A lecture given by Alison Wilson of the University of Cambridge, Materials Science and Metallurgy, for the 2016 Literature Review Prize of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (London). The formation of topologically close-packed (TCP) phases in nickel-base superalloys is an issue of increasing importance as alloys are designed with higher refractory element contents to meet the requirements of next generation turbine engines. This review considers the factors that affect an alloy’s susceptibility to TCP formation. In particular, the debate surrounding the effect of certain individual elements, such as Co and Re, in promoting or suppressing TCP formation is examined alongside the various mechanisms that have been proposed to account for this behaviour. In addition, the detrimental effects of these phases on the alloy’s mechanical properties are discussed, including crack initiation at precipitates, depletion of solid solution strengthening refractory elements and the effect on γ/γ′ rafting behaviour. The Materials Literature Review Prize of IOM3 aims to encourage the preparation of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree in the materials field, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. The prize is administered by the Editorial Board of MST (the journal Materials Science and Technology). Open to any postgraduate student studying in the UK or internationally, the prize carries a cash award, in line with other IOM3 prizes for papers. A winning entry and two runner-up prizes are awarded each year, and all entries are considered for publication in the journal subject to acceptance following peer-review. Congratulations to Ilija Rašovic from the University of Oxford, UK, who won the 2016 prize with his review Water-soluble fullerenes for medical applications. Ilija commented, ‘My research in materials science is a bit left-field… what I have tried to propose with my literature review is the multiple benefits that fullerenes have in medical applications. There are plenty that have been shown to be useful and better than what is currently available in clinic. They obviously won’t all come to fruition, but there are certain areas where they should, and where they will.’ http://www.iom3.org/news/2016/jul/05/materials-literature-review-prize-winner-announced

There’s Gold In Them Hills! The Right Time for an Informed Investor! CALIFORNIA GOLD MINE “ For Sale “ ___Cherry Hill Mine___ The Cherry Hill Mine: Established in 1892, a formerly producing, small underground high-grade gold mine. One of the benefits of purchasing a past-producing mine is that the cost of moving into production is much lower than the cost of bringing a mine from the exploration phase to the production phase. Location: When thinking of mines you tend to visualize a hard-to-reach, remote, backcountry hillsides that require vast amounts of money to ensure adequate infrastructure. That isn’t the case with Cherry Hill. Because Cherry Hill is a formerly producing mine, all the infrastructure is already there. That means you have a leg up on some of the costs involved with getting the mine up and running. The mine is just a short ride from the town of Yreka, California, down a state-operated, paved road that turns into a well-maintained gravel road. It's easy to get to and has great access to the I-5, a major artery running north-south along the West Coast. It also means that when you do ramp up production, the heavy-duty trucks won't have much of an issue getting the ore from the mine to the mill. Historical Geological Reports: 1892 0.97 oz Au/ton with Ore running at $20.00 Au/ton (Yreka Journal, 11/16/1892). In 1892 100 tons milled by Selby avg. $61.00/ton (3oz Au equivalent/ton) (Yreka Journal 12/7/1892). On July 24th 1900 the mill run produced $5,300. (254.4 oz Au; 10.7 oz/day; 10 tons/day at 1 oz Au/ton Mining and Scientific Press 7/14/1900). 2003 Core Drilling produced 25' of 1.024 oz Au/ton - 30' of 4.758 oz Au/ton and 39.5 oz Ag/ton. Historical Resource Estimate by R. L Hill, CA Reg.Geologist #3386, Jan 5, 2009. Primary Target - Queen Vein WQ #3 and WQ #4 levels at 8889 yrds³ = 20,000 short tons at 1 opt at $1200 worth $24,000,000. Level 2 - WQ #4 to Camp Level at 9778 yrds³ = 22,000 short tons at 1 opt at $1,200 worth $26,400,000. Camp Level to Long Tunnel Adit approx 300,000 oz...previous owner estimation. 42,000 tons blocked out - based on established mine plan. 43-101 independent Technical Report completed May 22nd, 2012. Between 2011 - 2013 approx $2.6 million spent on exploration and development mining (all figures verified by audit). Low cost producer - estimated cost per oz Au at $400. Metallurgy testing (Norris Labs of Montana) indicates 95% recoveries for gold and 87% for silver. 80% of recoverable ore from gravity. Eight known adits on 7 unpatented lode claims situated on 94.6 Acres. Multiple assays completed with underground surveys. Defining a resource is a big expense for exploration companies, costing millions of dollars to complete. In purchasing a previously producing mine, You will have forgone the costly resource definition process because, “this was all done, we know what's here, so just go mine it!” Price $1,295,000 - Will consider all reasonable offers For the opportunity to discuss the mines in further detail, please contact: Philip Physioc [email protected] or (702) 822-0237

A lecture given by Miles Stopher of the University of Cambridge, Department of Materials Science and Metallurgy, for the 2016 Literature Review Prize of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (London). The effects of neutron radiation on nickel-based alloys in thermal reactors are defying predictions that were made based upon accelerated testing in fast reactors. As nickel-based alloy components face significant doses in aging thermal reactors and their role in Gen-IV reactor designs becomes prominent, the literature on the effects of radiation on such alloys must be reviewed to enable better structural integrity assessments for relevant components and optimise alloys with respect to irradiation embrittlement resistance. This paper reviews the available data on the effects of radiation, notably neutron radiation, on nickel-based alloys and discusses the possible mitigation strategies and design opportunities for radiation embrittlement-resistant alloys based on recent developments in alloy computational design. The Materials Literature Review Prize of IOM3 aims to encourage the preparation of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree in the materials field, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – A call was made on Tuesday for the current surfeit of highly trained but jobless South African mining engineering university graduates to be directed towards spearheading a research revolution involving the creation of mining clusters that have agriculture on waste mine land and mineral recovery from slimes dams as their economic underpin. Veteran mining research commentator Dr RE (Robbie) Robinson, the one-time National Institute for Metallurgy, now Mintek, director and serial commentator in the Journal of the South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (SAIMM), makes the call in the attached Creamer Media’s Mining Weekly Online video interview.

Welcome To Norilsk The Most Polluted City On The Planet Norilsk is a mining city, with a population of more than 170,000. It is the northernmost city (100,000+ people) in the world. The average temperature is -10° C and reaches lows of -55° C in the winter. For two months of the year, the city is plunged into polar night when there are zero hours of sunlight. The entire city, its mines and its metallurgical factories were constructed by prisoners of the nearby gulag, Norillag, in the 1920s and 30s. 60% of the present population is involved with the city's industrial processes: mining, smelting, metallurgy and so on. The city sits on the world's largest deposit of nickel-copper-palladium. Nearly half of the world's palladium is mined in Norilsk. Accordingly, Norilsk is the 7th most polluted city in the world. This documentary project aims to investigate human adaptation to extreme climate, environmental disaster and isolation. The living conditions of the people of Norilsk are unique, making them an incomparable subject for such a study. —Elena Chernyshova https://www.lensculture.com/articles/elena-chernyshova-days-of-night-nights-of-day

Washington, DC: US Government Printing Office. This year, we are celebrating the anniversary of a truly historic event. Seventy years ago – on April 13, 1947 – the governments of the USSR and India announced their decision to establish official missions in Delhi and Moscow. This step on our part logically followed up on our course for assisting India on its way to national liberation and contributed to strengthening its independence. In the decades that have followed, our bilateral partnership has further intensified and strengthened, and has never been subject to expediency. Equal and mutually beneficial relations of the two States have steadily developed. This is quite natural. Our peoples have always had mutual sympathy and respect for each other’s spiritual values and culture. Today, we can take pride in what we have achieved. With Russia’s technical and financial assistance, the pioneers of Indian industrialization came into existence: metallurgical complexes in Bhilai, Visakhapatnam and Bokaro, the mining equipment plant in Durgapur, the thermal power station in Neyveli, the electromechanical enterprise in Korba, antibiotics plants in Rishikesh and the pharmaceutical plant in Hyderabad. Soviet and, later on, Russian scientists and academics participated in the establishment of research and education centers in India. These include the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay, research institutes of petroleum industry in Dehradun and Ahmedabad. We are proud our specialists helped develop India’s space program. Thanks to this fruitful bilateral cooperation, in 1975 India’s first satellite, Aryabhata, was launched, and Indian citizen Rakesh Sharma travelled into space in 1984 as a crew member of Soyuz T-11. In August 1971, our countries signed the Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation, which set forth the fundamental principles of bilateral relations, such as respect for the sovereignty and each other’s interests, good neighborliness, and peaceful coexistence. In 1993, the Russian Federation and the Republic of India confirmed the inviolability of these basic principles in the new Treaty of Peace, Friendship and Cooperation. The Declaration on Strategic Partnership signed in 2000 provides for close coordination of approaches to ensuring international peace and security and resolving pressing global and regional issues. Annual summits have become an established practice in the Indian-Russian bilateral relations allowing us to discuss in a timely manner the efforts taken to accomplish our objectives and set long-term goals. In early June, we will have another summit with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in St. Petersburg. He is expected to attend the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, in which India will for the first time participate as a partner country. http://stellite.com/ProductsServices/Components/WroughtProducts/tabid/209/Default.aspx A fundamental feature of the forming process is the improvement in the properties of the wrought material, brought about by changes to the grain structure during plastic deformation and heat treatment. During the forming of Kennametal Stellite® sheet and bar the orientation and size of the fibers are optimised and the material achieves higher strength than cast material of the same chemistry. After forming, the sheet is cut into blanks of suitable sizes by, for example, water-jet cutting or laser cutting. These blanks are then processed into finished parts.

Kal Kotecha, PhD, editor and founder of The Junior Gold Report thinks 2017 will be a fantastic year for junior miners. We spoke to Mr. Kotecha at PDAC 2017 in Toronto, where he tells us which of Donald Trump’s policies will have a positive effect on the gold price. He also thinks that raising interest rates will be good news for gold, despite conventional wisdom that says the opposite. Finally, he shares some tips on how to avoid “emotional investing” when it comes to junior mining stocks (our favourite: “Date your stocks, but don’t fall in love with them!”) and why he thinks that smart money will soon be flowing into gold and silver.

English/Nat The United Nations is launching a public health awareness campaign after discovering that lead pollution levels in parts of Kosovo are well over the levels accepted by the World Health Organisation. The U-N has found that levels around some towns in the north of the province are 200 times higher than the maximum safe levels accepted by the World Health Organisation. Air quality in the area has deteriorated since June when a smelter plant was reopened at the Trepca Mining and Industrial Complex at Zvecan, outside Mitrovica. The U-N says the plant needs filters and other air pollution safeguards as the concentration of lead in the air has risen above the 1991 level. Even then, pollution levels in the area around Zvecan were among the highest in Europe. Some 14 mines in the complex produce gold, silver, lead, zinc and cadmium. On Thursday in Mitrovica, Oliver Ivanovic, Serb representative of Northern Mitrovica, Bajram Rexhepi, the Albanian mayor and William Nash, the U-N representative in Mitrovica, had blood tests to check their lead levels. All K-FOR Dutch and French troops, as well as local residents in the area, have been ordered to have blood tests as well. The U-N's call for civilians to come to hospital for testing followed a news conference on Wednesday in which they complained about the Zvecan plant. It stopped short of detailing how it could reduce the health endangering emissions at the plant, which is run by Serbs that report to Belgrade and who deny operations at Kosovo's largest industrial complex are damaging the environment. U-N officials said they have attempted to contact the Zvecan managers, whose facility lies north of Mitrovica in the last major concentration of Serbs in Kosovo, but got no response. Zvecan is part of the giant Trepca mining complex whose vast mineral wealth is hotly contested by Serbs and the province's majority ethnic Albanian population. The 14 lead, zinc and gold mines, nine flotation plants, two metallurgy plants and 14 factories are in poor repair and straddle the dividing line in ethnically partitioned Mitrovica. The U-N has run Kosovo since NATO forces expelled Serb troops last year in the wake of a 78-day bombing campaign and is in charge of all former state property in the province, such as the Trepca group. Serbs dispute the U-N's presence and its right to direct operations at Trepca. Rights to Trepca's metals output are also claimed by Greek engineering group Mytilineos. SOUNDBITE: (English) "I am very concerned because I was a Minister for Health you know, so I know a lot about that. Maybe it's nothing but will take care of the population this is important, population including Dr. Rexhepi and Oliver Ivanovic. This will be better for everybody...We want to repair the factory that's all." SUPER CAPTION: Bernard Kouchner, Head of UNMIK Administration in Kosovo SOUNDBITE: (Albanian) "A large amount of smoke is coming out of the smelter and for sure it has a concentration of lead, arsenic and other elements. It is significant to take the necessary measures and to repair the filters in the smelter." SUPER CAPTION: Bajram Rexhepi, Local Albanian Leader SOUNDBITE: (English) "This blood test has to be first of all some kind of health testing and not a political testing. I am afraid that some political levels will try to use this health problem for political purposes and they will try to close down the factory. First of all the lead smelter in Zvecan. Of course Serbs will never support it."
