http://www.food-safety-training.net Level 3 Award in Food Safety Catering - Courses in food hygiene - Level 3 Award in Food Safety Washing facilities It is a legal requirement for all food businesses to have hand washing facilities. Hand washing facilities must be for hand washing only and have adequate access for staff to wash their hands. The hand wash sinks must have hot and cold running water, soap and drying facilities. It is also recommended, although not a legal requirement, to have separate food and equipment sinks with hot and cold running water. Legislation UK food legislation includes: The food safety act 1990 The food hygiene, England, regulations 2006 EC 852/2004 regulation on the hygiene of foodstuffs Since 2004 the Food Safety Act has become more concentrated on food quality rather than food safety. If any of the laws of broken, an individual or business can be prosecuted. Food safety is covered under criminal law which involves being prosecuted in either a Magistrate or Crown court. The Magistrate court deals with less serious offences, termed summary offences, whilst the Crown Court deals with more serious offences, termed indictable offences. Penalties in the Crown Court include an unlimited fine and/or imprisonment of up to 2 years. The penalties in a Magistrate court are £20,000 fine and/or six months imprisonment. The enforcement officers who oversee the legislation are called Environmental Health Practitioners. They: provide food safety advice, and inspect food premises enforce legislation covering food can enter and inspect premises at any reasonable time of the day or night and can be accompanied by the uniformed police can investigate outbreaks of foodborne disease, food poisoning and other possible offences can instruct that food be destroyed if it is considered unsafe to eat can issue improvement and prohibition notices can take food businesses to court for breaking food safety laws can initiate prosecution by gathering evidence. If a company is prosecuted they can provide a due diligence defence. This means that the business can prove that they took all reasonable precautions to prevent contamination and food poisoning. This due diligence defence is achieved with the use of written records. The written records are called the Food Safety Management System, which is a collection of records, procedures and all information regarding running the food business safely. The information includes some of the following: • training records • suppliers audits • pest control documentation • cleaning schedules • temperature records • maintenance contracts There are legal requirements that apply to food handlers and these include: • keeping themselves clean • ensuring the workplace remains clean • to protect food from contamination or anything that cause harm to it • following good personal hygiene practices such as hand washing and regular bathing or showering • wearing clean protective clothing • informing their employer if they are suffering from food poisoning and foodborne illness. http://www.food-safety-training.net

The Co-operative Food Store - Shipston on Stour - NOT so good with food

02:42
As a responsible citizen I felt that it was in the public interest to view the food currently on sale in the Co-operative food store in Shipston on Stour. I hope this company now take urgent action. Much of the chilled food on sale at the time of this video was three times the recommended temperature. Selling fresh meat at 10 degrees centigrade and salad at 20 degrees is not healthy for anyone and arguably against Health and safety laws. Whether you want a new supermarket or not in this very beautiful town is not the intention of this video. It is to demonstrate that immediate action is required and as it stands the current store that we have (the ex Somerfield Co-operative is not doing one single soul of this town any favors. The staff are mainly helpful and friendly. It's just a shame that the conditions are so terrible. The store should be closed immediately until it is safe to sell food again. Current EU regulations on cooling of foods are now contained within EC Regulation 852/2004, Annex II, Chapter IX, part 5 and 6 respectively. I hope the Co-operative can work with the community of the town and the Health and Safety executive to address the immediate concerns and in the long term a solution found to move the current supermarket in to a more suitable location, whether that be in or out of the town centre. The observations were : Packet of ham was almost exploding as it was far too hot. Fridge stated 10 degrees. It was more like 15+. Along the other side there was a chicken that looked as though it had just been thrown on the floor and put back on the shelf. There was a packet of mince in a similar state to the ham in a separate cooler. That stated 8 degrees but again felt much warmer. There were general spillages on the floor. Finally the salad cooler was above 20 degrees. All salad looked like it had sen better days. The mushrooms were completely discolored and the peppers were wrinkled up... In the Co-op's deffence I believe this store is a troublesome example that they inherited from Somerfield and not the normal standard as most other co-op's do have a high standard... But this one really does let the company down...

Food security

01:00:32
Food security is a condition related to the ongoing availability of food. Concerns over food security have existed throughout history. There is evidence of granaries being in use over 10,000 years ago, with central authorities in civilizations including Ancient China and Ancient Egypt being known to release food from storage in times of famine. Yet it was only at the 1974 World Food Conference that the term 'food security' was established as a formal concept. Originally, food security was understood to apply at the national level, with a state being food secure when there was sufficient food to "sustain a steady expansion of food consumption and to offset fluctuations in production and prices". A new definition emerged at 1996 World Food Summit; this time with the emphasis being on individuals enjoying food security, rather than the nation. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), food security "exists when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life". Household food security exists when all members, at all times, have access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Individuals who are food secure do not live in hunger or fear of starvation. Food insecurity, on the other hand, is a situation of "limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways", according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Food security incorporates a measure of resilience to future disruption or unavailability of critical food supply due to various risk factors including droughts, shipping disruptions, fuel shortages, economic instability, and wars. In the years 2011-2013, an estimated 842 million people were suffering from chronic hunger. The FAO identified the four pillars of food security as availability, access, utilization, and stability. The United Nations (UN) recognized the Right to food in the Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, and has since noted that it is vital for the enjoyment of all other rights. SUMMARY ======= The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, commonly known as the United Kingdom (UK) or Britain, is a sovereign country lying off the north-western coast of the European mainland. The United Kingdom includes the island of Great Britain, the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland and many smaller islands. Northern Ireland is the only part of the United Kingdom that shares a land border with another sovereign state‍—‌the Republic of Ireland. Apart from this land border, the United Kingdom is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, with the North Sea to its east, the English Channel to its south and the Celtic Sea to its south-south-west, giving it the 12th-longest coastline in the world. The Irish Sea lies between Great Britain and Ireland. With an area of 242,500 square kilometres (93,600 sq mi), the United Kingdom is the 78th-largest sovereign state in the world. It is also the 22nd-most populous country, with an estimated 66.0 million inhabitants in 2017. The sovereign state is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. The monarch is Queen Elizabeth II, who has reigned since 1952, making her the longest-serving current head of state. The United Kingdom's capital and largest city is London, a global city and financial centre with an urban area population of 10.3 million. Other major urban areas in the UK include the conurbations centred on Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds, Glasgow and Liverpool. The United Kingdom consists of four countries: England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Their capitals are London, Belfast, Edinburgh, and Cardiff respectively. Apart from England, the countries have devolved administrations, each with varying powers. The nearby Isle of Man, Bailiwick of Guernsey and Bailiwick of Jersey are not part of the UK, being Crown dependencies with the British Government responsible for defence and international representation. The medieval conquest and subsequent annexation of Wales by the Kingdom of England, followed by the union between England and Scotland in 1707 to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, and the union in 1801 of Great Britain with the Kingdom of Ireland created the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. Five-sixths of Ireland seceded from the UK in 1922, leaving the present formulation of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. There are fourteen British Overseas Territories, the remnants of the British Empire which, at its height in the 1920s, encompassed almost a quarter of the world's land mass and was the largest empire in history. British influence can be observed in the language, culture and legal systems of many of its former colonies. The United Kingdom is a developed country and has the world's fifth-largest economy by nominal GDP and ninth-largest economy by purchasing power parity. It has a high-income economy and has a very high Human Development Index, ranking 14th in the world. It was the world's first industrialised country and the world's foremost power during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The United Kingdom remains a great power with considerable economic, cultural, military, scientific and political influence internationally. It is a recognised nuclear weapons state and is sixth in military expenditure in the world. It has been a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council since its first session in 1946. It has been a leading member state of the European Union (EU) and its predecessor, the European Economic Community (EEC), since 1973; however, a referendum in 2016 resulted in 51.9% of UK voters favouring leaving the European Union, and the country's exit is being negotiated. The United Kingdom is also a member of the Commonwealth of Nations, the Council of Europe, the G7, the G20, NATO, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Interpol and the World Trade Organization (WTO).
