Change the world one letter at a time. Step 1: Identify subject Identify the article or subject with which you want to take issue, including dates for reference and fact checking. Include your address, phone number, and e-mail address in your letter's header so that your piece has a chance of being published. Tip Don't alienate your readers by attacking anyone. This is a public dialogue. Step 2: Read examples Review newspaper editorial pages or online letters to pluck good ideas or emulate tone and style. Decide if you are praising someone's actions, writing a complaint letter, or correcting bad information. Tip Don't expect miracles. Be happy that you were able to spout your message unaltered for public consumption. Step 3: Keep it short Write a brief, intelligent, and easy to understand composition of 150 words. Pick one specific reason the topic deserves discussion. Step 4: Be witty Show your wit and be yourself, so that the reader is comfortable considering your argument. Find original ways to get the point across with your own fresh perspective. Step 5: Keep audience in mind Write the letter only for this audience and publication rather than broadening your message for wider consumption. Local appeal is a significant factor in getting it in the paper. Step 6: Propose solution Propose a respectful and rational resolution in the last paragraph. Invite the reader to support your cause without sounding like a salesman. Step 7: Wait Wait before submitting another piece. Editors want their editorial letters to vary. If your letter is not printed within a couple weeks, send it to another paper. Keep trying to get your voice heard! Did You Know? Founded by Ben Franklin, The Saturday Evening Post is the oldest American magazine, dating back to 1728.

Editing: Things they don't tell you about what journal editors want

21:02
Pippa Smart, independent publishing and research communications consultant and Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Learned Publishing, provides some insights into the ‘black box’ of editorial decision-making and how authors can improve their chances of article acceptance. Recorded 6 July 2016 at a MedComms Networking event in Oxford. Produced by NetworkPharma.tv = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = ABSTRACT: Many authors are mystified both by the time it takes to publish work, and by the reasons for its being rejected or accepted only subject to revisions. The process of publication is actually straightforward. Following initial checks for completeness, suitability and plagiarism, high-impact journals tend to reject 70% or more of papers immediately, i.e. within a week or so, while those with less strict criteria will reject at least 30% of submissions. The commonest reasons are that the work is out of scope of the journal, or the quality is insufficient for a variety of reasons, from lack of originality, to flawed science and poor quality writing or overall structure. The review process is generally very time-consuming. It is standard practice to have three reviewers per article; one or two may be suggested by the authors, though not necessarily accepted. Recruiting these reviewers may require eight or more invitations. An editor will normally allow two weeks for review; however, deadlines are frequently missed, and the reviews received may be contradictory or unhelpful, necessitating a further round of reviewer recruitment or sometimes arbitration by an additional reviewer. Acceptance without changes following review is rare; the most common decision by an editor is to request revisions, which may be minor or major. Authors can greatly improve their chances of acceptance by carefully reading journal author guidelines, checking journal scopes to ensure that they submit to a suitable journal, and submitting good quality work. A good article will be attractive to a journal editor, communicate its message clearly and concisely, and encourage citation. TTA Podcast 238: A Letter to the Editor

01:32:47
SUPPORT OUR SPONSOR: audiblepodcast.com/thinkingatheist A listener on the TTA Facebook page recently asked Seth Andrews to respond to a "Letter to the Editor" posted in Seth's hometown paper, the Tulsa World. Usually, as skeptics, we let these kinds of posts slide, because they often don't accomplish much and/or they generate more trouble that they're worth. But in this case, Seth responded, and this show chronicles the exchange, the fallout, and the curious tactics of the indignant commenters who couldn't prove the god they were defending. Yes...it's a rant. (Gonna be one of those shows.) Enjoy. Sam Harris: An Atheist Manifesto: http://www.truthdig.com/dig/item/200512_an_atheist_manifesto

Being Banned for publishing letters to the editor.

02:30
This letter marks the last letter I was able to publish in any place other than my local paper which is the Daily Review in Towanda. This seems to mark an organized effort to stop me from spreading the word or punishing me for talking about the CIA. Perhaps my letter hit too close to home. If there can be a no fly list.. there may be a no publish list. Think about it. DuPont: Investigate the CIA for school bus mishap Friday, Apr. 8 | 1 comments What was the Central Intelligence Agency doing by using school buses in a bomb sniffing exercise? The CIA does not knit sweaters, cook brownies or bake cakes. The CIA is known for toppling duly elected governments, assassinations and smuggling drugs in body bags of dead soldiers. How many buses were involved in the incident that used Loudoun County school buses to hide an explosive used by terrorists? How much C-4 was used in each bus? Was the C-4 specially packaged? Could it be that the exercise was to determine how to conceal C-4 to avoid detection by dogs? Granted that C-4 is allegedly difficult to explode. But if it so safe, could kids bring it to school? Can we bring it on an airliner or in a courthouse? Unfortunately, most of us don’t know that the FBI worked with an Egyptian operative to help terrorists blow up the World Trade Center in 1993. The FBI failed to switch the real explosives to harmless powder and six people died and 1,000 were injured. In 1996 ,TWA flight 800 exploded at 13,000 feet just six weeks after being used in a K-9 bomb sniffing exercise. PETN and RDX residue was found in the recovered submerged wreckage! I feel a full investigation of this unlikely CIA activity should take place immediately. And while they’re at it perhaps we can have access to 28 pages of the 9/11 Commission report which would explain how the Saudi’s and President George W. Bush got us into this current unending mess. inspired by the true story of Army Sgt. Michael C.Taylor and his mother Stephanie Tompkins. You might remember the story of this family from the national news broadcasts and newspaper articles the story received. Sgt. Michael C. Taylor sent a Christmas card to his mother while serving in Iraq. Stephanie received the card in the mail just hours before Army officials came to tell the family that the 23-year-old soldier had died when an improvised bomb exploded in Iraq.

Improving Research Writing for Publication (Full Lecture)

48:20
*Presentation by Kevin Heintz, Wordvice Content Manager/Senior Editor, at the annual convention of the Transplantation Society of Taiwan on 3 November, 2017. What Does “Quality of Writing” Mean and Why is It Important in Manuscripts? In the world of clinical and scientific research, rejection by journals is the norm rather than the exception. Almost all researchers who write manuscripts will receive rejection letters from journals, especially in the beginning stages of their careers, and thus rejection should be seen as a learning experience rather than something to be dejected about. This reality raises the question all researchers must ask themselves: “Why are my manuscripts being rejected?” And from a wider perspective: “What are so many manuscripts so often rejected?” One likely answer to this question is that there is a deficiency in “quality of writing” in a great many manuscripts. This can lead not only to rejections, but to continued requests for revision and resubmission (if the research itself is deemed significant and valid), as well as deferment, costing researchers extra time, money, and effort. While there is endless excellent research being conducted at any given time, the manuscripts that get published will combine novelty, relevancy, impact, and other scientific parameters of a good manuscript with another parameter whose importance is often overlooked: “quality of writing.” This is the topic of my presentation today. This video includes: ✔ A comprehensive overview of common problems with “quality of writing” in research papers submitted to journals ✔ Graphics and slides from studies that breakdown the errors in content, grammar, and style derived from millions of edited words in research papers ✔ Tips and suggestions for authors in eliminating these errors prior to submitting their manuscripts Who should watch this video: ★Research writers writing a paper for a journal or conference ★Students interested in learning how to edit their work For more useful writing tips, check out these posts on our “Resources” page: “How to Write the Best Journal Submissions Cover Letter" https://wordvice.com/journal-submissi... “100+ Strong Verbs That Will Make Your Research Writing Amazing” “How to Write an Abstract” “Which Tense to Use in Your Absract” Wordvice Journal Submissions Page https://wordvice.com/category/journal... Australian and major United States newspapers, such as The New York Times and The Boston Globe, often classify editorials under the heading "opinion". Illustrated editorials may appear in the form of editorial cartoons. Typically, a newspaper's editorial board evaluates which issues are important for their readership to know the newspaper's opinion on. Editorials are typically published on a dedicated page, called the editorial page, which often features letters to the editor from members of the public; the page opposite this page is called the op-ed page and frequently contains opinion pieces by writers not directly affiliated with the publication. However, a newspaper may choose to publish an editorial on the front page. In the English-language press this occurs rarely and only on topics considered especially important; it is more common, however, in some European countries such as Spain, Italy, and France. In the field of fashion publishing, the term has been adapted to refer to photo-editorials – features with often full-page photographs on a particular theme, designer, model or other single topic, with or (as in a photo-essay) without accompanying text.

Successful Letters in Physical Review Letters, a talk by Serena Dalena, Associate Editor

42:18
Successful Letters in Physical Review Letters - An Editor’s perspective: Colloquium by Serena Dalena, Associate Editor, Physical Review Letters. The talk was recorded at Chalmers University of Technology 20 April 2017. Abstract of the talk: Physical Review Letters publishes over 20,000 pages of scientific content per year while maintaining its presence as the premier physics journal. The purpose of this talk is to shed light into PRL editorial process and policy and address the many questions frequently raised by the thousands of active authors, referees and readers. How do the editors determine which papers to publish in PRL? What how-tos should you know as an author and a referee? Why should you submit your work to us? How are journals in general and PRL in particular reorienting amid increasing competition and other challenges? Serena Dalena's top-three best tips to authors: 1. Good communication between the authors and the editors is fundamental, and it starts with the cover letter, that should always be included in your submission. Explain shortly, in no more than two paragraphs, what the main result is and why it is important. Try also to clarify any differences in respect to previous works. 2. Writing a good Letter: Abstract: Explain what the result is and why it is important, plus possibly a sentence or two of introduction, motivation, methods, caveats. Introduction: Give sufficient background so the general reader can understand what you did and why you did it. Body: Try to be clear, use for example heuristic explanations, but making a strong case for the result takes precedence. Conclusion: Summarize what you did, note key equations and specific results. If there is a main numerical result, quote it there. Go back and make sure the abstract contains the most important results. Describe what is next. Generally I would suggest to ask a colleague that is not a specialist of your work to read the paper and give you some feedback. Clarity is essential for a good Letter. 3. Maintain always a formal and collegial tone when replying to the referee’s reports, and make changes to the manuscript accordingly. Should you have any concerns, let the editor know.
