Veteran mining research commentator Dr RE (Robbie) Robinson, the one-time National Institute for Metallurgy, now Mintek, director and serial commentator in the Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), makes the call in the attached Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly Online video interview.

Formation and effect of topologically close-packed phases in nickel-base superalloys

A lecture given by Alison Wilson of the University of Cambridge, Materials Science and Metallurgy, for the 2016 Literature Review Prize of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (London). The formation of topologically close-packed (TCP) phases in nickel-base superalloys is an issue of increasing importance as alloys are designed with higher refractory element contents to meet the requirements of next generation turbine engines. This review considers the factors that affect an alloy’s susceptibility to TCP formation. In particular, the debate surrounding the effect of certain individual elements, such as Co and Re, in promoting or suppressing TCP formation is examined alongside the various mechanisms that have been proposed to account for this behaviour. In addition, the detrimental effects of these phases on the alloy’s mechanical properties are discussed, including crack initiation at precipitates, depletion of solid solution strengthening refractory elements and the effect on γ/γ′ rafting behaviour. The Materials Literature Review Prize of IOM3 aims to encourage the preparation of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree in the materials field, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. The prize is administered by the Editorial Board of MST (the journal Materials Science and Technology). Open to any postgraduate student studying in the UK or internationally, the prize carries a cash award, in line with other IOM3 prizes for papers. A winning entry and two runner-up prizes are awarded each year, and all entries are considered for publication in the journal subject to acceptance following peer-review. Congratulations to Ilija Rašovic from the University of Oxford, UK, who won the 2016 prize with his review Water-soluble fullerenes for medical applications. Ilija commented, ‘My research in materials science is a bit left-field… what I have tried to propose with my literature review is the multiple benefits that fullerenes have in medical applications. There are plenty that have been shown to be useful and better than what is currently available in clinic. A lecture given by Harry Bhadeshia at the University of Birmingham, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy. Long before machine learning and artificial intelligence became throwaway terms and on occasions seen as threats to our very existence, there were useful attempts to take advantage of what are essentially mathematical methods to deal with complex problems in science. In the context of materials science, the first paper seems to have been published in 1991 [1]. Professor Harry Bhadeshia's own interest was stimulated in 1992, when he did not understand a presentation made at a conference, and followed this up on returning to Cambridge, where he discovered David MacKay (a leader in information theory), then in the Physics Department. They started working together and published the first paper in 1995 [2]. The method turned out to be so powerful that they published 14 papers together in unfunded research over a period of 24 years. In his lecture, Professor Sir Harry Bhadeshia will deal explicitly with the following: (a) A simple and transparent explanation of the method. (b) Question whether there is any intelligence involved. (c) Show how the technique has led to remarkable PREDICTIONS that have been subsequently been verified experimentally. (d) Describe the best way of disseminating the outcomes. [1] Ghaboussi, J., J. A lecture given by Miles Stopher of the University of Cambridge, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, for the 2016 Literature Review Prize of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (London). The effects of neutron radiation on nickel-based alloys in thermal reactors are defying predictions that were made based upon accelerated testing in fast reactors. As nickel-based alloy components face significant doses in aging thermal reactors and their role in Gen-IV reactor designs becomes prominent, the literature on the effects of radiation on such alloys must be reviewed to enable better structural integrity assessments for relevant components and optimise alloys with respect to irradiation embrittlement resistance. This paper reviews the available data on the effects of radiation, notably neutron radiation, on nickel-based alloys and discusses the possible mitigation strategies and design opportunities for radiation embrittlement-resistant alloys based on recent developments in alloy computational design. The Materials Literature Review Prize of IOM3 aims to encourage the preparation of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree in the materials field, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. The prize is administered by the Editorial Board of MST (the journal Materials Science and Technology). Open to any postgraduate student studying in the UK or internationally, the prize carries a cash award, in line with other IOM3 prizes for papers. This year, we are celebrating the anniversary of a truly historic event. Seventy years ago – on April 13, 1947 – the governments of the USSR and India announced their decision to establish official missions in Delhi and Moscow. This step on our part logically followed up on our course for assisting India on its way to national liberation and contributed to strengthening its independence. In the decades that have followed, our bilateral partnership has further intensified and strengthened, and has never been subject to expediency. Equal and mutually beneficial relations of the two States have steadily developed. This is quite natural. Our peoples have always had mutual sympathy and respect for each other’s spiritual values and culture. Today, we can take pride in what we have achieved. With Russia’s technical and financial assistance, the pioneers of Indian industrialization came into existence: metallurgical complexes in Bhilai, Visakhapatnam and Bokaro, the mining equipment plant in Durgapur, the thermal power station in Neyveli, the electromechanical enterprise in Korba, antibiotics plants in Rishikesh and the pharmaceutical plant in Hyderabad. Soviet and, later on, Russian scientists and academics participated in the establishment of research and education centers in India. These include the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, research institutes of petroleum industry in Dehradun and Ahmedabad. We are proud our specialists helped develop India’s space program. Thanks to this fruitful bilateral cooperation, in 1975 India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, was launched, and Indian citizen Rakesh Sharma travelled into space in 1984 as a crew member of Soyuz T-11. In August 1971, our countries signed the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation, which set forth the fundamental principles of bilateral relations, such as respect for the sovereignty and each other’s interests, good neighborliness, and peaceful coexistence. In 1993, the Russian Federation and the Republic of India confirmed the inviolability of these basic principles in the new Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation. The Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed in 2000 provides for close coordination of approaches to ensuring international peace and security and resolving pressing global and regional issues. Annual summits have become an established practice in the Indian-Russian bilateral relations allowing us to discuss in a timely manner the efforts taken to accomplish our objectives and set long-term goals. In early June, we will have another summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in St. Petersburg. He is expected to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, in which India will for the first time participate as a partner country. Chemistry of Essential Oils with Dr David Stewart on TruthBrigade Radio http://truthbrigade.org/smf/index.php/topic,5834.0.html Dr. David Stewart studied theology, philosophy, and English at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri (1955-58) and studied chemistry, biology and social sciences at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg (1962-63). He also trained as a commercial photography at Los Angeles Trade Technical College (1959-60). He completed a BS degree in Mathematics and Physics at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1965 and was salutatorian of his graduating class. His MS and PhD degrees are in geophysics (theoretical seismology) and were earned from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1969 and 1971 respectively. His doctoral dissertation is a mathematical discourse on vibrational modes and spectral analysis of frequencies in solid matter applying the 3-dimensional tensor calculus developed by Albert Einstein. He spent a semester in medical school at the University of North Carolina (1973) and has been a Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) with the American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth (AAHCC) since 1975. He has spent some 200 hours in training with Dr. Gary Young (ND), internationally recognized authority on aromatherapy, essential oil production, and the originator of Raindrop Therapy. Dr. Stewart has also been a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) with the nationally recognized Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC), which is endorsed by the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists (NAHA), of which he is a member. Besides his Ph.D., Dr. Stewart is also a Doctor of Natural Medicine (D.N.M.) recognized and awarded by the World Organization of Natural Medicine Practitioners (WONMP). He has held positions as a hydraulic engineer and hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Southern California (1965-67). He was a professor on the faculty of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, (1971-1978) and also held a professorship at Southeast Missouri State University (1988-1993). He was also a part-time United Methodist Pastor (1993-94, 1997-99) in rural Missouri. He has been the Executive Director of the InterNational Association of Parents and Professionals for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth (NAPSAC International) since its founding in 1975. For most of his professional career, Dr. Stewart has been self-employed as an author and lecturer, mainly in the area of alternative health care. He has also served on advisory committees to the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). He has testified as an expert on health matters before state legislative committees, U.S. Congressional committees, medical licensing boards and courts of law throughout the U.S. as well as in Canada. He has authored or coauthored over 300 published works including sixteen books. Two of his books won the "Books of the Year" Award from the American Journal of Nursing. One of his flyers on breastfeeding (published by La Leche League International, LLLI) sold over two million copies in ten languages. He has given many seminars on various aspects of aromatherapy throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as Australia, Austria, Great Britain, and Japan. He has also made presentations in Lima, Peru, on behalf of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and in Bogota, Colombia, on behalf of the United Nations Disaster Relief Organization (UNDRO). He has been quoted in newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S., has made numerous radio interviews, and has appeared on television in 44 countries. With his wife, Lee, he gave a four-day seminar on essential oils and their applications in Polish (with translators) in Chicago. He is a former member of the faculty of the Institute for Energy-Wellness Studies (IEWS) in Toronto, Canada, where he taught courses on the Chemistry and Science of Essential Oils. He has also been appointed to the faculty of the Metropolitan University of Quayaquil, Ecuador, where he will teach courses in Chemistry and the Botany of oil-bearing plants. Diran Apelian is the Alcoa-Howmet Professor of Engineering and Founding Director of the Metal Processing Institute (MPI) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He received his B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering from Drexel University in 1968 and his doctorate in materials science and engineering from MIT in 1972. He worked at Bethlehem Steel’s Homer Research Laboratories before joining Drexel University’s faculty in 1976. At Drexel he held various positions, including professor, head of the Department of Materials Engineering, associate dean of the College of Engineering and vice-provost of the University. He joined WPI in July 1990 as WPI’s Provost. In 1996 he returned to the faculty and leads the activities of the Metal Processing Institute. He is credited with pioneering work in various areas of solidification processing and powder metallurgy – specifically in molten metal processing, aluminum alloy development, plasma deposition, spray casting/forming, and semi-solid processing of metals. During the last decade, he has worked on sustainable development issues, and particularly, resource recovery, reuse, and recycling. Apelian is the recipient of many distinguished honors and awards – national and international; he has over 600 publications to his credit; and serves on several technical, corporate and editorial boards. During 2008/2009, he served as President of TMS.
