Despite irrefutable scientific evidence calling out the dangers of asbestos, 2 million tons of the carcinogen are exported every year to the developing world, where it's often handled with little to no regulation. For this episode of VICE Reports, correspondent Milène Larsson traveled to the world's largest asbestos mine in the eponymous town of Asbest, Russia, to meet workers whose livelihoods revolve entirely around the dangerous mineral. Surprisingly, the risks associated with asbestos mining didn't seem to worry the inhabitants; in fact, asbestos is the city's pride, celebrated with monuments, songs, and even its own museum. Larsson then visits Libby, Montana, another mining town almost on the other side of the globe, where the effects of asbestos exposure are undeniable: 400 townspeople have died from asbestos-related diseases, and many more are slowly choking to death. Why is the deadly industry of mining and selling asbestos still alive and well? Russian/Nat The financial crisis in Russia is about more than just politics - the heart of the Russian economy is straining under the pressure. Even one of the country's biggest industries, nickel mining, has been put in jeopardy by the mounting difficulties. Once fully protected, Soviet production was abandoned in 1994 to make way for free market competition - then Russia's financial crisis bit into its competitive appeal. And now the world's largest nickel producer, Norilsk Nickel, has been left almost helpless as world prices for the metal continue to plummet. Life in Norilsk is difficult at best, and almost always harrowing. A city of more than 200-thousand, it is situated in the arctic tundra, where temperatures during the dark winter hover at minus 40 degrees Celsius and nothing grows - not even a tree. 50 years of non-stop mining and smelting has left this scarred city an environmental wasteland. The air is poisonous and the water contaminated - Norilsk is believed to be the world's biggest source of acid rain. Norilsk Nickel has spent most of its life under the arm of the Soviet government, originally churning out most of its metals for the Soviet military. Now, however, Norilsk sells the majority of its product on the world market -- which means it must be competitive. But since privatisation in 1994, Norilsk with its scores of smelters, mines and production facilities, has suffered one financial tragedy after another. The factory's new owners are a Russian bank, itself nearly destroyed by the recent ruble devaluation. It now has the massive and perhaps impossible task of turning a massive state subsidy into a profit making industry. When the mine went private its new owners inherited a long list of problems, the biggest, all the social burdens of maintaining the city of Norilsk, from public transport, to hospitals, to kindergartens. All of those costs make producing metal in Russia an extremely expensive business. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "Norilsk Nickel has to answer for all of the town's social structure. Unfortunately that is just what history has left us. And without the company supporting the town, that is if we just abandoned those responsibilities, it is clear that the town of Norilsk would cease to exist. We cant just leave our workers, we have a responsibility to them. This is a very heavy load but we are doing our best to slowly transfer much of this responsibility to the government." SUPERCAPTION: Alexander Bururhin, Chief Economist and Head Engineer of Norilsk Nickel Factories Despite all the company funding, life in Norilsk is hard. Housed in crumbling apartment blocks, most workers never leave the factory - day after day it's often the only thing they see. But the standard of living in Russia has fallen so low that these days most Norilsk residents feel grateful they have a job at all -- and that they are paid their wages on time. During Soviet times citizens from all over the Union happily signed up for three to five year high-wage contracts in Norilsk's smelters and mines. The idea was to work hard, save money and head back to the mainland. But after the economy collapsed, industry across Russia has ground to a halt. Most of those who came to Norilsk never got out. And they probably never will. That makes for an ironic twist -- Norilsk was an icy prison camp before it was turned into the Soviet star of metals production. Today many feel they are stuck in a modern financial gulag. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) SUPERCAPTION: Pavel Chernozhukov, Worker Norilsk provides almost half the world's supply of nickel. But despite its amazing resources, production costs are enormous. In the 1970s, South Africa was the world's most prolific exporter of gold. Over the years, industrial decline has seen widespread closures of the mines across the country. However, Johannesburg sits on the biggest gold basin ever discovered. It's perhaps not surprising that many of these abandoned mines have seen a recent boom in illegal mining activity. Everyday, hundreds of illegal gold miners, known as Zama Zamas, descend kilometers deep beneath the surface. The miners often spend weeks underground, toiling away at the country's untapped gold reserves. Observers have suggested that illegal mining is now so widespread, black-market gold arguably supports the communities once subsistent on the very same mines they worked in before they shut down. The lack of policing in the mines has seen the practice go on largely unabated. However, in the absence of law enforcement, the extensive network of abandoned mines beneath the region has become an arena to deadly gang warfare between rival factions. VICE News visited illegal mines near Johannesburg, to meet the Zama Zamas risking life and limb everyday in the violent struggle for South Africa's illegal gold. Hidden Gems: After suffering the Soviets, the Taliban, and the War on Terror, Afghanistan has had its share of turmoil; but can 1,000 billion dollars worth of emeralds lift Afghanistan out of poverty? He's a Frenchman who first came to Afghanistan to train Afghan security services before venturing into the emerald trade. He sees a huge chance here to exploit a market that could easily increase in value twenty or thirty-fold, but the obstacles are not inconsiderable. Just to get to the mines Raphael has to travel the 150 Kilometres from Kabul to Panjshir, right through Taliban kidnap country. When he gets there he finds an industry in the dark ages, where homemade pyrotechnics are exploded in poorly dug mineshafts, killing many miners and ruining the quality of up to 75% of the stones they dig. "If you see the damage being done to these stones... so much is lost", Yama Torabi from Integrity Watch Afghanistan tells us. The government here remains hopelessly out of touch with the industry that "still (uses) a mining law adopted 100 years ago". But as the country prepares for elections and Europeans like Raphael open up the gem trade here, could this be a beacon of hope for the future? While many parts of the world are struggling from catastrophic effects of climate change, Russia is looking to capitalize on it, with the Kremlin driving a narrative that touts the economic benefits. Like more and faster access to petroleum and mineral reserves that were previously unreachable. The Northern Sea Passage, a legendary shipping lane along Russia’s Arctic coastline, has been largely inaccessible for part of the year because of dense sea ice. But now, that ice is melting, opening up a new trade route for Russia's cargo ships. Russian oil companies are already betting big on the new reserves they hope to find in the Russian Arctic, and other industries — like mining — are ramping up production since they now have faster shipping routes to many ports. “The problem of climate change is actually the problem of adaptation to climate change. This is not a tragedy,” said Nobel Prize-winning climatologist Oleg Anisimov. “Certainly some places will become unlivable, but other areas are places that will become more livable.” But the Russian people seem unaware, or unconcerned, about the environmental impacts of these climate change-related activities, like pollution from the booming factories, and wildfires in the North that destroyed million of acres of forest in a major tourism area. VICE’s Gianna Toboni visited Russia's Arctic to see just how big the country is betting on climate change. More films about the Philippines: https://rtd.rt.com/tags/philippines/ - The use of child labour in the Philippine’s Paracale, or ‘Goldtown’, is widespread - Extracting gold involves diving into mud-filled shafts and using toxic mercury - Poverty and lack of alternative jobs force people into this highly dangerous work - Many die young due to work accidents or breathing problems, others develop chronic illness The Philippines’ town of Paracale was dubbed “Goldtown” for its rich deposits of the precious metal. Despite government attempts to regulate mining, illegal pits are still commonplace. They lack even the most basic health and safety and workers are exposed to toxic mercury fumes. Dirty water causes skin diseases and they live with the constant threat of being buried alive. Workers continue to take these risks day after day, because there is no other source of income. Many of the gold miners are children whose families can’t afford to send them to school. Some gold is panned on the surface, but a lot has to be extracted from underground. To do that, prospectors dive into narrow, mud-filled shafts, uses snorkelling masks and long tubes too breathe. If the mine collapses, they have no chance of escape. They have a saying here, ‘while you’re down the mine, you have one foot in the grave’. Several miners have already died that way, others from respiratory diseases caused by inhaling mercury fumes. The toxic metal is used in gold extraction with no safety precautions, so it poisons the air, the ground and the water, causing long-term harm to the whole community. Another danger to the inhabitants of Paracale comes from disused mines, abandoned and left open, waiting for unsuspecting victims to fall in. The business takes its toll on workers, their families and the community. They have been known to demonstrate, demanding safer working conditions, better pay and other job opportunities, but change is slow. Meanwhile, extreme poverty among people who produce one of the world’s most precious metals leaves them no option but to continue with this pitiless occupation. China has dominated the bitcoin mining industry for a couple of years, but fears of a government clampdown are signaling now might be the best time to enter the market elsewhere in the world. And someone just made a big bet that Russia, with its cold weather and plentiful fossil fuel energy sources, is the place to establish a mining venture. Russia could become one of the world leaders in cryptocurrency mining. Powering the crypto-revolution requires a lot of energy. Current annual estimate of bitcoin mining energy consumption: 51 Twh, and rising. This is more than the annual energy consumption of Singapore, Denmark, or Portugal. With abundant sources of affordable electricity and cold weather keeping mining machines cool, Siberia is a privileged location for cryptocurrency mining. En+ is the largest energy producer in Siberia with 19.7 GW of installed capacity. Implement the Chinese strategy of Gold Accumulation Now: http://FutureMoneyTrends.com/China We've watched the Federal Reserve provide 16 trillion dollars for bailing out banks, foreign governments, and essentially the entire global debt system.... We are on the verge of an epic currency crisis...one that could create one of the largest bubbles we've seen in human history. Over the last 5 years we have seen China and Russia stockpile massive amounts of gold, and China is set to have a direct impact on pricing gold in world markets. When China admits to owning 5 times as much gold than what they recently report and the world accounts for their huge mine and gold property acquisitions...we believe the gold price will go absolutely ballistic, with a repricing on the level of $10,000 per ounce or higher, as predicted by former CIA Advisor, Jim Rickards. Signs are already showing that a massive move into gold has started. Right now, some of the best investors in the world are acquiring gold with one of the most legendary resource CEO’s in all of North America, Keith Neumeyer. In 1 year, he’s taken a small gold stock from zero to nearly 10 million ouncs of gold by acquiring 5 separate gold companies!

Check out these 10 countries with the largest gold reserves in the world! India According to the World Gold Council, the Bank of India currently holds 557.7 tons of gold. It is one of the largest stores of gold in the world! This makes up 9.9 % of the country’s total foreign reserve. Foreign exchange reserves is money or other assets held by a nation’s central bank so they can back the national currency. India, home to 1.25 billion people, is the number one largest consumer of the precious metal. Furthermore, India is one of the most reliable drivers of global demand. For example, India’s festival and wedding season, which runs from October to December, has historically been a major market for gold. And probably, one of the most interesting facts about India and gold is that India rarely invests much in gold. This is because as a country, India operates under the belief that buying gold leads to a deficit. And their belief must be proving right as things also seem to be improving for India. For instance, if you look at the last few years, India has increased its gold reserves from 557.74 to 557.77. While this might not seem like a lot, India is also at its highest point in history! In addition to what the country holds, Indian households which are considered the world’s largest hoarders of gold, hold a record 23,000-24,000 tons, which is worth about $800 billion. 9.) Netherlands In the past few years, the Netherlands has held 52% of its foreign reserve in gold. The Netherlands has a reported 612.45 tons. In 2016 it was reported that the bank was looking for a place to store all its gold because they were going to renovate the vaults and needed to moving it. The Dutch central bank is planning to move the country’s gold reserves from the center of Amsterdam to a new complex called the Cash Center. Like most countries, Dutch gold is also held in banks around the world to reduce risk. Security measures to guard the gold 24/7 have become a problem in Amsterdam. 189,000 kilos of gold will be moved at the beginning of 2022. Maybe this is one reason that over the last decade and a half, the Netherlands was selling off tons of gold in order to reduce its reserve. However, there weren’t that many buyers out there and they sold less than the country wanted. More recently the country has had less ambition to sell gold. Currently, the country holds the same amount of tons, 612.45 that they have over the last few years. However, the country has increased its percentage of foreign reserves to 61.2 %. 8.) Japan Japan is another country which had been increasing its gold reserves since the 1960’s. Their official gold holdings were reported at 765.2 tons. About 2.4% of Japan’s gold today is in foreign reserve. Historically, Japan has always held a bit more gold than other countries. This was true until 2011, when they began to sell some of their reserve in order to pump money into the economy after the tsunami and the following Fukushima nuclear disaster. But even with selling, Japan’s central bank has been one of the most aggressive practitioners of quantitative easing. For example, in January of 2016, it lowered interest rates below zero, which has helped fuel demand in gold around the world. 7.) Switzerland Prior to 1997, Switzerland was steadily building its gold reserves. In 1997, the decision was made to sell some of those reserves to bolster the Swiss currency and diversify the foreign reserves. The percent of foreign reserves in Switzerland is currently 6.7 %. Switzerland actually has the world’s largest reserves of gold per capita and currently has reported 1,040 tons. Over time, many citizens in the country started to feel like the bank was getting rid of too much gold. They then banded together with the “Save the Swiss” movement. However, once everyone was able to vote in 2014, the vote came to a no, and gold continued to be sold. During World War II, Switzerland became the center of the gold trade in Europe, making transactions with both the Allies and Axis powers. Today, much of its gold trading is done with Hong Kong and China. Around last year, the Swiss National Bank made a $5.9 billion profit, reportedly from its gold holdings. Russian/Nat Industrial unrest is growing in former Soviet Republic of Kazakhstan. The country's flagship industry - coal mining - is facing economic ruin in the wake of market reforms. Nearly one in five of Kazakhstan's pits have been shut down by strikes after miners went almost six months without pay. Clouds are gathering over the once-flourishing coal industry in the Central Asian republic of Kazakhstan. In its heyday, the Karaganda basin was key to the Soviet Union's mighty industrialisation programme. But now the region's mines are on the brink of catastrophe. Market reforms in the republic have severed generous subsidies from the pits, paralysing investment and wages. But the pit directors are forbidden to raise the price of coal to cover their debts. The mines are forced to provide coal to other industries - but many of these plants cannot pay them back for the energy. Formerly one of the Soviet Union's best rewarded professions, the payments crisis has left over 100-thousand mine workers unpaid for almost six months. The mine managers no longer try to hide the depth of the problem: SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) "The situation has now reached a critical point. We have been virtually unable to pay salaries since December and our debts just keep rising." SUPER CAPTION: Alexander Karev, Mine Director Four of the area's 22 pits are now on indefinite strike. Kazakh legislation all but throttles official trade union action. But the miners have sidestepped their unions and taken affairs into their own hands, organising local strike committees and sharing what little funds are at their disposal. Hostility towards the government is increasing: SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) "They don't care how ordinary workers live, what they have for lunch or dinner, how they can feed their children. We haven't been paid for our labour for six months now. They give us just a pittance and there's not much you can get for a pittance." SUPER CAPTION: Guseyn Khadzhiev, Miner Special shops for miners were once stacked with goods that were unavailable in regular Soviet stores. Now they are virtually barren. Despairing of the government and the ineffectiveness of their trade unions, thousands of miners have already fled Kazakhstan in search of work in neighbouring Russia and Ukraine. The Denishenkos live in a cramped apartment near the pits in Karaganda. Tanya, disabled since birth, is unable to work. Her husband Ivan supports her, their daughter and his mother-in-law: SOUNDBITE: (In Russian) "My family is beginning to starve. There's no money for food, no money for clothes, to say nothing of medicine. I have no idea how we can carry on." SUPER CAPTION: Ivan Denishenko, Miner Working conditions have worsened - 26 miners were killed in accidents last year. 35 miners at this pit refused to come to the surface since Thursday, announcing an indefinite hunger strike. A letter of protest was sent to the Kazakh president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, listing the miners' complaints. But so far there's been no reply and the men are in no mood for compromise as mines stand idle, apart from safety checks. First I thought we should talk about where you can find lithium today. The truth is it’s likely on your body right now, you may be holding it in your hand, or you’re looking directly at it. But you might be surprised to know it’s also used in things like tools, aerospace equipment, military applications and backup storage for our Electric grid. And of course, Tesla’s and other electric cars // Looking to buy a Tesla S or X? Use our referral code and instantly receive $1,000 off and Free Supercharging! (limited) Get Started - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e9QapXri9iY // It is so good for batteries that 39% of all Lithium production goes towards battery production. So what is Lithium anyway? Lithium itself is a soft, silvery-white alkali metal. It is the lightest metal and the lightest solid element. Like all alkali metals, lithium is highly reactive and flammable. So this isn’t something you’d want just laying around your house. Especially if you have a toddler running around like I do... So Lithium is a metal so it must be mined right, like copper? Well, not exactly. It’s true lithium can be mined from rocks but mostly it’s found in brine pools. Lithium is also present in seawater but there aren’t any commercially viable methods of extracting it at this time As an aside when you see a meme floating around the internet showing a giant mine where lithium comes from, it’s a lie. As of 2017, most of the world's lithium production is in South America, where lithium-containing brine is extracted from underground pools and concentrated by solar evaporation. The standard extraction technique is to evaporate water from brine. Each batch takes from 18 to 24 months. With so much demand for lithium it’s a fair question to ask... Are Tesla and others doomed? Well…not really The US Geological Survey’s report for 2017 shows that "Worldwide lithium production increased by an estimated 12% in 2016 in response to increased lithium demand for battery applications. Production in Argentina increased nearly 60%, primarily owing to a new brine operation; the leading Argentine producer also increased production. A producer in Chile reported that its production rose by 20%. Two small Australian spodumene operations, one new and one inactive since 2013, planned to begin commercial concentrate production by year end. Worldwide lithium production capacity was reported to be 49,400 tons in 2015; capacity utilization was estimated to be 64% in 2015 and 71% in 2016. Based on average projections by producers and industry analysists of about 14% growth worldwide, consumption of lithium in 2016 is projected to be about 37,800 tons, up from 33,300 tons in 2015. So the trend is going up, but when you look at the overall picture you find that owing to continuing exploration, lithium resources have increased substantially worldwide. Identified lithium resources in the United States, from continental brines, geothermal brines, hectorite, oil field brines, and pegmatites, have been revised to 6.9 million tons. Identified lithium resources in other countries have been revised to approximately 40 million tons. Identified lithium resources in Argentina and Bolivia are about 9 million tons each and in major producing countries are Australia, more than 2 million tons; Chile, more than 7.5 million tons; and China, approximately 7 million tons. Canada’s lithium resources are about 2 million tons. Congo (Kinshasa), Russia, and Serbia have resources of about 1 million tons each. Lithium resources in Brazil and Mexico are approximately 200,000 tons each and Austria, and Zimbabwe have more than 100,000 tons each. Beyond just producing more lithium, companies like Tesla have focused on creating a closed-loop battery recycling program since as early as 2011. So while Tesla drivetrains are rated to go 1M miles, and the batteries will likely last to last north of 350K miles, once the cars do get turned in, Tesla isn’t going to just throw away those precious metals. If you’re an investor in companies reliant on lithium for their batteries such as Tesla, Apple, Google, or any other company making electronics today, you shouldn’t worry about the supply chain. We’ve got a long road ahead of us and probably by the time we need to worry about a shortage of Lithium we’ll have a new way to make batteries that are even better. // Join Our Community on Patreon!
