toolbar tab, and create the menu yourself. We recommend setting “Font Color” in position #1, followed by Font Size, Fill Color, Center, Borders, AutoFit Column Width, Column Width, and Increase and Decrease Decimal places. These are some of the most frequently used commands in Excel, and you’ll save a ton of time with the new, shorter versions. A command like AutoFit Column Width that used to take 4 keystrokes now takes only 2 (Alt, 6) with this approach. You might realize 30-40% time savings when working in Excel if you use this full set of shortcuts. They’re especially useful for formatting and analyzing data and doing the initial setup in financial models. Philosophy of High Finance: Investment & Merchant Banking - Siegmund Warburg (2010)

54:24
Sir Siegmund George Warburg (30 September 1902 -- 22 October 1982) was a German-born English banker. He was a member of the prominent Warburg family. He played a prominent role in the development of merchant banking. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0143119400/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=0143119400&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=8eafa2f4e4e51085cfda44a58b5a9e55 He was born in the village of Seeburg, Germany (today part of Bad Urach), the only child of Georges Siegmund Warburg and Lucie. Georges Siegmund Warburg and Lucie raised a young Siegmund Warburg on an estate (Uhenfels Castle) in Swabia in South West Germany far away from the main branch of the family, which operated the second largest bank in Hamburg, up north. Siegmund had a sincere and deep affection for his mother who taught him to have a critical and inquisitive mind. In the period immediately before the Second World War he worked under cover for the Z Organisation, a highly secret offshoot of MI6/SIS, and reported impressively from Switzerland on his regular meetings with Hjalmar Schacht, then the president of the Nazi German Reichsbank and thus the most powerful German banker. He was forced to flee the National Socialist regime of Adolf Hitler and moved to the United Kingdom in 1934 where he co-founded S. G. Warburg & Co. in 1946 with Henry Grunfeld. In the United Kingdom, Siegmund was considered an 'upstart' to the establishment in the City of London. His most famous achievement was the establishment of the EuroBond market. He firmly believed that financial integration of Europe was an essential and natural step in the development of the European economy. The firm that he created with Grunfeld, S.G. Warburg & Co., was a major British investment bank (merchant bank at the time), and Siegmund was the bank's managing director until the 1970s - when although he officially had retired and was living in Switzerland, still retained a personal secretary to draft correspondence and assist with the operations of the firm. Control of the firm S.G. Warburg and Co. was retained through a family controlled holding company called 'Mercury Securities', where stock was allocated to S.G. Warburg & Co. partners as well as his Swedish wife and children. The firm S.G. Warburg & Co. was acquired by UBS AG creating UBS Warburg, which then after a rebranding exercise was dropped, leaving only UBS AG. He was also simultaneously a partner in the U.S. investment bank Kuhn, Loeb from 1953 until 1964 through a holding company to avoid the restrictions of the Glass--Steagall Act. He died in London in 1982. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Siegmund_Warburg The Warburg family is a prominent family and financial dynasty of German Jewish descent, noted for their varied accomplishments in investment banking, physics, classical music, art history, pharmacology, physiology, finance, private equity and philanthropy. They originated as the Venetian Jewish del Banco family, one of the wealthiest Venetian families in the early 1500s. Following restrictions imposed on banking and the Jewish community, they fled to Bologna, and thence to Warburg, in Germany, in the 16th century, after which they took their name. The family re-established itself in Altona, near Hamburg in the 17th century, and it was there that M. M. Warburg & Co. was established in 1798, among the oldest still existing investment banks in the world. Other banks created by members of the family include: M.M.Warburg & Co., Warburg Pincus, S. G. Warburg & Co. (becoming UBS Warburg). The family is traditionally divided into two prominent lines, the Alsterufer Warburgs and the Mittelweg Warburgs. The Alsterufer Warburgs descended from Siegmund Warburg (1835--1889) and the Mittelweg Warburgs descended from his brother Moritz M. Warburg (1838--1910). They took their nicknames from the brothers' respective addresses in Hamburg. The brothers were grandsons of Moses Marcus Warburg. Siegmund George Warburg was of the Alsterufer line; the five brothers Abraham (Aby) M., Max M., Paul M., Felix M. and Fritz Moritz Warburg were of the Mittelweg line. The brothers Moses Marcus Warburg (1763--1830) and Gerson Warburg (1765--1826) founded the M. M. Warburg & Co. banking company in 1798. Moses Warburg's great-great grandson, Siegmund George Warburg, founded the investment bank S. G. Warburg & Co in London in 1946. Siegmund's second cousin, Eric Warburg, founded Warburg Pincus in New York in 1938. Eric Warburg's son Max Warburg (not to be confused with Eric's father Max Warburg) is currently one of the three partners of M.M.Warburg & Co., Warburg. Max Warburg's elder brother Aby Warburg used his money to establish the Kulturwissenschaftliche Bibliothek Warburg in Hamburg, since 1934 The Warburg Institute in London. Paul Warburg is most famous an advocate of the US Federal Reserve System, established in 1913. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warburg_family
