The earlier you start investing, the sooner you can make mistakes and learn from them, and you have a higher risk tolerance. Qatar confirms billions of UK investment

04:17
(27 Mar 2017) LEADIN: Qatar's finance minister has announced an additional 5 billion pounds (6.3 billion US dollars) in investment in the UK. Ali Shareef Al Emadi is in London attending a forum to promote business between the two countries. STORYLINE: The conference room at the Grosvenor House Hotel is packed for the Qatar-UK Business and Investment Forum. More than 400 British and Qatari business leaders and senior politicians are attending the event. The Qatari delegation is led by Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser bin Khalifa Al Thani, Prime Minister of Qatar. It's a sign of just how important business is between these two nations - bilateral trade is valued at 5 billion pounds (6.3 billion US dollars) a year. Qatar already has 35 billion pounds (44 billion US dollars) of existing investment in the UK. And the country's finance minister has announced that will increase by an extra 5 billion (6.3 billion US dollars) over the next three to five years. "We're looking at the UK as one of our top 10 trading partners," says Ali Shareef Al Emadi. "I think the track record for both countries is extremely positive and well received. If you look at what we've done 10, 15 years in the UK it's been an absolutely great story for us." And British companies have huge investments in Qatar too. In 2015, UK exports to the Gulf country totalled 2.6 billion pounds (3.3 billion US dollars). El Amadi says British companies have done "extremely well" in Qatar's hydrocarbon sector, but believes there are also opportunities in infrastructure, technology, health and sport sectors. UK trade is likely to undergo massive change as it negotiates its exit from the European Union. Exports of goods and services currently account for about 27 percent of the British economy, with almost half of exports going to the EU. While some warn Brexit could harm British business, Secretary of State for International Trade Liam Fox believes it's a chance to look "beyond the boundaries" of Europe. "This of course means forging new ties and building new relationships with other nations. But perhaps more importantly, to strengthening our commitment to our oldest friends and allies. Qatar is one of the most valued of these," he tells the forum. Big brands like Qatar Airways are represented at the forum. And Qatar is heavily invested in British companies too - high end retailer Harrods, Barclays Bank and the iconic London skyscraper The Shard have all received backing. Private company Al Sawari Holdings has long had a presence in the UK. It has business in a range of industries including real estate, hospitality, construction and manufacturing. Its chairman Sheikh Turki Bin Faisal Al Thani explains why Britain is such an attractive place to invest. "It's a very stable market, it's resistant to change. At the same time, it's a diversified market and for us it's also an international hub," he says. "Our presence here exposes us to more international companies, allows us to develop a stronger network, to even get opportunities to be a part of business outside the UK, through the UK." And he's cautiously optimistic about post-Brexit Britain. "Every country has a period of up and down. But we've been with the UK for many years now and I don't think this will change," he says. "Our investments are always long term so even though we can expect a bit of a dip in the coming years, that's not our vision, our vision is to look in the next 30 years." Warren Edward Buffett (born August 30, 1930) is an American investor, business magnate, and philanthropist. He is considered by some to be one of the most successful investors in the world, and as of February 2017 is the second wealthiest person in the United States with a total net worth of $76.9 billion. Born in Omaha, Buffet developed an interest in investing in his youth, eventually entering the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1947 before transferring and graduating from University of Nebraska–Lincoln. After graduating at 19, Buffet enrolled at Columbia Business School of Columbia University, learning and eventually creating his investment philosophy around a concept pioneered by Benjamin Graham–value investing. He attended New York Institute of Finance to specialize his economics background and soon after began various business partnerships, including one with Graham. After meeting Charlie Munger, Buffet created the Buffett Partnership. His firm would eventually acquire a textile manufacturing firm called Berkshire Hathaway and assume its name to create a diversified holding company. Buffet has been the chairman and largest shareholder of Berkshire Hathaway since 1970, and his business exploits have had him referred to as the "Wizard", "Oracle" or "Sage" of Omaha by global media outlets. He is noted for his adherence to value investing and for his personal frugality despite his immense wealth. Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Warren_Buffett

THE UK’s NUMBER 1 FIXED INCOME SECURED BOND INVESTMENT

02:11
Investors capital protection has been put at the forefront when designing this bond to insure against the risk of capital loss. With this in mind an insurance policy guarantees at all times investors’ capital from risks of loss. This insurance policy has been specifically tailored to the bond providers exacting trading model. For the first time, access is offered at a low entry level of £5,000 to a low risk fully capital protected trading platform, which previously was only available to large financial institutions with tens of millions of capital. This is done through the bond issuers long-standing relationships with fund managers, traders and professionals at the highest level within the financial sector, which are not available to retail investors. Profits are generated in a low risk manner by buying and selling securities through a well-known method called arbitrage. Arbitrage is the simultaneous purchase and sale of an asset, in order to profit from the price differences between a seller and a buyer of financial instruments. These transactions will only take place if they have been pre-sold at a profit prior to purchase, with a contract binding the purchaser to complete, removing any risk for the investor. This fixed income investment market accounts for trillions of pounds every year through the world’s financial institutions, which until now was previously a closed market for private individuals. All subscriptions into the bond will be received by a regulated payments services provider (Security Trustee) in the UK. They are then placed directly by this FCA regulated company into the chosen trades with a first charge over the contract. The security trustee will then hold profits in an independent designated deposit account account which is known as a sinking fund. This means that all bond subscriptions and profits are ring-fenced and secure. Should you require access to your money quickly this can be done in writing with funds received in 30 days. This is subject to receiving 95% of the bonds nominal value. This can now be accessed through an exclusive bond only available through Protected Capital. EXCLUSIVELY AVAILABLE ONLY FROM PROTECTED CAPITAL

Passive Investing: The Evidence the Fund Management Industry Would Prefer You Not to See

53:54
http://sensibleinvesting.tv -- the independent voice of passive investing A remarkable 54-minute film featuring some of the world's top economists and academics and demonstrating: * how the claims of active fund managers to be able to beat the market are largely a myth * how costs are the biggest drag on performance - and why active costs more * how passive investing offers the best experience for the vast majority of investors * the benefits of a diversified portfolio in guaranteeing consistent returns * why passive investing is better for your health * why active investing has held sway for so many years.... * ... but why things may be changing * and why passive is the rational, mathematically proven route to investing success. Investing for the future... It's an issue none of can afford to ignore. No one's job is safe these days... How would you cope if you lost yours? We're all living longer too... So are you saving enough to fund 25 years or more of retirement? Can you really afford to pay for your children or grandchildren to go to university - or help them onto the property ladder? And what about all those holidays you promised yourself? We entrust the vast bulk of our investments to fund managers. Here in the UK, according to Her Majesty's Treasury, the industry has more than four TRILLION pounds of investors' money under management. Fund managers invest people's savings wherever they see fit - mainly in equities, or shares in listed companies. They claim to be experts at making our making grow, using their expert knowledge to pick the shares that will outperform the market. But all too often the returns they produce are considerably lower than the average return of a benchmark index like the FTSE 100 - or the S&P 500 in the States. For veteran investment guru John Bogle, the problem is simple. Fund managers just aren't as smart as they like to think they are. As it means trading against the view of numerous market participants with superior information, buying or selling a security is effectively just a bet. So, whilst your fund manager might lead you to believe it's his knowledge or intelligence that enables you to beat the market, he's really no better than a gambler. So, you might be lucky enough to choose the right fund manager. But you could just as easily pick the wrong one. According to the financial services company Bestinvest, there are currently nearly £10 billion of UK investors' money languishing in what it calls dog funds - in other words, funds which have underperperformed their benchmark index for at least three consecutive years. Ultimately, of course, fund managers are businesses. They exist to make money for themselves. They want our business - even if it means persuading us to invest in a fund which they themselves wouldn't want to put their own money in. It's now time to look at what it actually costs us to invest. Fund managers are, of course, businesses. And, like all business, they have overheads. Running a big fund management company doesn't come cheap - esepcially when top managers earn around £2 million a year, including bonuses. And remember, it's you, the customer, who picks up the tab. Ultimately, though, fund managers need to make a profit. In fact they'e making around £10 billion from us every year - and that's regardless of whether or not they manage to produce a profit for us. Part of the challenge is working out exactly what we are being charged. Investors typically use something called the annual Total Expense Ratio, or TER, to compare the cost of investing in different funds. But, the TER excludes dealing commission, stamp duty and other turnover costs that can add considerably to the expense of investing over time. So, apart from those hidden charges, what else are we having to pay? More importantly, what sort of impact do charges have on the value of our investments? And the bad news doesn't stop there. Despite a marked increase in competition, management charges in the UK have been steadily rising over the last ten years. There are some encouraging signs for consumers. The FSA's Retail Distribution Review will require fund managers to be fairer and more transparent when it comes to charges. In the meantime, investors should be on their guard. Mo Bro's Secure the Largest Investment Of The Series So Far On Dragons Den

14:26
"An Investment milestone for the last two series was fantastic" The entrepreneurial trio from Mo Bro's (https://www.mobros.co.uk) are celebrating after its men’s facial grooming venture was given a major thumbs up on Dragons' Den. And it was quite a milestone for both the BBC2 programme and Mo Bro’s, which is the brainchild of Keval Dattani, Kunal Dattani and Savan Dattani. That’s because the brothers walked away with the biggest investment from the last two series of the show, which sees entrepreneurs pitch for backing from five venture capitalists in exchange for a share in the business. From a number of offers on the table, the trio plumped for Peter Jones CBE and Den newcomer Tej Lelvani, CEO of Vitabiotics, who agreed to invest £150,000 in return for a 20 per cent stake in the firm. Launched three years ago, Mo Bro’s grew from just a £750 investment into a firm with international appeal and a £1.3million turnover. Innovate UK’s Essential Tips on Pitching for Investment for Start-Ups and Small Businesses

02:19
This is Innovate UK’s 2nd installment of the essential selection business tips and advice series. This video covers tips on pitching for investment. Whether a start-up, small business or SME make sure you watch the video and subscribe to our channel for more funding advice. The video outlines and explains the most important factors for a business when trying to pitch to investors and includes actionable advice supported by comments from industry experts and investors. The tips are as follows: 1) Target the right investor for you Starting and running a business takes time and resources. It’s vital you are organised and prioritise what needs to be done. In the case of funding, approaching every potential investor you connect with wastes time. Most start-ups have to pitch to many investors before securing the funds they need. You don’t want to be wasting time on someone whose investment isn’t relevant. 2) Prepare an engaging deck You should have a high quality presentation, based on a good business plan and detailed financial projections. We recommend no more than 8-10 slides and it’s a good idea to accompany it with a 2-3 page summary. Your proposal should be visually stimulating; use charts and images to bring your presentation to life and make sure it’s not too wordy. 3) Sell the upside…And yourself Your presentation will tell the story, but you still have work to do. Focus on selling the quick exit or potential returns and getting people excited about your ability to make it happen. Investors are looking for business opportunities that are disruptive, scalable, have huge benefits and potential. It’s your job to make them believe you can deliver. 4) Follow up after your pitch Immediately follow-up on promised actions after the pitch – including sending any relevant documents. Update potential investors on your progress and let them know about any events or big wins. You can also keep in touch using social media such as posting updates on LinkedIn Check out the Essential guide to securing funding here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fS3An... FinTech Monthly: £108m in UK FinTech investment, Square's UK launch, Monzo news and more

03:30
Welcome to FinTech Monthly, your round up of the past month’s top financial technology news, brought to you by Tech City News and law firm Gowling WLG. This episode, we have £108m in UK FinTech investment, Square's UK launch, Monzo news, smart contracts and more. INVESTMENTS The Tech City News Investment Tracker recorded five rounds raised by UK FinTech companies in the past month totalling more than £108m. Atom Bank kicked off the month of March with an £83m investment. Investors included Spanish bank BBVA, fund manager Neil Woodford and Toscafund Asset Management. Currencycloud, the cross-border payment platform, closed a £20m Series D round from investors including GV, formerly Google Ventures. The company also received funding from existing investors Notion Capital, Sapphire Ventures, Rakuten FinTech Fund and Anthemis. Quantexa Limited raised a $3.3m Series A round led by Albion Ventures and HSBC. Founded in March 2016, the London-based company uses big data analytics to tackle complex financial crime. Other UK FinTech investments include the $1m raised by savings app Oinky, the €1.2m raised by another savings app, Oval Money, and the £7.5m raised by Neyber. SQUARE'S UK LAUNCH Payment company Square launched in the UK enabling independent traders to take card payments with no monthly contracts. This is the fifth country in which Square is available, joining existing markets Canada, Japan, Australia and the US. SMART CONTRACTS Jocelyn Paulley, director at Gowling WLG, joined us earlier to talk about a strong area of FinTech innovation: smart contracts. She said: “Smart contracts, built on blockchain technology, facilitate peer to peer exchanges as their publically available records create trust between individuals, where previously middle-men fulfilled this role for a fee. By removing the middle-men, it becomes feasible to invest and deal with much smaller amounts of capital which would previously have been prohibitive due to the cost of effecting the transaction itself, which opens up financial markets to a whole new category of investors. “Banks are also faced with the huge challenge of maintaining their massive, ageing banking systems, which becomes ever harder and more risky where new functionality is added. Using new technologies like smart contracts on the blockchain gives banks a fresh route to effect payments without needing to rely on those creaky mainframe systems.” MONZO BANKING LICENSE UK challenger bank Monzo had the “restrictions” on its banking licence lifted and plans to start rolling out full current accounts to its pre-paid card and beta app users. Earlier this year, Monzo closed a Series C funding round of £22m. FINTECH WEEK Last week was FinTech Week, a programme of events including the Innovate Finance Global Summit and the Financial Conduct Authority’s International Innovate Seminar. At the government’s first International FinTech Conference, Chancellor Philip Hammond announced Barclays is to open a FinTech accelerator called London Rise, offering over 500 workspaces for startups. That’s all for this roundup. For more FinTech news, check out our website and follow us on Twitter.

According to the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, the UK didn't do as badly as some would expect after listening to all the Brexit doom and gloom being peddled by the Remoaners. And research by European private equity and venture capital trade association Invest Europe shows that investors are also not thinking of holding back either. Firstly, according to the UK Conference on Trade and Development, in the first six months of 2018, the UK has secured more foreign direct investment than all other countries except China. As you can see from the graph the UK gained $65.5 billion in inward investment, approaching the $70.2 billion that China achieved and ahead of the $64.5 into the US and $44.8 billion into the Netherlands. And an Invest Europe survey shows that 62% of investors are more likely to invest in a post Brexit UK, which is up on last year's 31%. Not bad, but do bear in mind that continued uncertainty caused by Remainers' constantly harping on that the UK is no good may hold companies back from mergers and acquisitions, with the proportion of executives saying they will actively pursue M&A over the next year is at a four year low of 45% compared to 65% a year ago reports City AM. And speaking to City AM, Steve Ivermee, EY’s transaction advisory head, said that uncertainty is giving some pause for thought but that it looks like people are temporarily holding back, not actively retreating from M&A. So, overall not a bad picture going forward - I just wish the Remoaners would realise that the UK is going to be just fine and stop doing it down! So, what do you think? Please leave a comment below. Seizing income opportunities in the UK

Negative sentiment towards the UK means there are opportunities to buy UK companies at a discount, says David Smith, Fund Manager of Henderson High Income; and David explains why he thinks Tesco can beat market expectations. Capital at risk, not advice. Past performance is not a guide to future performance. The value of an investment and the income from it can fall as well as rise and you may not get back the amount originally invested. The information in this article does not qualify as an investment recommendation.
