Presented at the Managing Through Recession Symposium @ COM 2011 in Montreal, Oct 4, 2011 Speaker: Nathan Stubina, Barrick Gold Co-authors: Phillip Mackey (P.J. Mackey Technologies Inc.) Joel Kapusta (BBA) A special commemorative book is being published as part of this year's quinquagenary. The book documents how the "metallurgical landscape" in Canada has evolved over the past 50 years. This retrospective also provided us with an opportunity to look forward and try to predict the forces that will shape our metallurgical and material industries 50 years into the future. This paper explores some of the key issues that the industry will likely face in the future. A brief survey was sent out to a select group of MetSoc members during the summer of 2011. This presentation will also summarize their views.

Formation and effect of topologically close-packed phases in nickel-base superalloys

A lecture given by Alison Wilson of the University of Cambridge, Materials Science and Metallurgy, for the 2016 Literature Review Prize of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining (London). The formation of topologically close-packed (TCP) phases in nickel-base superalloys is an issue of increasing importance as alloys are designed with higher refractory element contents to meet the requirements of next generation turbine engines. This review considers the factors that affect an alloy’s susceptibility to TCP formation. In particular, the debate surrounding the effect of certain individual elements, such as Co and Re, in promoting or suppressing TCP formation is examined alongside the various mechanisms that have been proposed to account for this behaviour. In addition, the detrimental effects of these phases on the alloy’s mechanical properties are discussed, including crack initiation at precipitates, depletion of solid solution strengthening refractory elements and the effect on γ/γ′ rafting behaviour. The Materials Literature Review Prize of IOM3 aims to encourage the preparation of definitive, critical reviews of the literature by students as an essential part of study for a higher degree in the materials field, and subsequently make the best of these available to a wider readership. The prize is administered by the Editorial Board of MST (the journal Materials Science and Technology). Open to any postgraduate student studying in the UK or internationally, the prize carries a cash award, in line with other IOM3 prizes for papers. A winning entry and two runner-up prizes are awarded each year, and all entries are considered for publication in the journal subject to acceptance following peer-review. Congratulations to Ilija Rašovic from the University of Oxford, UK, who won the 2016 prize with his review Water-soluble fullerenes for medical applications. Ilija commented, ‘My research in materials science is a bit left-field… what I have tried to propose with my literature review is the multiple benefits that fullerenes have in medical applications. There are plenty that have been shown to be useful and better than what is currently available in clinic. The Power Institute together with the Terra Foundation and the Sydney Environment Institute presented the two-day conference 'Mining Value: Art and the Extraction of Resources'. Good day, Brigitte Farah here for the minutes of MetSoc. All your news for the month of December from the metallurgy and materials of the ICM. I will start with important dates and news. As it is year-end, our Board of Directors met recently. We reviewed the year, results of our conferences seem positive both on the technical side and financially. We have appointed new members to the Board recently and we look foward to 2019. MetSoc is planning to revive the strategic plan for 2019- we would like to concentrate on membership services and in particular on enhancing and improving our Emerging Professionals program. We have some new policies in place for technical papers and we plan on extending our webinar program that we started in 2018. In addition, we will be discussing the future of the Extraction conference and its place at MetSoc. Stay tuned for any developments! The Call for award nominations is open until January 25. Chemistry of Essential Oils with Dr David Stewart on TruthBrigade Radio http://truthbrigade.org/smf/index.php/topic,5834.0.html Dr. David Stewart studied theology, philosophy, and English at Central Methodist College in Fayette, Missouri (1955-58) and studied chemistry, biology and social sciences at Central Missouri State University in Warrensburg (1962-63). He also trained as a commercial photography at Los Angeles Trade Technical College (1959-60). He completed a BS degree in Mathematics and Physics at Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy in 1965 and was salutatorian of his graduating class. His MS and PhD degrees are in geophysics (theoretical seismology) and were earned from the University of Missouri at Rolla in 1969 and 1971 respectively. His doctoral dissertation is a mathematical discourse on vibrational modes and spectral analysis of frequencies in solid matter applying the 3-dimensional tensor calculus developed by Albert Einstein. He spent a semester in medical school at the University of North Carolina (1973) and has been a Certified Childbirth Educator (CCE) with the American Academy of Husband-Coached Childbirth (AAHCC) since 1975. He has spent some 200 hours in training with Dr. Gary Young (ND), internationally recognized authority on aromatherapy, essential oil production, and the originator of Raindrop Therapy. Dr. Stewart has also been a Registered Aromatherapist (RA) with the nationally recognized Aromatherapy Registration Council (ARC), which is endorsed by the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists (NAHA), of which he is a member. Besides his Ph.D., Dr. Stewart is also a Doctor of Natural Medicine (D.N.M.) recognized and awarded by the World Organization of Natural Medicine Practitioners (WONMP). He has held positions as a hydraulic engineer and hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey in Southern California (1965-67). He was a professor on the faculty of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, (1971-1978) and also held a professorship at Southeast Missouri State University (1988-1993). He was also a part-time United Methodist Pastor (1993-94, 1997-99) in rural Missouri. He has been the Executive Director of the InterNational Association of Parents and Professionals for Safe Alternatives in Childbirth (NAPSAC International) since its founding in 1975. For most of his professional career, Dr. Stewart has been self-employed as an author and lecturer, mainly in the area of alternative health care. He has also served on advisory committees to the American Public Health Association (APHA) and the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM). He has testified as an expert on health matters before state legislative committees, U.S. Congressional committees, medical licensing boards and courts of law throughout the U.S. as well as in Canada. He has authored or coauthored over 300 published works including sixteen books. Two of his books won the "Books of the Year" Award from the American Journal of Nursing. One of his flyers on breastfeeding (published by La Leche League International, LLLI) sold over two million copies in ten languages. He has given many seminars on various aspects of aromatherapy throughout the U.S. and Canada, as well as Australia, Austria, Great Britain, and Japan. He has also made presentations in Lima, Peru, on behalf of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and in Bogota, Colombia, on behalf of the United Nations Disaster Relief Organization (UNDRO). He has been quoted in newspapers and magazines throughout the U.S., has made numerous radio interviews, and has appeared on television in 44 countries. With his wife, Lee, he gave a four-day seminar on essential oils and their applications in Polish (with translators) in Chicago. He is a former member of the faculty of the Institute for Energy-Wellness Studies (IEWS) in Toronto, Canada, where he taught courses on the Chemistry and Science of Essential Oils. He has also been appointed to the faculty of the Metropolitan University of Quayaquil, Ecuador, where he will teach courses in Chemistry and the Botany of oil-bearing plants. Diran Apelian is the Alcoa-Howmet Professor of Engineering and Founding Director of the Metal Processing Institute (MPI) at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). He received his B.S. degree in metallurgical engineering from Drexel University in 1968 and his doctorate in materials science and engineering from MIT in 1972. He worked at Bethlehem Steel’s Homer Research Laboratories before joining Drexel University’s faculty in 1976. At Drexel he held various positions, including professor, head of the Department of Materials Engineering, associate dean of the College of Engineering and vice-provost of the University. He joined WPI in July 1990 as WPI’s Provost. In 1996 he returned to the faculty and leads the activities of the Metal Processing Institute. He is credited with pioneering work in various areas of solidification processing and powder metallurgy – specifically in molten metal processing, aluminum alloy development, plasma deposition, spray casting/forming, and semi-solid processing of metals. During the last decade, he has worked on sustainable development issues, and particularly, resource recovery, reuse, and recycling. Apelian is the recipient of many distinguished honors and awards – national and international; he has over 600 publications to his credit; and serves on several technical, corporate and editorial boards. During 2008/2009, he served as President of TMS. Welcome To Norilsk The Most Polluted City On The Planet Norilsk is a mining city, with a population of more than 170,000. It is the northernmost city (100,000+ people) in the world. The average temperature is -10° C and reaches lows of -55° C in the winter. For two months of the year, the city is plunged into polar night when there are zero hours of sunlight. The entire city, its mines and its metallurgical factories were constructed by prisoners of the nearby gulag, Norillag, in the 1920s and 30s. 60% of the present population is involved with the city's industrial processes: mining, smelting, metallurgy and so on. The city sits on the world's largest deposit of nickel-copper-palladium. Nearly half of the world's palladium is mined in Norilsk. Accordingly, Norilsk is the 7th most polluted city in the world. This documentary project aims to investigate human adaptation to extreme climate, environmental disaster and isolation. THE INTENSIVE COURSE WAS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR THE GROUP TO ENHANCE THEIR ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY IN ENGLISH. Michael A. Cremo Historian of Archeology Abstract: Over the past two centuries, archaeologists have found bones, footprints, and artifacts showing that people like ourselves have existed on earth for many millions of years. But many scientists have forgotten or ignored these remarkable facts. Why? Primarily because they contradict the now dominant evolutionary views about human origins and antiquity. According to these views, humans like ourselves have existed for only about 100,000 or 200,000 years, and before that there were only more primitive human ancestors. This evolutionary paradigm, to which influential groups of scientists are deeply committed, has acted as a "knowledge filter." And the filtering, intentional or not, has left us with a radically incomplete set of facts for building our ideas about human origins. Recovering the complete set of facts takes us on a fascinating expedition, across five continents to various archaeological sites, some long forgotten, some the center of ongoing controversy. On the other hand, the complete set of facts is consistent with the accounts of extreme human antiquity found in the Puranas, the historical writings of ancient India. Bio: Michael A. Cremo is research associate in history of archeology. He is a member of the World Archaeological Congress (WAC) since 1993. His WAC3 paper "Puranic Time and the Archaeological Record" was published in the Routledge One World Archaeology series volume Time and Archaeology (1999), edited by Tim Murray. He is also a member of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA). In 2004 Cremo's paper "The Later Discoveries of Boucher de Perthes at Moulin Quignon and Their Impact on the Moulin Quignon Jaw Controversy," presented at the XXth International Congress for History of Science, Liege, Belgium, was published in a conference proceedings volume of this congress, by the scientific publisher Brepols. Cremo is the principal author of the book Forbidden Archeology, a comprehensive historical survey of archaeological anomalies. In a review in British Journal for History of Science, Tim Murray said the book "provides the historian of archaeology with a useful compendium of case studies in the history and sociology of scientific knowledge, which can be used to foster debate within archaeology about how to describe the epistemology of one's discipline." Cremo is particularly interested in examining the history of the archeology from the standpoint of alternative worldviews, particularly worldviews with foundations in ancient Indian thought. He has given invited lectures on his work at the Royal Institution in London, the anthropology department of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow, the archeology department of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, and many other scientific institutions. He has also lectured on his work at universities throughout the world.

#Meltinggold #Goldrush #Goldprospecting Well folks, I've been toiling away in the gold shack due to the recent storms. Trying to subdue my gold and cabin fever, I decided to have a go at melting a larger 1/4 ounce button of my better quality/purity larger mesh placer gold found last season. While I did succeed and ended up with a beautiful button just shy of 1/4 troy ounce, I did have some "trouble".. Thankfully I wasn't injured and managed to turn the situation around in the end as much as possible. All could have been avoided by a properly adjusted torch mixture, much more room between torch tip and gold, and a bit more patience (not trying to pick up the crucible). An expensive lesson learned!
