The Office of Fair Trading was a not-for-profit and non-ministerial government department of the United Kingdom, established by the Fair Trading Act 1973, which enforced both consumer protection and competition law, acting as the UK's economic regulator. The OFT's goal was to make markets work well for consumers, ensuring vigorous competition between fair-dealing businesses and prohibiting unfair practices such as rogue trading, scams and cartels. Its role was modified and its powers changed with the Enterprise Act 2002. The Department for Business Innovation and Skills announced reforms to the UK consumer protection and competition regimes. Under the provisions of the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013, the Competition and Markets Authority was established on 1 April 2014 combining many of the functions of the OFT and the Competition Commission and superseding both. Regulation for the consumer credit industry passed from the OFT to the new Financial Conduct Authority from April 2014. This video is targeted to blind users. Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “Fair trade” Many politicians and NGOS argue that free trade is not enough; it should also be fair. On the face of it, fairness is self-evidently a good thing. However, fairness, in trade as in beauty, lies in the eye of the beholder. Frederic Bastia, a 19th-century French satirist, once observed that the sun offered unfair competition to candle makers. If windows could be boarded up during the day, he argued, more jobs could be created making candles. American trade unions complain that Mexicans' lower wages, say, give them an unfair advantage. Mexicans say they cannot compete fairly against more productive American counterparts. Both sides are wrong. Mexicans are paid less than Americans largely because they are, in general, less productive. There is nothing unfair about that; indeed, it helps to make trade mutually beneficial. The mutual benefits of trade also disprove the fair traders' other complaint, that free trade harms poor countries. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy - ITA

This is an extract of video footage taken at a Static Protest held on the 12th November 2009 from 12noon until 2pm. The purpose of this Protest was to demand the resignation of the Director of Consumer Credit of the Office of Fair Trading . The Protest was held outside the building of the Office of Fair Trading, located in Central London at Salisbury Square. The purpose of the static protest was to draw attention to the unlawfull conduct of the Office of Fair Trading, and in particular, the comments and actions of Ray Watson, Director of Consumer Credit. The Office of Fair Trading's press release on 23 June 2009 OFT warns consumers about 'debt sale' scams 72/09 is in breach of Article 6 of the Human Rights Act. They failed to contact Momentum Network Limited or associated sellers with regard to the selling of debt, which they have labelled publicly as criminal, without giving any right to reply. This breaches Article 6 as it denies Momentum Network Limited and any people who sold their debt the right to a tribunal, which in this case should be in a criminal court.

The Institute for Government was delighted to welcome John Fingleton, former chief executive of the Office of Fair Trading, for an in-conversation with Gemma Tetlow, Chief Economist at the Institute for Government. In his talk, he set out his concerns about sweeping changes that the Government is planning to make to UK merger law which he says are a “wolf in sheep’s clothing” that will have “myriad and substantial” costs to the UK economy. The proposed changes will – John argues – extend the Government’s ability to intervene in mergers and investments on the grounds of protecting national security, creating a much more restrictive approach to foreign investment. John explained why he is concerned that these changes will make it easier for lobbyists and other special interests at the cost of UK competitiveness after Brexit. There was an opportunity for audience Q&A.

A parody of this god-awful advert by the office of fair trading: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8Kfql4NeY0 The Office of Fair Trading is an absurd government institution. Like all government institutions it is funded by taxation, rather than by voluntary donation. Because of this its output is not based on market signals, or human demand, but rather a bunch of bureaucrats trying to come up with more retarded ways to waste their budget.
