Project management - 31 - Need to manage a project? English at Work gives you the language

05:25
It's time for Anna to develop Tip Top Trading's European marketing strategy but where should she begin? Her boss, Paul, doesn't have a clue so it's down to Anna to work out what to do. Listen in to find out what her plan is and how she sets out to manage the project of securing a deal with a French company. For more English at Work: http://www.bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/english/features/english-at-work TRANSCRIPT Narrator Oh dear. Do you remember that Tom and Anna are locked in the stationery cupboard? What are they going to do? And what will people say when they are discovered in there? I have a feeling we're about to find out… Denise Goodness, what's that? Anna is that you? And is that you Tom? Anna Yes, help! We're locked in. Denise Don't panic, I've got the key. There. How on earth… Tom …it's not how it looks Denise. We were just… erm… Anna …just looking for envelopes. Denise Really?! Anna Yes, yes, really. The door slammed shut and locked from the inside when Tom walked in. Tom Yeah, she's right. Just walked in, and shut the door and bang. Denise Hmm. Let's just keep it our little secret shall we. (Aside to Anna) I thought you had better taste Anna! Paul Ah there you are Anna, I need a word with you… Oh, you look like you've been caught doing something you shouldn't! Ha ha. Anna …but I haven't. Paul Just joking Anna. Now could you step in to my office, we need to touch base about the European marketing strategy. Anna Are we playing baseball?! Narrator No Anna! Touch base. He wants to catch up with you, probably to see how you're getting on. Go on Anna, let's see what he has to say. Anna Oh I see. That door doesn't lock does it? Paul No, I don't think so. Right Anna. Biscuit? These new peanut ones are quite nice. So how are things with the project? Anna Well, I've done some cold calling and have an order from a company in France. Paul I see. Very impressive but have they signed on the dotted line yet? Anna The dotted line? Paul Have they actually signed the contract yet? Anna Well, no, but… Paul …that's the problem. There's a rival company who's also targeting the European market called Tutti Fruity - and they'll do anything to steal our customers. Anna Oh I see. Paul So, to keep our head above water, we need a clear strategy… and that's why I've put you in charge. So what shall we do? Narrator I've a feeling Paul hasn't a clue – that's why he wants you to come up with the ideas. Anna I think you're right – but I don't know what to say. Narrator Tell him we need to price the rivals out of the market, that means offer the lowest prices so nobody wants to buy plastic fruit from our rivals. You could say that we need to corner the market, that means Tip Top Trading dominates the plastic fruit market. Anna Oh, thanks. That's very useful. Paul So Anna, any thoughts? Anna Lots Paul. I think we've got to compete on price. Paul Oh yes? Anna We need to price Tutti Fruity out of the market. We need to corner the market so that everyone knows we are the best choice for good quality, good value plastic fruit. Paul I like it! Anna And… and… Narrator Tell him we need to build good relationships with our customers – that means we give them good service. Anna …we need to build good relationships with our customers. Talk to them regularly, send them gifts… go and meet them face to face. Paul Face to face? Yes, great idea – just what I was thinking. If we follow this strategy I reckon there could be a bonus for us all by Christmas. Narrator Well done Anna. Very convincing. If you can put your ideas into practice you'll save the company. Let's remind ourselves of the words you used to create the European marketing strategy… We've got to compete on price. We need to price the rivals out of the market. We need to corner the market. We need to build good relationships with our customers. Narrator Well, things seem to be going well for Anna… or are they? Denise Anna! Anna! That man from France has called again and left a message. He's not happy this time. Something about us trying to rip them off! Anna What? Rip them off? Denise It means over charging them or giving them poor quality goods. Anna That's not fair. I'm going to have to sort this out. Narrator That's it Anna – go and build a good relationship with your customer! Bye for now.

A Day in a Project Manager's Life

03:37
https://www.elementool.com/Services/joinPage/joinPage.aspx?freetrial&referral=PrMngrYouTube Being a project manager is really a pretty tough job. Every day is stressful because there's a ton of responsibility on your shoulders when you're in charge. And no matter how good the work is, people always remember that one little thing in the project that didn't go right. It's like they don't even notice the thousand things that DID work perfectly! When you manage a team of people like I do, there are hundreds of tasks that have to be completed for each project, and, honestly, it's impossible to keep track of them all. I'm constantly running around, chasing people down, trying to make sure they're all working on the right tasks. It's extremely stressful. I feel like I spend half my day saying "What are you working on?" to everyone in sight. And you wouldn't believe how many times when I do ask someone what they're working on, I find out that they're putting all their time into a low priority task -- which just wastes valuable time and leads to more delays in the project. It's frustrating. Sometimes I feel like I need to do everything myself. That's exactly why I have to make sure I'm checking up on the team all the time. I'd really prefer not to do it, because it's time-consuming for me and aggravating for them, especially since it interrupts their work. I have to admit that sometimes I feel lost. It's hard to keep track of so many tasks. I have times where I don't really know who's working on what. That can keep me up at night. Especially when we are close to a deadline. Next to "What are you working on?" the second question I catch myself asking people most is "When will it be done?" I have to run a super tight schedule, and I need to know whether or not the project is actually going according to plan. I'm constantly fielding phone calls and emails from clients wondering when the latest feature that they asked for will be ready. You've probably heard this phrase so many times from your clients: "I need an ETA", so for me to keep them up-to-date, I always have to be on top of the progress of the project. And if it's not running on schedule, then I need to have enough time to make changes to the project. There's no question, project managing is a high-stress job. But fortunately I finally got all that stress to go away when I discovered Elementool's Priority List feature. It gives me laser focused control over the projects and my team. I can define a unique priority level to each issue. That way I can make sure that people know exactly what to work on at any moment of the day. So I don't have to worry anymore that they're wasting time doing things they're not supposed to. Sometimes an urgent issue comes in and that means making changes to the project plan and having people stop what they're doing to move on to the new task. The Priority List allows me to makes those updates in just a few seconds on the team's work plan. I can also see at any given moment the progress of the tasks that each team member is working on, and the date that they'll be completed. In fact, you can wake me up in the middle of the night and I'll be able to tell you who's working on what. It's really brought back the feeling that I'm in control. Now I feel more confident that I can finish my projects on time. When I go home at the end of the day my mind is free and I can play with my little girl and not worry about work. I just love it! Thank you Elementool!

The Dynamic Kanban Board: How To Manage Work Projects in your Bullet Journal // PLANT BASED BRIDE

11:56
I'm excited to be sharing my brand new work project management spread with you today! This is a combination of a leveled up to do list and a dynamic kanban board, and I am really looking forward to starting to use it in my day-to-day. I asked you on instagram if you'd rather see this spread or a skincare spread first, and you chose the project management spread so here it is! Don't forget to follow me on instagram so you can have a say in the content I create for you all: https://instagram.com/elizabethturn/ I was inspired to create this spread after reading the following two blog posts: 1. Minimal Plan: http://minimal-plan.com/en/project-management-bullet-journal-2-action-plan/ 2. Ink By Jen G: https://www.inkbyjeng.com/blog/dynamic-kanban-board-in-your-bullet-journal Go follow Claire and Jen, if you aren't already, because they are amazing! So what is a Kanban Board anyway? At the most basic level, Kanban Boards allow you to visualize and map your workflow for projects. The Kanban technique was first established by Toyota in the 1940s (Kanban is Japanese for "sign" or "billboard") and began with physical cards passed down the stream of manufacturing from one line worker to another.  The system is highly customizable and allows teams or individuals full freedom in creating a board that works for them and the types of projects they work on. All you have to do is figure out which steps are universal to all of your projects and lay those steps out in a notebook or on a whiteboard.  The simplest versions I've seen have three categories, Plan / Process / Complete (or To Do / Doing / Done).  I decided to add one more category and ended up with To Do / Plan / Progress / Implement, as these are the steps relevant to the types of projects I tackle at work.  The fun part is that you can split up your project into however many and whatever types of categories you like! Once you have your board set up all you need to do is write each project on it's own sticky note and place it on the board at the appropriate step in the process and move them as they progress to the next step.  This is a very effective tool for visual learners and can be very helpful is you have multiple projects on the go at a time or work with a team! Project Management Simplified: Learn The Fundamentals of PMI's Framework ✓

50:41
✅http://lig.academy - Need a better job? Most LIG members find their ideal employment within as little as 15 days. Welcome to this week's episode where I make project management simple for you. To make it applicable to the majority of the audience, I am teaching Project Management Institute's (PMI) project management framework. ________________________________________________ Textbooks and frameworks are always boring. So, to make project management more interesting for you, I ran a project to demonstrate what steps to take and when. You won't regret spending 50 minutes to learn the basics of a wonderful practice called project management. You can also download all the templates I used in the session here (no need to register); https://thecareermastery.com/career-tips/project-management-simplified/ Although I strongly recommend you watch the entire session without skipping, for those of you who are just looking for snippets of information, you may find below the index of the video; 03:03 What is a project, program, and portfolio and how are they different from operations? 04:08 Project = Project Life Cycle + Project Management Process 04:43 Project Life Cycle 06:52 Process Groups 09:27 LIG, PMP certification or CAPM certification, which one is right for you? It definitely has a sexy tone to it right? Project… I just love the way it sounds. I wonder how cool it must sound in French. Proje… Well, project is a temporary endeavor to create a unique solution. Yeah that’s operations. No Well, the difference between a project and operations is fairly simple. A project ends. So, it’s temporary. You implement your project, you close it, you create a unique product/service/ or whatever outcome you wanted then you are done. Whereas in operations, it’s on-going and repetitive. You may have also heard about the terms program and portfolio. Let me just quickly explain them here. Program is multiple projects put together. Combined. And Portfolio is similarly. Multiple programs put together. So, it’s project, program, portfolio. Now before I go further, and dive deep. You need to understand something crucial. To run any project, you need 2 methodologies. The first one is a project life cycle and the second one is project management process. Most people confuse these 2. And if these are not clear, you can kiss the PMP certification goodbye. It’s absolutely amazing how many content creators in YouTube confuse these two. They are not interchangeable. You cannot afford to confuse a project life cycle with a project management process. Don’t worry I am going to make it very simple for you. Let’s start with Project Life Cycle. Project Life Cycle is unique to a project, to an industry, to your needs. It’s highly customizable. Think of it like this; a human development is a project. So, your life cycle is; 1) Conceiving 2) Birth 3) Childhood 4) Teenage hood. Teenage hood. Is that a word? Teenaging? 5) Adulthood 6) And death Easy stuff right? So, now if it was an IT project. I am not an IT but it would like something like this; High-level design Detailed Design Coding Testing Installation And Turnover This is project life cycle. The term cycle is a bit confusing here. I think. But who knows. This video covers; project management project management institute pmp project management professional certification project life cycle project management PMI managing a project project management fundamentals fundamentals of project management project management for beginners project management course

Stop Managing, Start Leading | Hamza Khan | TEDxRyersonU

18:13
According to Hamza, managing millennials and knowledge workers the way we used to manage traditional factory workers can be disastrous. Speaking through his own experience of being managed and alternatively as a manager, Hamza makes the case that millennials must be lead, instead of managed and given autonomy to complete their tasks, so that they may grow and reach their full potential. If you ask Hamza Khan about his role as a manager, he’ll tell you his approach to managing is to avoid it altogether. Before his success as an award-winning digital marketer and entrepreneur, Hamza was a student struggling to find a practical outlet for his creativity while pursuing a degree in business and political science at the University of Toronto Scarborough. In his third-year of university, Hamza switched his major and received a Bachelor of Arts to facilitate a future career in creative multimedia and storytelling. Since graduating, he has worked as a graphic designer and marketer, and teaches social media strategy at Seneca College. He is also credited with making Ryerson University Canada’s leading university in online student engagement. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx
