Determining the structural properties of a truss or beam framework is part of many introductory mechanics courses for civil mechanical engineers. Apart from analytical schemes or graphical methods such as the Cremona plan, displacements and member forces can be calculated using the direct stiffness method. This technique, which is the basis for all considerations within that episode, is a classic first step to explore the Finite Element Method (FEM). Starting from an analogy between a truss framework and a FSAE steel tube frame, Christoph explains the basics of the direct stiffness method using an introductory example of a 3-truss framework. He also introduces you to the MATLAB File Exchange where users have contributed various implementations of the direct stiffness method. In this video I develop the local and global stiffness matrix for a 2 dimensional system. ITS SIMPLE!! STEP 1 Label all the nodal displacements with the appropriate annotation in order. STEP 2 Write out the local stiffness matrix formula STEP 3 Evaluate the sin and cosine of the given angles at each node and start constructing the associated local stiffness matrix STEP 4 Depending on how many members you have, construct the global stiffness matrix by adding the corresponding components that "overlap" with each local stiffness matrix into the global stiffness matrix. In this case we only had one member and, as such, the local stiffness matrix = the global stiffness matrix. In this video, I am briefly showing a demo of a code I have developed in order to run ABAQUS simulations within MATLAB environment using my Graphical User Interface (GUI), which makes it much easier to redo multiple tasks or automation of a parametric study. So, basically, I am using ABAQUS scripting from command environment... I used this code, with some modification to go through the options automatically and, after some post-processing, to see which of the selected constitutive equations would be more suitable to predict AA5182-O flow behaviour. The manuscript prepared using this approach is published in journal of Materials and Design, 2016, Vol. 94, pages 262-273. It is noteworthy that constants of phenomenological constitutive equations were calculated/optimized by genetic algorithm and linear regression analysis elsewhere. Also, concept and methodology to design, train and validation of the neural networks used is not discussed here but can be found and studied from the manuscript... Hopefully, I will try to find time to make another video about those!
