Social Network Analysis for Knowledge Management

03:32
In an interview with Alakh Asthana of eClerx Services, Verna Allee talks about social network analysis (SNA) and the impact of SNA on knowledge management (KM). Verna starts off by explaining that while SNA has been around since the 1930's, it's only in the last few years that an increasing number of organizations have started using SNA graphs to identify individual connectors and knowledge flows facilitated by people. Knowledge management has successfully adopted SNA for identifying experts and quick decision making. Verna recommends books in the area of SNA by Rob Cross and Patti Anklam, who have done substantial amount of work in the area organizational network analysis. On the implementation front, Verna advises that just because an employee is well networked, he / she should not be judged as a better or worse employee. She cautions that companies are often inclined to use social network graphs for performance evaluation and that is potentially a very dangerous thing to do. Verna sums up the interview by highlighting two key uses of SNA - help locate expertise and understand knowledge flows.

The Sociological Science Behind Social Networks and Social Influence. Nicholas Christakis, Professor of Medical Sociology, Medicine, and Sociology at Harvard University If you think you're in complete control of your destiny or even your own actions, you're wrong. Every choice you make, every behavior you exhibit, and even every desire you have finds its roots in the social universe. Nicholas Christakis explains why individual actions are inextricably linked to sociological pressures; whether you're absorbing altruism performed by someone you'll never meet or deciding to jump off the Golden Gate Bridge, collective phenomena affect every aspect of your life. By the end of the lecture Christakis has revealed a startling new way to understand the world that ranks sociology as one of the most vitally important social sciences. 01:05:28
A follow-on to Analyzing Social Networks on Twitter, this webcast will concentrate on the social component of Twitter data rather then the questions of data gathering and decomposition. Using a predefined dataset, we will attempt to find communities of people on Twitter that express particular interests. We will also mine Twitter streams for cascades of information diffusion, and determine most influential individuals in these cascades. The webcast will contain an initial introduction to Social Network Analysis methods and metrics. Qualitative analysis of interview data: A step-by-step guide

06:51
The content applies to qualitative data analysis in general. Do not forget to share this Youtube link with your friends. The steps are also described in writing below (Click Show more): STEP 1, reading the transcripts 1.1. Browse through all transcripts, as a whole. 1.2. Make notes about your impressions. 1.3. Read the transcripts again, one by one. 1.4. Read very carefully, line by line. STEP 2, labeling relevant pieces 2.1. Label relevant words, phrases, sentences, or sections. 2.2. Labels can be about actions, activities, concepts, differences, opinions, processes, or whatever you think is relevant. 2.3. You might decide that something is relevant to code because: *it is repeated in several places; *the interviewee explicitly states that it is important; *you have read about something similar in reports, e.g. scientific articles; *it reminds you of a theory or a concept; *or for some other reason that you think is relevant. You can use preconceived theories and concepts, be open-minded, aim for a description of things that are superficial, or aim for a conceptualization of underlying patterns. It is all up to you. It is your study and your choice of methodology. You are the interpreter and these phenomena are highlighted because you consider them important. Just make sure that you tell your reader about your methodology, under the heading Method. Be unbiased, stay close to the data, i.e. the transcripts, and do not hesitate to code plenty of phenomena. You can have lots of codes, even hundreds. STEP 3, decide which codes are the most important, and create categories by bringing several codes together 3.1. Go through all the codes created in the previous step. Read them, with a pen in your hand. 3.2. You can create new codes by combining two or more codes. 3.3. You do not have to use all the codes that you created in the previous step. 3.4. In fact, many of these initial codes can now be dropped. 3.5. Keep the codes that you think are important and group them together in the way you want. 3.6. Create categories. (You can call them themes if you want.) 3.7. The categories do not have to be of the same type. They can be about objects, processes, differences, or whatever. 3.8. Be unbiased, creative and open-minded. 3.9. Your work now, compared to the previous steps, is on a more general, abstract level. You are conceptualizing your data. STEP 4, label categories and decide which are the most relevant and how they are connected to each other 4.1. Label the categories. Here are some examples: Adaptation (Category) Updating rulebook (sub-category) Changing schedule (sub-category) New routines (sub-category) Seeking information (Category) Talking to colleagues (sub-category) Reading journals (sub-category) Attending meetings (sub-category) Problem solving (Category) Locate and fix problems fast (sub-category) Quick alarm systems (sub-category) 4.2. Describe the connections between them. 4.3. The categories and the connections are the main result of your study. It is new knowledge about the world, from the perspective of the participants in your study. STEP 5, some options 5.1. Decide if there is a hierarchy among the categories. 5.2. Decide if one category is more important than the other. 5.3. Draw a figure to summarize your results. STEP 6, write up your results 6.1. Under the heading Results, describe the categories and how they are connected. Use a neutral voice, and do not interpret your results. 6.2. Under the heading Discussion, write out your interpretations and discuss your results. Interpret the results in light of, for example: *results from similar, previous studies published in relevant scientific journals; *theories or concepts from your field; *other relevant aspects. STEP 7 Ending remark Nb: it is also OK not to divide the data into segments. Narrative analysis of interview transcripts, for example, does not rely on the fragmentation of the interview data. (Narrative analysis is not discussed in this tutorial.) Further, I have assumed that your task is to make sense of a lot of unstructured data, i.e. that you have qualitative data in the form of interview transcripts. However, remember that most of the things I have said in this tutorial are basic, and also apply to qualitative analysis in general. You can use the steps described in this tutorial to analyze: *notes from participatory observations; *documents; *web pages; *or other types of qualitative data. STEP 8 Suggested reading Alan Bryman's book: 'Social Research Methods' published by Oxford University Press. Steinar Kvale's and Svend Brinkmann's book 'InterViews: Learning the Craft of Qualitative Research Interviewing' published by SAGE. Text and video (including audio) © Kent Löfgren, Sweden

Statistical Text Analysis for Social Science

01:04:01
What can text analysis tell us about society? Corpora of news, books, and social media encode human beliefs and culture. But it is impossible for a researcher to read all of today's rapidly growing text archives. My research develops statistical text analysis methods that measure social phenomena from textual content, especially in news and social media data. For example: How do changes to public opinion appear in microblogs? What topics get censored in the Chinese Internet? What character archetypes recur in movie plots? How do geography and ethnicity affect the diffusion of new language? In order to answer these questions effectively, we must apply and develop scientific methods in statistics, computation, and linguistics. In this talk I will illustrate these methods in a project that analyzes events in international politics. Political scientists are interested in studying international relations through *event data*: time series records of who did what to whom, as described in news articles. To address this event extraction problem, we develop an unsupervised Bayesian model of semantic event classes, which learns the verbs and textual descriptions that correspond to types of diplomatic and military interactions between countries. The model uses dynamic logistic normal priors to drive the learning of semantic classes; but unlike a topic model, it leverages deeper linguistic analysis of syntactic argument structure. Using a corpus of several million news articles over 15 years, we quantitatively evaluate how well its event types match ones defined by experts in previous work, and how well its inferences about countries correspond to real-world conflict. The method also supports exploratory analysis; for example, of the recent history of Israeli-Palestinian relations.

This market trading analysis applies to various exchanges, including Bitmex and Binance. Tackling questions like if Bitcoin can reach 20k again and if we will be seeing a crypto currency market recovery this year. Things like the lightning network have provided huge improvements for BTC and while it is true that others like Roger Ver with Bitcoin Cash (bcash) may disagree, I do see these blockchain technology innovations to be very bullish fundamental signs for the space. Social Network News

47:19
In this presentation Pablo Boczkowski will share preliminary results of an ongoing study of how young people (18-29 years of age) consume news on social media. Drawing upon survey and interview data, he will shed light on: a) the growing importance of the incidental access to information; b) the technological, demographic, and structural determinants of this phenomenon; and c) the dynamics of its experiential dimension. He will conclude by reflecting on what these findings mean for the ties that connect media, technology, and society in the digital age. About the speakers Pablo Boczkowski Affiliation: Department of Communication Studies Northwestern University Pablo J. Boczkowski (Ph.D., Cornell University, 2001) is Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Northwestern University and Co-Director of the Center for the Study of Media and Society in Argentina. His research program examines the transformation of print culture in the digital age. He’s has authored three books; co-edited another three volumes; and written over twenty-five journal articles, twenty book chapters, and seventy-five conference presentations.

What is COMPLEX NETWORK? What does COMPLEX NETWORK mean? COMPLEX NETWORK meaning & explanation

09:29
What is COMPLEX NETWORK? What does COMPLEX NETWORK mean? COMPLEX NETWORK meaning - COMPLEX NETWORK definition - COMPLEX NETWORK explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. In the context of network theory, a complex network is a graph (network) with non-trivial topological features—features that do not occur in simple networks such as lattices or random graphs but often occur in graphs modelling of real systems. The study of complex networks is a young and active area of scientific research (since 2000) inspired largely by the empirical study of real-world networks such as computer networks, technological networks, brain networks and social networks. Most social, biological, and technological networks display substantial non-trivial topological features, with patterns of connection between their elements that are neither purely regular nor purely random. Such features include a heavy tail in the degree distribution, a high clustering coefficient, assortativity or disassortativity among vertices, community structure, and hierarchical structure. In the case of directed networks these features also include reciprocity, triad significance profile and other features. In contrast, many of the mathematical models of networks that have been studied in the past, such as lattices and random graphs, do not show these features. The most complex structures can be realized by networks with a medium number of interactions. This corresponds to the fact that the maximum information content (entropy) is obtained for medium probabilities. Two well-known and much studied classes of complex networks are scale-free networks and small-world networks, whose discovery and definition are canonical case-studies in the field. Both are characterized by specific structural features—power-law degree distributions for the former and short path lengths and high clustering for the latter. However, as the study of complex networks has continued to grow in importance and popularity, many other aspects of network structure have attracted attention as well. Recently, the study of complex networks has been expanded to networks of networks. If those networks are interdependent, they become significantly more vulnerable to random failures and targeted attacks and exhibit cascading failures and first-order percolation transitions. Furthermore, the collective behavior of a network in the presence of nodes failure and recovery has been studied. it was found that such a network can have spontaneous failures and spontaneous recoveries. The field continues to develop at a brisk pace, and has brought together researchers from many areas including mathematics, physics, biology, climate, computer science, sociology, epidemiology, and others. Ideas from network science and engineering have been applied to the analysis of metabolic and genetic regulatory networks; the modeling and design of scalable communication networks such as the generation and visualization of complex wireless networks; the development of vaccination strategies for the control of disease; and a broad range of other practical issues. Research on networks are regularly published in the most visible scientific journals and obtain vigorous funding in many countries. Network theory was found recently useful to identify bottlenecks in city traffic. Network science is the topic of many conferences in a variety of different fields, and has been the subject of numerous books both for the lay person and for the expert. A network is named scale-free if its degree distribution, i.e., the probability that a node selected uniformly at random has a certain number of links (degree), follows a particular mathematical function called a power law. The power law implies that the degree distribution of these networks has no characteristic scale. In contrast, networks with a single well-defined scale are somewhat similar to a lattice in that every node has (roughly) the same degree. Examples of networks with a single scale include the Erdős–Rényi (ER) random graph and hypercubes. In a network with a scale-free degree distribution, some vertices have a degree that is orders of magnitude larger than the average - these vertices are often called "hubs", although this is a bit misleading as there is no inherent threshold above which a node can be viewed as a hub. If there were such a threshold, the network would not be scale-free.
