The Neuroscience of Eating Disorders

06:30
Many of us are lucky enough to live in a world where food is easily accessible. We no longer have to hunt wild animals or scrounge for edible plants to survive. However, in spite of (or likely because of) this luxury, millions of people suffer from eating disorders. Anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder are three of the most common problems - and they are often misunderstood. Join Alie Astrocyte as she dispels myths and explores the neuroscience behind these disorders. Wim Hof Method | "Brain over Body" Michigan Study

07:00
We have been waiting with bated breath for the results of Wayne State University’s study on the potential for us to influence our body’s response to cold exposure, and are excited to finally share them. The full study is published in the science journal NeuroImage and you can read the full synopsis below. For more great content visit: https://www.wimhofmethod.com/ ===== "Brain Over Body" - A study on the willful regulation of autonomic function during cold exposure The defence of body temperature against environmental thermal challenges is a core objective of homeostatic regulation governed by the autonomic nervous system. Autonomous mechanisms of thermoregulation are only weakly affected by top-down modulation, allowing only transient tolerance for extreme cold. There is however, anecdotal evidence of a unique set of individuals known for extreme cold tolerance. Here we present a case study of a 57-year old Dutch national, Wim Hof, the so-called “Iceman”, with the ability to withstand frequent prolonged periods of extreme cold exposure based on the practice of a self-developed technique involving a combination of forced breathing, cold exposure and meditation (collectively referred to as the Wim Hof Method, henceforth “WHM”). The relative contributions of the brain and the periphery that endow the Iceman with these capabilities is unknown. To investigate this, we conducted multi-modal imaging assessments of the brain and the periphery using a combination of fMRI and PET/CT imaging. Thermoregulatory defence was evoked by subjecting the Iceman (and a cohort of typical controls) to a fMRI paradigm designed to generate periods of mild hypothermia interspersed by periods of return to basal core body temperature. fMRI was acquired in two separate sessions: in a typical (passive) state and following the practice of WHM. In addition, the Iceman also underwent a whole body PET/CT imaging session using the tracers C11-hydroxyephedrine (HED) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) during both thermoneutral and prolonged mild cold conditions. This acquisition allowed us to determine changes in sympathetic innervation (HED) and glucose consumption (FDG) in muscle and fat tissues in the absence of the WHM. fMRI analyses indicated that the WHM activates primary control centers for descending pain/cold stimuli modulation in the periaqueductal gray (PAG), possibly initiating a stress-induced analgesic response. In addition, the WHM also engages higher-order cortical areas (left anterior and right middle insula) that are uniquely associated with self-reflection, and which facilitate both internal focus and sustained attention in the presence of averse (e.g. cold) external stimuli. However, the activation of brown adipose tissue (BAT) was unremarkable. Finally, forceful respiration results in increased sympathetic innervation and glucose consumption in intercostal muscle, generating heat that dissipates to lung tissue and warms circulating blood in the pulmonary capillaries. Our results provide compelling evidence for the primacy of the brain (CNS) rather than the body (peripheral mechanisms) in mediating the Iceman's responses to cold exposure. They also suggest the compelling possibility that the WHM might allow practitioners to develop higher level of control over key components of the autonomous system, with implications for lifestyle interventions that might ameliorate multiple clinical syndromes. What Intermittent Fasting Does to Your Brain

10:16
Learn what intermittent fasting does to your brain. I explain the benefits for brain power performance & function as well as improving memory and overall health . Experience fast weight loss and become smarter with an intermittent fasting diet 🔥 FREE 6 Week Body Transformation Challenge: http://bit.ly/lose-fat52 Fat Loss Calculator: http://bit.ly/2OT4BBS A lot of you know that intermittent fasting can provide some amazing physical benefits for your body. It can help you burn fat and keep it off while enjoying the foods you love in a sustainable nonrestrictive way. but the effects that it has on your brain, your mental clarity, your cognitive ability and in turn your productivity are absolutely incredible. And that's exactly what I want to go over today, the benefits of fasting on your brain and you mind. We've been taught that eating at least three square meals a day is necessary to have a healthy body and mind. Instead of relying on our natural hunger signals many of us have become accustomed to eating out of routine and for entertainment and enjoyment rather than out of true hunger. This has caused many people in the developed world to gain weight, body fat, and develop insulin resistance. Ironically thanks to this, fasting has emerged as a practical, and sustainable solution for weight loss, but fasting has been practiced for centuries before weight gain and obesity became a problem due to the fact that it has so many other benefits especially within the realm of cleansing and healing. One of these benefits is known as autophaghy which is when your body destroys old or damaged cells. When you constantly eat you're body stays in a building mode and it has no reason to enter this natural, regulated process of autophaghy where unnecessary and dysfunctional components of your cells are destroyed and cleared out. It's activated when you stop eating for a period of time and that doesn't mean that you have to fast for a long extended time frame. Fasting for more than 6 hours begins this cleansing phase, so you can experience the benefits with a simple intermittent fasting approach, where you fast for only 16 hours a day. Autophaghy is essentially a way for the body to repair and cleanse itself and we definitely want to allow our bodies to undergo this process because If old or damaged cells stay in your body, they create inflammation and other problems. This natural process of destroying the old allows our bodies to bring in the new. Which leads to many benefits for your brain. Dr Mark Mattson has been studying the brain for well over 20 years. He's a professor of Neurology at John Hopkins University, and he claims that fasting has been shown to increase rates of neurogenesis in the brain. Neurogenesis is the growth and development of new brain cells and nerve tissues. Higher rates of neurogenesis have been linked to increased brain performance, and improved memory, mood, and focus. This has been tested in studies that have confirmed that intermittent fasting stimulates the production of new brain cells. According to Mattson fasting only twice a week could significantly lower the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's and it can help you develop protective measures against damage from a stroke. The shock of fasting stresses the brain in a good way, much like stressing your muscles when you workout. This stress leads your brain to create new cells. The benefits of exercise and fasting on the brain are linked closer than most people think. Both increase the production of protein in the brain, which in turn promotes the growth of neurons, it promotes the connection between neurons, and the strength of synapses which are the junctions that connect your nerves to other nerves and allow them to send signals and communicate with eachother. One of these proteins that get boosted from fasting is an important protein called BDNF. BDNF has been called “Miracle Grow For Your Brain.” It makes your brain more resilient to stress and more adaptable to change helping with the production of new brain cells, and protecting your current brain cells while boosting memory, improving mood, and learning. On the other hand low levels of BDNF are linked to dementi 🔥 FREE 6 Week Body Transformation Challenge: http://bit.ly/lose-fat52 Research: Study showing intermittent fasting increase Nuerogenesis: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4013772/ Study showing the benefits of boosting BDNF: http://web.stanford.edu/group/hopes/cgi-bin/hopes_test/brain-derived-neurotrophic-factor-bdnf/ Study showing that IF can boost BDNF by 50 - 400%: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/12558961 ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2622429/ Fasting helps improve Synaptic Enhancement study: https://www.cell.com/neuron/fulltext/S0896-6273(16)30837-6 Fasting for 24 hours boosted HGH 2000% in men and 1500% in women: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17174641 Fasting can be like exercise for the brain: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/25552960

Neurology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of all categories of conditions and disease involving the central and peripheral nervous systems (and their subdivisions, the autonomic and somatic nervous systems), including their coverings, blood vessels, and all effector tissue, such as muscle. Neurological practice relies heavily on the field of neuroscience, the scientific study of the nervous system. A neurologist is a physician specializing in neurology and trained to investigate, or diagnose and treat neurological disorders. Neurologists may also be involved in clinical research, clinical trials, and basic or translational research. While neurology is a nonsurgical specialty, its corresponding surgical specialty is neurosurgery.Significant overlap occurs between the fields of neurology and psychiatry, with the boundary between the two disciplines and the conditions they treat being somewhat nebulous.

Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teaching Reading: Not Just for Dyslexia! by Dr. Louisa Moats ONBIDA Webinar - 15 May 2019 Instruction based on an understanding of modern cognitive, linguistic, and neurological science can make a tremendous difference to students with reading difficulties, including dyslexia. We review what is meant by "Structured Literacy" and how to teach it. The importance of teaching language skills in an explicit, systematic manner is emphasized. Louisa Moats, Ed.D., has been a teacher, psychologist, researcher, graduate school faculty member, and author of many influential scientific journal articles, books, and policy papers on the topics of reading, spelling, language, and teacher preparation. She was Co-Principal Investigator of an NICHD Early Interventions Project in Washington, D.C., public schools and Principal Investigator on two small business innovation research (SBIR) grants from the National Institutes of Health. In addition, she led the committee that developed the International Dyslexia Association’s Knowledge and Practice Standards for Teachers of Reading. Dr. Moats developed her current approach to teacher training, called LETRS, from her experiences as an instructor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, St. Michael’s College in Vermont, the Dartmouth Medical School Department of Psychiatry, and the University of Texas, Houston. Dr. Moats’ awards include the prestigious Samuel T. and June L. Orton award from the International Dyslexia Association for outstanding contributions to the field; the Eminent Researcher Award from Learning Disabilities Australia; and the Benita Blachman award from the Reading League.

Wake up, I'm Speaking: The Neuroscience of Sleep and Dreaming

01:42:09
It seems that everybody, from comedians, to poets, to world leaders, have something to say about sleep. So why not scientists? Sleep, or the lack of it, is the focus of considerable research in the United States, where sleep disorders and sleep deprivation have been associated with poor cognitive performance, behavioral problems, accidents, ill health and other factors that adversely affect quality of life. When we do sleep, we also dream; in fact, during a typical lifetime, people spend an average of six years dreaming. In the past, dreams have been interpreted as omens of the future, representations of reality, and even divine messages from the gods. Nowadays, we tend to have slightly more rational views about dreams, but their significance and meaning remain a subject of debate in both science and public discourse. Speakers will address what neuroscience research tells us about sleep, sleep disorders, the mechanisms and functions of dreaming, and the impact of sleep research on medicine and society. Speakers: Deirdre Leigh Barrett, Ph.D. Department of Psychiatry Harvard Medical School Deirdre Barrett is a psychologist on the faculty of Harvard Medical School. She is past President of both the International Association for the Study of Dreams and The Society for Psychological Hypnosis. Dr. Barrett has written four books including The Committee of Sleep: How Artists, Scientists and Athletes Use their Dreams for Creative Problem Solving - and How you Can Too. She is the editor of four additional books including The New Science of Dreaming and Trauma and Dreams. She is Editor-in-Chief of DREAMING: The Journal of the Association for the Study of Dreams. Dr. Barrett has published dozens of academic articles and chapters on dreams, hypnosis, and imagery. Her own articles have appeared in Psychology Today and Scientific American. Clifford B. Saper, M.D., Ph.D. James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience Harvard Medical School Clifford Saper is the James Jackson Putnam Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience and Chairman of the Harvard Department of Neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He served on the faculty of Washington University School of Medicine from 1981-1985 and moved to the University of Chicago from 1985-1992. He received a Javits Neuroscience Investigator Award from the NIH, and was named one of the 100 most frequently cited neuroscientists by the Institute for Scientific Information. Dr. Saper was elected to the Institute of Medicine, is a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the Royal College of Physicians (London). Dr. Saper's research has explored circuitry of the brain that controls basic functions such as wake-sleep cycles, feeding, and immune response, and how these circuits are disrupted in neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, in sleep disorders such as narcolepsy and sleep apnea, and during aging. Michael J. Twery, Ph.D. Director, National Center on Sleep Disorders Research National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, NIH Michael Twery is the director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research (NCSDR) in the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's (NHLBI) Division of Lung Diseases at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Dr. Twery has led the NIH's sleep and respiratory neurobiology scientific research group since 1996, and has served as director of the NCSDR since January 2006. In these roles, Dr. Twery oversees the support of research and research training related to sleep disordered breathing, the fundamental functions of sleep and circadian rhythms, and sleep disorder epidemiology and clinical trials. Prior to joining the NHLBI, Dr. Twery was a member of the research faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, and for six years was a senior staff fellow at the NIH's National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

How to Use GKI to Enhance the Keto Diet

12:19
Click Here to Subscribe: http://Bit.ly/ThomasVid The Only LEGIT, FDA-Approved Ketone/Blood Meter: https://bit.ly/2TpNi1Y (Discount Code will Automatically Apply) My Website: http://ThomasDeLauer.com How to Use GKI to Enhance the Keto Diet The GKI, or the Glucose Ketone Index, is a formula that tracks the ratio of blood glucose to ketones as a single value - it’s a biomarker for tracking your metabolic health as well as your level of ketosis Use in Studies Developed by Dr. Thomas Seyfried for management of brain cancer Was created to track the zone of metabolic management for brain tumor management - a biomarker that refers to the molar ratio of circulating glucose over bHB Brain tumor cells are dependent on glucose for survival and cannot effectively use ketone bodies as an alternative fuel, a zone of metabolic management can be achieved under conditions of low glucose and elevated ketones Ketone bodies also prevent neurological symptoms associated with hypoglycemia, such as neuroglycopenia, which allows blood glucose levels to be lowered even further Hence, ketone body metabolism can protect normal brain cells under conditions that target tumor cells The zone of metabolic management is considered the therapeutic state that places maximal metabolic stress on tumor cells while protecting the health and vitality of normal cells Dr. Seyfried noticed in his studies that the therapeutic benefits of keto increased with the lower the glucose ketone index ratio gets - a GKI of lower than 1.0 is prime therapy for patients with cancer Study #1 - Journal of the American College of Nutrition The first study evaluated two pediatric patients; one with an anaplastic astrocytoma, and another with a cerebellar astrocytoma - both individuals were placed on a keto diet for 8 weeks During the 8-week treatment period, GKI dropped from about 27.5 to about 0.7 – 1.1 in the patients The patient with the anaplastic astrocytoma, who did not have a response to prior chemotherapy, had a 21.7% reduction in fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at the tumor site (no chemotherapy during diet) The patient with the cerebellar astrocytoma received standard chemotherapy concomitant with the ketogenic diet Fluorodeoxyglucose uptake at the tumor site in this patient was reduced by 21.8% - quality of life was markedly improved in both children after initiation of the KD The patient’s GKI decreased from 37.5 to 1.4 in the first three weeks of the diet. No discernible brain tumor tissue was detected with MRI in the patient at the end of eight weeks of the calorie restricted ketogenic diet It is also important to mention that the patient was free of symptoms while she adhered to the KD - tumor recurrence occurred 10 weeks after suspension of the ketogenic diet **The glucose ketone index isn’t just for cancer treatment. This value is also of importance for people who have blood sugar issues. The GKI also isn’t just for ketosis.** On Exercise: It is healthy for blood sugar to rise during exercise because the muscles need the excess fuel to compensate for the increased demand placed upon them. But in most people the body will adjust after exercising and bring the blood sugar levels back to normal On Fasting: Tracking the glucose ketone index can be a very helpful piece of biofeedback to understand how your metabolism is responding during the fasting period. Over time, you can look back at different fasting periods and use the index as an indicator of your metabolic state during the course of the fasting period With Food: **Blood glucose and ketone values should be measured 2–3 hours postprandial, twice a day if possible - allows individuals to connect their dietary intake to changes in their GKI** (Your Glucose Level / 18) / Your Ketones Level = Your Glucose Ketone Index You divide the glucose number by 18 because glucose readings in the U.S. are measured in mg/dL, and dividing by 18 converts that number to mmol/L to match your ketones reading References 1) The glucose ketone index calculator: a simple tool to monitor therapeutic efficacy for metabolic management of brain cancer. Science Direct: The redox biology network in cancer pathophysiology and therapeutics https://www.sciencedirect.com/... Universe is created by laws governed by REDOX Principles (the ‘Big Bang Theory’) When charged particles collide, MASS is created (such as planets, stars and galaxies)Electron transfers during particulate collision - known as REDOX Sun is a product of REDOX chemistry So there was light…and the solar dust particles that created EARTH - a REDOX reaction And there was water - ‘Oxidane’ (chemical name for H2O), the essential solvent for REDOX Biology DNA has evolved in the ‘DE-OXY’ form to comply with REDOX-based genetic code Cellular multiplication, differentiation and death are REDOX controlled events. REDOX has propelled life to an ascent The biosphere has evolved under the wings of REDOX. Biological energy (ATP) is derived from REDOX-based charge transfers Each breath taken, interfaces our body (lungs/alveoli) with the REDOX universe. Respiration facilitates O2 transfer into blood with synchronised disposal of CO2 into atmosphere The human REOX journey embarks with haemoglobin in red blood cells. Each heartbeat is controlled by redox signals Free radicals collide with molecules and affect their REDOX status. Prooxidants are discharged by antioxidants to establish REDOX balance Our brain is a major hub for REDOX reactions. Neuronal synapse that forms memory, is a REDOX phenomenon Spermatozoa navigate its reproductive marathon fuelled by REDOX power. Oxidative stress leads to male infertility and erectile dysfunction. What Makes Science True? | NOVA

15:00
What makes science reliable? The ability to reproduce the results of an experiment, known as reproducibility, is one of the hallmarks of a valid scientific finding. But science is facing what many consider a reproducibility crisis, and the stakes are high. Many scientific claims cannot be replicated, and many clinical trials fail as a result. This 15-minute video examines the reproducibility crisis and reports on the outcome of five experiments designed to test the reproducibility of cancer biology studies. While NOVA had no editorial involvement in this video, we believe it is a thoughtful and well-researched exploration of a complex topic, and we are pleased to share it with you. The video was produced by Dakin Henderson and Kelly Thomson, and was funded entirely by the Laura and John Arnold Foundation (LJAF). In the interest of full transparency: LJAF has an interest in this subject matter, is one of a handful of funders that supports the cost of conducting reproducibility experiments, and provided funding to the organizations featured in this video in order to carry out the reproducibility studies covered here. We have been assured that LJAF had no editorial involvement in the video.
