What Is Crew Resource Management?
Crew resource management involves empowering all staff, including ancillary personnel such as nurses and medical assistants, to speak up and voice concerns if a patient's safety is compromised. With crew resource management, residents and other more junior staff members learn to become comfortable questioning decisions made by physician leaders. Physician leaders, in turn, learn to respond to those questions in a respectful manner. The five steps of effective crew resource management are: 1. Asking for relevant information. 2. Offering relevant information. 3. Developing a shared mental model. 4. Advocating for patient safety. 5. Resolving conflicts constructively. Dr. Susan Mann, clinical assistant professor at Harvard University, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts, was a featured speaker at The Doctors Company's OB Advisory Board Meeting. Virtually all but the smallest local governments and special districts in the country now have a separate human resource management group with specialists to help manage a variety of complex functions. In this course, we will briefly describe the nature of human resource management in public administration and introduce you to the topics typically associated with the field. Human Resource Management comprise the formal systems designed to manage people in an organization. Providing legal protection and process for public employees remains a vital function of public HR practitioners. We do not want public employees unduly interfered with or harmed for performing important and lawful public services. And, the public sector is obligated to respect the rights of all persons, and this includes employees. An extensive variety of rules govern the treatment of public employees, and many derive from employment status. Employment status refers to the legal nature of the employment relationship in a governmental entity. A variety of employment systems are associated with each type of legal status. The wide range of legal standards and regulations affecting employees present a formidable challenge to HRM officials. They must balance them with the managerial needs of their agencies and educate managers in the best practices that they engender. This is difficult to achieve, in part because the case law of the courts changes fairly rapidly and the evolving standards are often difficult to understand and apply with confidence.

Dana Tschannen, PhD, RN, Clinical Associate Professor at the School of Nursing, teaches us about Crew Resource Management (CRM), a training method which focuses on the reduction of human error and risk. It's one training method that has been instrumental in supporting aviation's excellent safety record and has unique characteristics that have shown promise in reducing communication failure in healthcare. Concepts in the CRM program include leadership/followership, situational awareness, assertive communication strategies, human factors issues, and checklists.
