Closing the circle: Yves Tielemans at TEDxUHasselt

14:21
Yves Tielemans is a Project Manager at Group Machiels, leading the research, development and demonstration of the Enhanced Landfill Mining concept and the Closing the Circle project. He is convinced that closing the loops is an essential part of the transition to a circular low carbon sustainable economy. Mining landfills for renewable energy and resources? Yes, it is possible! A key part of his approach is to establish a quadruple helix (multi-stakeholder) network that supports the required technological, legal, social, economic, environmental and organisational innovation to drive this transition, thereby addressing a few of the grand societal challenges. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

Dr. Michel Aubertin: Mine Wastes Management @ RIME Part 1

23:36
Dr. Michel Aubertin is the Scientific Director of the Research Institute on Mines and Environment (RIME UQAT-Polytechnique) and a professor at Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal. Dr. Aubertin gives a keynote presentation on work at the Research Institute of Mines and Environment (RIME). This is Part 1 of the presentation. He introduces the principles of waste rock management, both open pit and underground. He also discusses the challenges of tailings after processing the ore. RIME has been dealing mainly with hard rock mines; the low concentration of minerals in the ore produces sizeable quantities of waste rock and tailings from Quebec mines. Dr. Aubertin emphasizes waste rock piles are not dumps; they are engineered structures. He discusses the knowledge gained in the twelve years that the Research Chair has existed at Polytechnique Montreal and UQAT, and explains the significance of the partnerships between the universities, government and industry companies such as Lamgold and Osisko. The benefits of the collaboration include such benefits as: the new lab facilities in both university locations, the 139 graduate students hired to do research, and the 120 academic papers published. Dr. Aubertin describes the details of several projects, including: improving surface disposal of tailings, optimizing surface disposal of waste rock, and water quality production - including mathematical modeling of the hydro-chemical processes. Dr. Michel Aubertin gave this keynote presentation at the Tailings and Mine Waste conference in Banff, Alberta on November 5, 2013.

North Yorkshire's potash mine | ITV News

03:42
In the next 30 years, the global population is expected to increase by more than 30 per cent, which raises the issue of how to feed people around the world. Part of the solution is believed to be in North Yorkshire. Stretching out under the North Sea is the world's largest source of a vital crop fertiliser called Polyhalite. Sirius Minerals, which has its headquarters in Scarbrough, is building a mine close to Whitby to reach the polyhalite, which will then be piped underground to Wilton on Teesside to be exported. It's one of the biggest mining projects in the world and work at both ends of the tunnel is well underway • Subscribe to ITV News on YouTube: http://bit.ly/2lOHmNj • Get breaking news and more stories at http://www.itv.com/news Follow ITV News on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/itvnews/ Follow ITV News on Twitter: https://twitter.com/itvnews Follow ITV News on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/itvnews/

World's largest waste-to-energy plant to be built in Shenzhen, China

04:37
Danish firms Schmidt Hammer Lassen Architects and Gottlieb Paludan Architects have won a competition to design the world's largest waste-to-energy power plant in China. Proposed for the mountainous region on the outskirts of Shenzhen, the waste-to-energy plant is expected to incinerate 5,000 tonnes of rubbish per day – approximately one third of the waste generated by the city's 20 million inhabitants each year. According to the architects, the facility will "utilise the most advanced technology in waste incineration and power generation". The huge circular building will boast a 66,000-square-metre roof, two thirds of which will be covered with photovoltaic panels, allowing the building to generate its own sustainable supply of energy. It will also feature a series of visitor facilities, including a looping walkway that offers a behind-the-scenes look at the inner workings of the plant, before leading up to a rooftop viewing platform. "The project firstly aims to provide a clean, simple and modern technical facility to deal with the city's growing waste," explained architect Chris Hardie, head of Schmidt Hammer Lassen's Shanghai office. "At the same time it aims to educate visitors to this growing waste challenge by taking them on an elevated walkway tour of the plant that ends with a 1.5-kilometre panoramic view of both the surrounding mountains and the 66,000-square-metre roofscape that will be geared to producing actual renewable energy," he told Dezeen. The circular structure will encompass the entire plant, including auxiliary buildings – the aim was to keep the facility as compact as possible. The entrance will be a snaking ramp that starts from a landscaped park and winds up between a pair of smokestacks. IN FOCUS: Open Pit Mines as Assets for Ecotourism and Waste to Energy (WTE) Projects

03:10
During a recent Q&A session with the DENR Secretary and his team on 15 June 2017 at Makati Shangri-la, Marcventures Mining and Development Corporation (MMDC) President Isidro ‘Butch’ C. Alcantara brought into light the potential of rehabilitated open pit mines to become assets for ecotourism and waste to energy (WTE) projects. Alcantara added that since mining companies will eventually have to give up their rights on the open pit mines after rehabilitation, there are currently NO CLEAR RULES & GUIDELINES as to the handover of responsibility on the implementation of future projects once these mines have finished operations. The Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) said it is working in close coordination with the Mines & Geosciences Bureau (MGB) and is reviewing these open pit mines to become sanitary landfills after mine rehabilitation. However, Alcantara was quick to add that “... it’s not just landfill. Some of them are really good prospects for ecotourism and waste to energy (projects)”. Coverage by Maria Paula Tolentino. New TIER 3 MINING AREA + DUMP TRUCK and CONVEYOR BELT UPDATE! - Gold Rush Full Release Gameplay

New TIER 3 MINING AREA + DUMP TRUCK and CONVEYOR BELT UPDATE! - Gold Rush Full Release Gameplay Subscribe if you like! + http://bit.ly/1PG8z9G An update just brought not only the new dump truck, but also a conveyor belt as well! The only issue is they both cost a huge amount of money to buy. Luckily we've been making decent money with both the sale of magnetite and the use of our employees (before they got nerfed) so we have SOME money, but not enough to buy everything. We're setting up a tier 3 shop over in River Town, one of the other parcels and it'll be time to make the best use we can so that we can afford the conveyor belt, and then the dump truck from there! Ok, now, gather around, because I’m about to tell you something. The rest of you can just enjoy this experience, because there is nothing I can tell you to make you even more interested. It’s just a “dream come true” for all of us, right? Gold Rush allows you to discover the tough experience of gold mining. You start with just an excavator, but with passing seasons, you become the wealthiest man in Alaska. We created a big, detailed world with four unique gold mining claims. On each, you will find a fully deformable terrain. Each fragment of our world has its own background story you can discover in spare time. Our main goal was to create a high-fidelity simulation. You will spend a lot of time in the excavator, as it is the main gold mining tool, so with that in mind, we spend the majority of our time giving you the best possible experience. There is no campaign in our game. Instead, we decided, after a long tutorial, you will go into Sandbox mode, where you will not be constrained by anything. Remember, nobody can work all day, all night. Even if you’d like to, the hard work of gold miners is often hampered by the force of nature. Difficult weather conditions can easily spoil the machines and stop the extraction for a long time, not to mention the winter, when you can’t dig at all. ---------------------------------- End Card by Exandria: https://www.youtube.com/user/sora12428719 Hello everybody, I'm Gray! Collier County Landfill, Cells 1 and 2 Restoration

05:09
CLICK SUBSCRIBE! WEB SITE http://www.colliergov.net/Index.aspx?page=3306 The Collier County Solid Waste Management Department is one of the pioneers in landfill reclamation projects in the country. The idea of reclamation of Cells 1 and 2 at the Collier County Landfill was first conceived in the mid 1980s when a pilot test initiated in 1986 was believed to be the first planned landfill reclamation project in the United States. Cells 1 and 2 were unlined disposal areas, comprising approximately 32 acres, located near the northeast corner of the Collier County Landfill. These two cells were filled with solid waste from 1976 through 1979, and subsequently closed by the County and covered with a soil cap. As part of the the long term solid waste management strategy, Collier County started exploring various alternatives for reusing Cells 1 and 2. In 1991, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) selected the reclamation of Cells 1 and 2 as a demonstration project for the Municipal Solid Waste Innovative Technology Evaluation (MITE) program. The main objectives for the reclamation of Cells 1 and 2 included: Increase available airspace at the Collier County Landfill. Decrease site closure costs. Reduce the risk of groundwater contamination from an unlined landfill. Increase the potential growth of airspace at the landfill by eliminating unlined closed cells which cannot be expanded. Improve environmental compliance by eliminating unlined landfill cells. Recover soil for use of landfill cover. Recover recyclable materials. This study proved successful for recovering landfill cover material (i.e., soil). Approximately 10 acres of the southwest corner of Cells 1 and 2 were mined, recovering 50,000 tons of soil suitable for landfill cover. The total volume of waste and soil buried was estimated to be 378,922 bulk cubic yards (bcy) and the total volume of waste and soil excavated was estimated to be 473,715 loose cubic yards (lcy). The full scale reclamation of the 22-acre landfill commenced in December 2007, and successfully completed ahead of schedule and within the allotted budget, at less than $7 million, in September 2008. This saved the County aproximately $350 million in valuable landfill air space. Landfill Reclamation of Cell 1 and 2 Awards: In 2010, the Collier County Solid Waste Management Department received two awards for the Landfill Reclamation of Cells 1 and 2; SWANA 2010 Landfill Reuse Excellence Award, and Sustainable Florida Collins Center for Public Policy 2010 Best Practice Award.

Sindicatum Thailand Landfill Gas to Energy Projects, December 2010

06:20
Landfill Gas to Energy. One unfortunate bi-product of the global economy is waste. Every day around the world waste is created as part of commercial and industrial processes and consumers dispose of unwanted products. Methane generated from the breakdown of this waste represents a major source of anthropogenic GHG emissions. Methane is 25 times more powerful than CO2 as a GHG. Sindicatum Carbon Capital specialist Landfill Gas-to-Energy ("LFGE") Group finances and implements landfill gas-to-energy utilisation projects. In addition to transforming a municipal waste into energy, such projects can qualify for a variety of renewable energy incentives and carbon credits under the Kyoto's Clean Development Mechanism as well as other globally recognised voluntary schemes.

Click to Subscribe! ► http://bit.ly/JOovvU - The trommel is fired up, and the crew is ready for a long shift. We are still trying to decide on a name for this monster machine. It is quite windy today, but that wont stop the crew from having an epic day on the mine. The ground is finally thawing, and we are able to get our first few buckets through the pay dirt separator. Our Mining truck is collecting the pay dirt close to where the wash plant will be mounted. The Trommel was originally built by Mike, aka "MAV",(https://www.youtube.com/MadAddVent) in early 2014. He did an amazing job visualizing and fabricating this powerful machine. The whole thing runs on 12v, and is very impressive in person. Our first runs were successful, but like in any mining company.. the machine takes a beating and could use a few turns of the wrench. After a year with it, and a few tweaks, the machine is back up on the run.. and what a better way to unveil it again then with a great video! Now we are once again able to mine and filter Good Pay Dirt, from the Debris - soon I will set up the wash plant. The Tonka Conversion was done by fellow RC enthusiast Judd Phillips, also known as JRPRC (https://www.youtube.com/user/juddphillips) He has a complete playlist on how to convert your very own Tonka Dump truck into an RC. This webinar is an introduction to a recent contribution on sustainable mining, remediation and metal extraction to the Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Environmental Science, Problems and Solutions. Co- authors are M. Kalin, Michael P. Sudbury and Dr. Bryn Harris. The mining industry developed in an age when resources, space and water appeared limitless. A paradigm shift is needed in mining, remediation and extractive metal processes. Human’s insatiable appetite for metals is estimated to produce annually 20 billion tons of waste rock and tailings, covering about 1000 km2 of land. The annual consumption of fresh water is estimated to be about 80 10-9 tons, most of it will be contaminated. A collision course is on the horizon, given shortages of water and arable land and the ever-increasing global population. The key to a solution to the present un-sustainable environmental management practices lays in ecologist’s view of mining wastes as extreme primordial environments. Natural recovery processes can be supported through ecological engineering measures. This starts with exploration and through to operations, ending with decommissioning. By providing physical and chemical support to promote existing ecological processes within the wastes, we can alter the surface of minerals, thereby decreasing contaminant generation and reducing the volume of drainage by promoting run-off. Supporting the growth of indigenous biota leading to increased agglomeration of contaminant on the cell surfaces and upon death the biomass with its contaminants sinks to the sediments. Through bio-mineralization in the sediment, the metals are stabilized, potentially generating in the long-term biogenic ore bodies. All processes are implemented within the mine waste and water management area. Brief examples are given of: -Acid Reduction Using Microbiology through sediment construction; -Alterations of the mineral surface on waste rock reducing sulphide oxidation by effective nutrient supply carried into the wastes by rain and; -Biological polishing “in alkaline and acid mine waste water by a pH adjustment (if needed) and adjusting nutrient imbalances; -Estimates of reductions in waste generation using efficient metals extraction processes. Boojum’s multidisciplinary team of scientists guided by experts of the industry, has laid the foundation for ecological engineering in publications and field demonstration projects. Moving forward we need to evaluate these demonstration project to use the results to build confidence in the approach of ecological engineering, only then can we achieve the paradigm shift needed for the future of the industry. Learn about the speaker: Margarete Kalin is Research Director and President of Boojum Research Ltd. Visiting The Zero Waste Fair

16:01
I visited the Zero Waste Day fair at the New Paltz recycling center. They had various activities and demonstrations which show us how to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the land fill. This is an annual event which they hope to grow in order to make people more aware of the amount of usable waste that they dump into the landfills. Laura, the owner, and Gia were kind enough to personally show me around. The land fills are being loaded up with garbage by the ton each day. Behind the recycling center is a 14 acre mound which was a landfill in the past. This is always off gassing and leaching out liquid waste. Laura has been studying ways to reduce the amount of waste that goes to the landfill by recycling and reusing anything possible. Even food has been getting sent to the landfill. Food which is perfectly useful although the sell by date is past. They are looking into ways to use the food rather than see it get buried underground. I was shown various stands and demonstrations on organic gardening, composting organic waste, a vegetable oil car and more. Gia demonstrated how you can clean the drains in your sink using only vinegar and baking soda. This is a safe and environmentally friendly way to clean your sink. There are no special measurements an even children can do it. There was a live band and activities for the children. Some of the children's activities were quite interesting for adults as well. We looked at how to compost vegetable material which can be used to fertilize your garden. Even the composter itself was recycled. When you look at it, you may recognize the McDonalds kids play tunnel which was saved from being thrown away and turned into something useful. IL&FS: Construction and Demolition Waste Management Facility, Burari

05:28
As Delhi grows, the infrastructure projects like construction of roads, flyovers, metro routes generate large quantities of Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste. This increases further due to the vertical growth in the residential. The city of Delhi itself generates 4000 to 5000 Tons Per Day (TPD) of C&D waste. The unsegregated municipal waste (often mixed with the C&D waste) gets finally dumped to the various dumpsites of the cities, low lying land for a price, in public land or along the roads, ridge areas(which are city’s green lung)or river banks in an unauthorized manner. Such dumping strewn across the city chokes surface drains, disrupts traffic, pollutes water and is an eyesore on the urban landscape. It has been also reported that the dust from construction activities contributes to Particulate Matter. Combined with burning of waste and road dust, C&D waste contributes to over 20% of air pollution in Delhi. Recycling of C&D waste is likely to ease this pressure by reuse of a major portion of the waste generated. In this context, an initiative by North Delhi Municipal Corporation (NMC) with IL&FS Environment is a ray of hope shining through the blinding construction debris in the Nation’s Capital. This unique project at Burari (Jahangirpuri) is based on a Public Private Partnership (PPP) framework. It is India’s first large scale operational C&D recycling facility. The plant is compliant with MSW, 2000 Rules and was originally set up to manage 500 TPD of C&D waste. Recognizing the pollution abatement capability of the facility, Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) enhanced the project’s capacity to 2000 TPD. Currently, the facility scientifically processes 1200 TPD of C&D waste. The technology for the plant was adapted to suit the C&D waste generated in India. The wet processing technology incorporated at the Burari plant to minimize dust and noise pollution. The facility gets mixed C&D waste from 28 designated points in 3 zones (Karolbagh, Sadar Paharganj & City) of North Corporation. Once ta the plant, the waste is segregated into big concrete pieces, mixed C&D waste as per size and unrecyclable materials like plastic, wood etc. The wsate is crushed, washed and is recycled into aggregates, which is in turn are converted to Ready Mix Concrete (RMC), Cement bricks, hollow bricks, pavement blocks, kerb stones, concrete bricks and manufactured sand. The products have been tested in various laboratories and found to be suitable for usage in various ways. The facility uses recycled water for processing waste. The plant is able to recover and recycle about 95% of incoming C&D waste. The facility has ISO 9001, 14001, 18001 and SA 8000 (i.e; Social Accountability) certifications. The plant has processed more than 15 lakhs tons of C&D waste since its inception in 2009. The waste would otherwise have been dumped illegally in Yamuna and other environmentally sensitive zones. Using of recycled aggregate in this process reduces the consumption of fresh stones and sand, thus conserving our Natural resources and helping in reducing sand mining. Besides helping in reducing water and air pollution, the plant reduces the burden on the landfill/dumping sites of the city and saves precious urban land. More than 25% of the total solid waste generated in India is coming from the construction waste alone(ref. Central Pollution Control Board - CPCB) report). With the rise in air pollution related health (respiratory) problems and judicial interventions, the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) face enormous pressure. The National Green Tribunal has also issued notices in this regard. In light of these problems, it is vital to have replicable models like the successful C&D waste management project at Burari. The project has provided a paradigm shift from illegal dumping to scientifically processing and recycling of C&D waste. Landfill Becomes Nature Park

01:11
A landfill becomes a nature park. The Mucking Landfill in Essex, England was one of the largest trash dumps in Europe. For 50 years, trash from London was shipped down the River Thames to the 845 acre Essex landfill, creating a layer of waste 80 feet deep. Now, after a project costing around 3.8 million dollars, part of it has been turned into a nature preserve for rare wild flowers and wildlife. The location has been turned into a nature park, where all kinds of wildlife can be found thanks to the Essex Wildlife Trust. Several species of birds have been observed in the area, along with harvest mice, newts, orchids and adders to name a few. Sir David Attenborough, president emeritus of The Wildlife Trusts said that the "project is visionary and one of many remarkable projects led by The Wildlife Trusts around the UK that bring benefits to the natural world and communities." Another landfill in Grimsby, England is going to be transformed into a 17 acre park and the location of 250 prospective homes. The site in Grimsby has not been used for anything since the 1970s.
