Finance Career Paths

17:13
In the traditional finance world (excludes quantitative finance) there are a lot of career paths available. I have tried to cover the basic paths however you should know that people with finance backgrounds have ended up in all different types of jobs. Understanding what is required to get to specific careers is important as some paths require different degrees and experiences. These increase the costs associated with these paths and should be considered when reviewing compensation and job responsibilities. 1) Private Equity (Usually investment banking experience is required) 2) Hedge Fund (Usually investment banking experience is required) 3) Investment Banking (Undergrad required) 4) Wealth Management (Undergrad required) 5) Corporate Finance (Undergrad required) 6) Technology Jobs (Non-coding jobs and undergrad required) 7) Consulting (Undergrad required) 8) Business Development/Sales (Undergrad required) 9) If you work hard you could end up in more quantitative jobs such as operational research but usually more quantitative course work or experience is required. How Much Effort to Put Into An Investment Bank Application

01:04
http://www.katsonga.com/girlbanker Get, To Become An Investment Banker (The Book) USA: http://amzn.to/2bb5OFH UK: http://amzn.to/2aIoQAx @GirlBanker: https://twitter.com/#!/GirlBanker How does the graduate recruitment process work for investment banks? This is a very popular question amongst students who want to become investment bankers. The process is very similar across different investment banks and works as follows: 1. An internship application is submitted, usually using a standardized online form (rather than your own stylized résumé/CV). 2. Once your application has been accepted, the interview(s) you are invited to will normally entail all of the following: An aptitude test online or on paper A case study and/or brainteasers A competency based interview A technical interview 3. Accepted to intern in the summer. 4. After the summer internship, you receive a hire letter or a letter stating that you will not be offered a full-time position. The proportion of interns offered full-time contracts varies from year to year and from bank to bank; it is never 100%. Usually banks will recruit a few more people from outside the summer program but at the moment many are not doing this; banks are selecting the best summer interns and that's it, so getting an internship is critical to becoming an investment banker. If you've interned but have not secured a full-time job, you will have a better chance of securing an alternative entry-level position than if you hadn't interned at all, so do not despair. Some banks may not have filled all of their positions from the internship program and will look to fill in those roles with people like you. http://www.katsonga.com/girlbanker Get, To Become An Investment Banker (The Book) USA: http://amzn.to/2bb5OFH UK: http://amzn.to/2aIoQAx @GirlBanker: https://twitter.com/#!/GirlBanker

http://www.katsonga.com/girlbanker Get, To Become An Investment Banker (The Book) USA: http://amzn.to/2bb5OFH UK: http://amzn.to/2aIoQAx @GirlBanker: https://twitter.com/#!/GirlBanker If you have read my book, To Become an Investment Banker, you'll already know that in addition to applying for jobs directly through company websites you can look for job listings through headhunters and recruitment sites. One important thing to remember: although, it might seem more efficient to look for jobs in this way because you are looking at many employers in one go, you should keep two provisos in mind: - Many investment banks only hire experienced hires in this way. For entry level positions and internships many expect you to apply directly through their website. - At the moment, it's an employer's market. There are many highly skilled individuals currently unemployed so in some cases employers will find it more cost efficient not to fill positions through third party recruiters. That said, I recommend using both avenues. Example Usually, an employer will list a job on their website then after a week or so hire a recruitment agent to help them fill that role. My friend who is currently looking for a job in a hedge fund was told this by a headhunter: after seeing a job posted on a hedge fund's website the recruiter approached the hedge fund to see if they needed help filling that role. The answer: "We put that job up four days ago and have so far already received 600 applications". That my friend, is the current market for jobs and Girl Banker® is here to help you navigate it. http://www.katsonga.com/girlbanker Get, To Become An Investment Banker (The Book) USA: http://amzn.to/2bb5OFH UK: http://amzn.to/2aIoQAx @GirlBanker: https://twitter.com/#!/GirlBanker

Understanding Short Selling | by Wall Street Survivor

What is short selling? Join our March Trading Contest for your chance at over $8000 in prizes: https://app.wallstreetsurvivor.com/registerto/MarchMarketMoversReport?utm_source=MarketMoversReport&utm_medium=Email&utm_campaign=MarchContest Most people think of investing as buying a stock (or other asset) and making money when its price goes up - but it’s also possible to make a profit when a stock price goes down. This process is called short selling (or shorting). Short selling isn’t all peaches and cream. There are opportunities for high returns, but as usual, these come with high risks. The big risk here is that there is no limit to your losses. When you buy a stock, you can only lose the amount that you invested. But when you short, your losses are infinite because there is theoretically no end to how high a stock’s price can rise. Short selling isn’t for everyone. It requires a lot of time and research, and a desire for high risks and high returns. Short selling is primarily used for speculator looking to make a profit when the market goes down or investing looking to hedge their position. Asset Management: Industry Overview and Careers in Asset Management

04:45
Asset Management: Industry overview and Careers in Asset Management Asset Management is about managing clients’ investments and providing them with the strategies and expertise that would allow them to achieve their goals and secure their financial future. This video is part of our series dedicated to the different sub-industries in the world of Business & Finance. Our goal is to understand how it functions, what type of services it offers its clients, which are the major players in the field and what it is like to do this for a living. An individual or an institution is likely to approach an asset management firm when their investment income is substantial. In such cases, asset managers are able to offer expertise across a wide spectrum of asset classes (such as stocks, bonds, commodities, real estate, private equity, etc). Moreover, large firms have branches all over the world and are therefore able to offer geographical expertise as well. Given that asset managers closely follow all of these markets, they are able to offer high-quality advice and superior risk-return investments. The large players in the asset management industry are indeed very large. There are several companies whose assets under management exceed $1 trillion. Some of them are pure investment funds (BlackRock, Vanguard, StateStreet, Fidelity), while others are arms of the large banking conglomerates (Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank, UBS, BNP). The largest firm in the world in terms of assets under management in 2015 was BlackRock. 04 - What is leverage? - easyMarkets - Education

03:25
For more info visit: Easy Forex - http://www.easy-forex.com/gtw/6255274.aspx When most people think about investing they think that they need large amounts of initial capital in order to start. While this may be the case for stocks, bonds and other investments, forex is much more accessible due to the use of leverage. So how does leverage affect your trading? To explain, think of buying a home. You may want to buy a property that is worth one hundred thousand dollars, so you go to a bank to take out a loan or mortgage. The bank requests that you supply twenty percent of the property as a down payment on your loan. So, for twenty thousand dollars, you are now able to enter into ownership of a one hundred thousand dollar home. This is an illustration of leverage in real estate. You have bought the home at a leverage of five to one, since twenty thousand dollars is one fifth of one hundred thousand dollars. One year later the property market has appreciated by fifty percent and you decide to sell the property for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, making a fifty thousand dollar profit. If you had not taken out a bank loan and had used only your twenty thousand dollars to buy a small studio which cost that amount, your total profit after a fifty percent property price increase would have been only ten thousand dollars. Your five to one leverage has allowed you to earn five times more than you would have if you had traded without leverage. Let's see how we can apply leverage to a forex deal. You currently have one thousand Euros to invest and you decide to buy one hundred thousand EUR worth of EUR/USD, at a rate of one point thirty-one thirty. Since one thousand is one hundredth of one hundred thousand, you are using a leverage of one hundred to one. The EUR/USD rate then moves up to one point thirty-one forty and you decide to close your deal, making a ten pip profit. Using the pip formula from the 'What is a pip video,' you can calculate that your total profit is one hundred dollars. If you had not traded with leverage you would have only made a one dollar profit. In fact, depending on your account type and risk preference, you can trade much smaller or larger deal sizes, and use different levels of leverage. It is important that you keep in mind that higher leverage can increase your potential profits, but it can also lead to bigger potential losses. Due to this risk, we encourage traders to plan their trades well by making sure they employ a risk management strategy and keep learning about the market. To improve your trading skills further, you can visit the Learn section of our website where you can explore the rest of our educational tools such as our eBook, and sign up for our online webinars

Investment Banking, Finance and Consulting Careers Advice for Students and Graduates (Afzal Hussein)

Careers can be tricky. I want to change that. I create videos on helping students and graduates secure the best career opportunities at the best organisations. My videos mostly focus on hints, tips, advice and insights which otherwise might be rare to come across. I graduated in 2014 having studied Economics and Finance in London. During my time at university I secured insight weeks and internships at Goldman Sachs, BlackRock, RBS, PwC and EDF Trading as well as having spent time with many other organisations across the city. After graduating I spent 4 years working in sales at Goldman Sachs Asset Management and ended up leaving the world of investment banking in order to pursue my passions for entrepreneurship, public speaking and social mobility. I also run a career consulting start-up called CV Doctor (www.officialcvdoctor.com). If you ever want to get in touch, please drop me a DM on Instagram – I try hard to reply to all the messages that come through. Peace! Graduate Recruitment Process - Investment Banking

02:13
http://www.katsonga.com/girlbanker Get, To Become An Investment Banker (The Book) USA: http://amzn.to/2bb5OFH UK: http://amzn.to/2aIoQAx @GirlBanker: https://twitter.com/#!/GirlBanker This is a very popular question amongst students who want to become investment bankers. The process is very similar across different investment banks and works as follows: http://www.katsonga.com/girlbanker/how-does-the-graduate-recruitment-process-work-for-investment-banks Note: The proportion of interns offered full-time contracts varies from year to year and from bank to bank; it is never 100%. Usually banks will recruit a few more people from outside the summer program but at the moment many are not doing this; banks are selecting the best summer interns and that's it so getting an internship is critical to becoming an investment banker. If you've interned but have not secured a full-time job, you will have a better chance of securing an alternative entry-level position than if you hadn't interned at all, so do not despair. Some banks may not have filled all of their positions from the internship program and will look to fill in those roles with people like you.

February’s higher than expected wage data highlighted concerns on both the level of inflation as well as the Fed’s reaction function. This translated into both higher yields and higher volatility. Yields in the US rose significantly, making the US one of the worst performing bond markets. Performance within spread sectors was mixed as investment grade corporate credit and agency mortgages posted negative excess returns while local Emerging Markets posted positive excess returns. The Fund was positioned well to navigate this volatility in markets and outperformed its benchmark during the quarter. A combination of yield curve, country and currency positioning led much of the outperformance. The Fund benefited from having a lower duration exposure than the index in places like the US, UK and Canada, where yields were rising. We also benefited from overweight positions in Portugal, Spain and South Africa, where yields fell during the quarter. The Fund is well positioned to capitalize on opportunities if volatility persists in markets. On a sector basis, we continue to maintain overweight positions in Emerging Market Debt, inflation-linked bonds and investment grade corporate bonds. The overweights are offset by underweight positions in Developed market sovereigns and US agency mortgage backed securities. While the Fund has been underweight duration relative to the index, we have been looking for opportunities to cover some of that short position as rates have risen closer to fair value. The Fund’s currency strategy is centered on a core short US dollar position. However, we also see value in a number of relative value currency pairs like being long Scandinavian currencies against the Euro and being long the Japanese Yen vs. other Asian currencies. Going forward, we think headwinds are likely to persist for fixed income markets. A renormalization of monetary policy in the US, UK and Canada is likely to continue over the next few quarters. It is important to note, though, that the pace of that renormalization is likely to be quite slow and while rates will be rising from current levels, they will still remain low on a historical basis. Despite the net decline in US equity prices and rise in volatility, financial conditions remain accommodative. This is an environment which we think will reward active managers like ourselves, offering many relative value opportunities within countries and sectors.
