Robert Merton - Option Pricing Model

08:36
His first professional association with a hedge fund came in 1968. His advisor at the time, Paul Samuelson, brought him on board Arbitrage Management Company (AMC), to join founder Michael Goodkin and chief executive Harry Markowitz. AMC is the first known attempt at computerized arbitrage trading. After a successful run as a private hedge fund, AMC was sold to Stuart & Co. in 1971.[5] In 1993, Merton co-founded a hedge fund, Long-Term Capital Management, which earned high returns for four years but later lost $4.6 billion in 1998 and was bailed out by a consortium of banks and closed out in early 2000. Merton’s research focuses on finance theory including lifecycle finance, optimal intertemporal portfolio selection, capital asset pricing, pricing of options, risky corporate debt, loan guarantees, and other complex derivative securities.

[Robert C. Merton / World Knowledge Forum]Transit for the Future of Wealth Management

04:20
[Transit for the Future of Wealth Management] Aging without preparation is a catastrophe not a blessing. As the era of aging population genuinely begins, the need for investment strategies for affluent aged life is becoming very crucial. To expect a positive outcome from an investment in one’s later years, bearing a possible threat is a fate of investors. Because of such reason, increasing the investment earning rate over dangers has been deemed as a long-time assignment for the field of financial management. A traditional strategy for profit growth is a diversified investment. This approach is to reduce the risk of eggs being broken by separating them from each other, instead of putting them together in a single container. On the other hand, as the proportion of passive fund is becoming higher whereas active fund decreases, the possible influence on the market is becoming more worrisome. Furthermore, the fact that the number of aged people, whom possesses relatively strong finance, is rising brings about a pressure on interest rates. Likewise, Professor Robert Merton, a Novel Prize winner in economics, and Donghyun An, president of Korea Capital Market Institute and expert of the investment theory, will discuss variety of risks investors face to find out a solution. Robert C. Merton is the School of Management Distinguished Professor of Finance at the MIT Sloan School of Management and the John and Natty McArthur University Professor Emeritus at Harvard University. He is currently Resident Scientist at Dimensional Holdings, Inc., where he is the creator of Target Retirement Solution, a global integrated retirement-funding solution system. Merton received numerous awards including the Alfred Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences in 1997 for a new method to determine the value of derivatives. Merton’s research focuses on finance theory, including lifecycle and retirement finance, optimal portfolio selection, capital asset pricing, pricing of derivative securities, credit risk, loan guarantees, financial innovation, the dynamics of institutional change, and improving the methods of measuring and managing macro-financial risk. 01:12:41
Systemic Risk Measures for the Financial System: A Finance Approach Macro financial systemic risk poses an enormous challenge for both governments and financial institutions. The increasing globalization of the financial system with ever greater connectedness among institutions and sovereigns, while surely a positive for economic development and growth, does increase the potential impact of systemic risk propagation across geopolitical borders, making its control and repairing the damage caused a more complex and longer process. As we have seen, the impact of realized systemic risk can be devastating for entire economies. The Financial Crisis of 2008-2009 and the subsequent European Debt Crisis were centred around credit risk of financial institutions and sovereigns, and their interactions. A new class of tools to measure credit-risk connectedness and its dynamic changes are presented using finance science, network theory and econometric techniques.
