May offers MPs vote on second Brexit referendum

28:47
Theresa May's so-called "new deal" is meant to appeal to MPs on both sides of the House and both sides of the Brexit divide. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) Among the promises if they pass her withdrawal agreement, the chance for MPs to vote on whether to hold another referendum. There were also offers on workers' rights, environmental protection, the Northern Irish border and a customs compromise. But it instantly met a chorus of disapproval from Labour and hardline Brexiteers on the Tory benches. Brexit vote TIE, speaker Bercow steps in...

04:07
BRITAIN faces a Brexit moment of truth today - with a year-long delay on the cards if MPs don't agree to get Britain out of the EU as soon as possible. The House of Commons will tonight vote on the way forward for Brexit - with MPs likely to endorse a much softer form of EU exit than Theresa May wants. The House of Commons will hold a second round of "indicative votes" from 8pm tonight after Mrs May's deal was defeated for the third time last week. They will cast votes on three or four different options - likely to include the customs union, single market, a second referendum and cancelling Brexit altogether... Brexit: British PM May's revised deal rejected by Parliament

06:19
Britain’s parliament rejected Prime Minister Theresa May’s European Union divorce deal for a second time on Tuesday, deepening the country’s worst political crisis for generations, 17 days before the planned departure date. Lawmakers voted against May’s amended Brexit deal by 391 to 242 as her last-minute talks with EU chiefs on Monday to assuage her critics’ concerns ultimately proved fruitless. The vote puts the world’s fifth largest economy in uncharted territory with no obvious way forward: exiting the EU without a deal, delaying the March 29 divorce date, a snap election, or even another referendum are all now possible. May's Brexit deal defeated by 149 votes (Live replay)

11:54:50
BRITAIN was tonight plunged into chaos once again as MPs voted to kill off Theresa May's Brexit deal by 391 votes to 242. Now 993 days after the referendum, and with just 17 days before Brexit, Brits are still in the dark about when or if we will ever leave the EU. Furious MPs blasted the uncertainty - saying the "wretched soap opera of Brexit continues" as the country heads "back to square one". Parliament has repeatedly voted against Mrs May's strategy for leaving the EU on March 29. But without a clear alternative on the table, the latest defeat opens the door to a range of wildly different outcomes - from a cliff-edge No Deal to a second referendum which could cancel Brexit entirely. Tomorrow MPs will vote on whether Britain should quit the EU without a deal in 17 days' time. But they are expected to oppose the idea - and will instead back a delay to Brexit in a further vote likely to take place on Thursday. Tory MP Bob Seely, who voted for the deal, warned that tonight's result would "prolong the Brexit purgatory" and "grab defeat from the jaws of victory". He added: "This entire episode is becoming a shambles that reflects appallingly on this current House of Commons. There are now no good options." And Lib Dem Layla Moran, a backer of the pro-EU Best for Britain group, told The Sun: "The Prime Minister has failed the country. Three years on and we're back to square one. It's humiliating." She said Mrs May should "hang her head in shame" and called for an immediate delay to the Article 50 process... Parliament to vote again on Brexit - BBC News

15:50
The British government has confirmed that parliament will vote on Brexit again on Friday, but only on one part of the deal reached with the European Union. Members of parliament will vote on the withdrawal agreement including the Irish 'backstop', divorce bill and citizens' rights. But it will not amount to a third 'meaningful vote' on the deal, as it will not include a vote on the UK's future relationship with the EU. Meanwhile the British Chambers of Commerce said MPs need to stop “chasing rainbows” when it comes to resolving the Brexit impasse. At their annual conference, they said the Brexit uncertainty is already doing “real world damage” to the UK economy. The 29th March was meant to be the day that Britain left the European Union. The BBC has been talking to voters in Weston-Super-Mare in North Somerset, where like the UK as a whole, they voted 52 to 48 in favour of Leaving. Laura Kuenssberg, Emma Vardy, Simon Jack, John Pienaar and Ed Thomas report for the BBC News at Ten, presented by Sophie Raworth. Please subscribe HERE http://bit.ly/1rbfUog

MPs vote on No Deal Brexit | 13.03.19 Live replay (part 2)

07:51:31
THERESA May was today hit by a Brexiteer rebellion as more than a dozen ministers teamed up to hijack the crunch vote on No Deal. The PM will tonight enrage many Tory MPs by backing a delay to our EU exit - rather than quitting without a deal on March 29. Even Mrs May's allies admitted the move will massively split the party - complaining: "We're totally f***ed." Hours before the vote, Mrs May was forced into a climbdown over a Brexiteer "Plan B" as ministers warned her they would quit if ordered to vote against it. As many as 15 members of the Government told the PM she must offer a free vote on an amendment which would see Britain strike a transition agreement with the EU even in a No Deal scenario. Pro-Brexit ministers are furious that Remainers have had their own way in Cabinet over recent months. The clash is a sign of how powerless Mrs May is to hold her warring Government together even as the clock ticks on the Brexit process. After last night's crushing defeat for the PM's Brexit deal, Parliament will today vote on whether or not to approve a No Deal exit in 16 days' time... Brexit: UK Lawmakers vote on alternative EU divorce options

05:11:06
British lawmakers were preparing to vote Wednesday on multiple options for leaving the European Union as they sought to bring some clarity to the country's tortured Brexit process. In the wake of two overwhelming defeats for Prime Minister Theresa May's withdrawal agreement with the EU, the House of Commons has taken control of the parliamentary timetable on Wednesday in the hope of finding a way through the impasse. Lawmakers are holding a five-hour debate on a wide range of Brexit alternatives, after which they will be asked to vote for all of the options they could accept. The plan is for the most popular ideas to move to a second vote on Monday to find one option that can command a majority. The debate comes two days after lawmakers took control of the parliamentary agenda away from the government amid alarm that Britain was heading toward a chaotic Brexit within weeks with no exit plan in place. May has said she will consider the outcome of the "indicative votes," though she has refused to be bound by the result. MPs vote down all four alternatives to PM's Brexit deal

01:14
Britain’s exit from the EU remains deadlocked on Monday night after MPs failed to back either a soft Brexit or a referendum in sufficient numbers to forge a cross-party alternative to Theresa May’s Brexit deal. The government is still trying to build support for the prime minister’s deal, which has been rejected three times by parliament. Britain is due to leave the EU on 12 April without an agreement unless it passes a divorce deal or secures a further extension from the bloc Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub Brexit: Barnier says extending article 50 again to help UK would pose 'significant risks' to EU - live news ► https://www.theguardian.com/politics/blog/live/2019/apr/02/brexit-latest-news-live-cabinet-theresa-may-barnier-says-extending-article-50-again-to-help-uk-would-pose-significant-risks-to-eu-live-news Support the Guardian ► https://support.theguardian.com/contribute Today in Focus podcast ► https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/todayinfocus The Guardian YouTube network: The Guardian ► http://www.youtube.com/theguardian Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► http://is.gd/guardianfootball Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► http://is.gd/guardianculture

MPs to vote again on Brexit options

18:15
MPs have another chance to change the direction of Brexit tonight. (Subscribe: https://bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe) They will vote in an hour's time on four alternative options to Theresa May's deal. All the motions in tonight's second round of indicative votes would soften Brexit - and range from stopping it altogether to staying in both the customs union and single market. The Labour party says it will support that last option, but Brexit-supporting Conservatives say it would be a betrayal of the referendum result and their own manifesto. A deeply divided cabinet has been instructed not to vote. ----------------------- Get more news at our site - https://www.channel4.com/news/ Follow us: Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Channel4News/ Twitter - https://twitter.com/Channel4News

MPs reject No Deal Brexit on April 12 by one vote

03:23
THERESA May was humiliated by MPs yet again tonight as they forced her to delay Brexit further - officially snatching control of our EU exit from her. In the last of a set of knife-edge votes this evening MPs opted by 313 votes to 312 to push through a controversial power grab bill drawn up by Remainer rebels. The rebel plot led by Labour's Yvette Cooper and Tory Sir Oliver Letwin succeeded at 11.20pm in a night of high drama in the Commons. In yet another headache for Mrs May, it will effectively force her to rule out No Deal by getting her to seek another extension to Article 50. A series of attempts by ministers and Brexiteer Tory MPs to hijack and derail it with votes throughout the evening all failed. The Lords will now try to rush the bill through on Thursday, making it law as early as tomorrow evening. Arch Eurosceptic Mark Francois raged at Labour MPs: “You’ve rammed a bill through Parliament in barely four hours. That’s not a considered debate, that’s a constitutional outrage”. Tories were furious with the plot, and accused them of going back on their promises to British voters. MP Tom Pursglove said: "I’m staggered by the number of MPs who are so willing to go back on their promises. Depressing." And Rachel Maclean raged: "It is making a mockery of our parliamentary and constitutional process and it is simply an attempt to overturn #Brexit by MPs who do not respect democracy." 14 Tories voted for the plot - including former ministers Alistair Burt, Steve Brine and Richard Harrington. Serial Brexit rebels Ken Clarke, Dominic Grieve and Justine Greening backed it too. But 9 Labour MPs - mostly in Brexit-backing seats - chose to take a stand and vote it down. Earlier in the day a motion to have the debate and push the Bill through also won by just a single vote in a sign of how constantly divided the Commons is over leaving the EU. But the wind was taken out of the rebel plotter's sails after Mrs May said last night she was going to seek another delay anyway. In a TV statement she announced she would have to seek more time from the EU when she meets leaders next week. That’s not a considered debate, that’s a constitutional outrage Tory MP Mark Francois And in a major shift she revealed she would work with Jeremy Corbyn to try and force a deal over the line - sparking outrage in her own party that Brexit is likely to be watered down. Ms Cooper said this evening that her bill would allow "more clarity" for what a delay would look like and would ensure Britain did not accidentally leave without a deal, which would lead to higher prices for ordinary Brits. She said: "The Bill simply provides for a simple, practical and transparent process to underpin the Prime Minister's plan. "It makes sure the extension has the support of the House of Commons but also that we keep that parliamentary safeguard in place." But the Government voted against the plans, with Steve Barclay calling them "constitutionally irregular" and "rushed through". Minister Robin Walker said the PM had already promised an extension and therefore the bill wasn't needed at all. And Tory Brexiteers warned of fear-mongering reports about No Deal - and pointed out that after we voted to Leave, Britain survived just fine. MP John Baron said this evening: "If we want to respect the referendum result and our own election manifestos, we should be leaving the EU on 12 April on No Deal WTO terms if we can’t agree a deal before then." The debate tonight came just minutes after Speaker Bercow intervened for the first time in order to stop yet more indicative votes on Brexit - after the vote came to a tie. Bill to stop no-deal Brexit passes with majority of one vote

00:47
The House of Commons has approved legislation to prevent a potentially disorderly Brexit departure next week without a deal being reached. Yvette Cooper's bill forces prime minister Theresa May to extend the 12 April deadline if no deal has been agreed. It passed its third reading by a majority of only one vote, 313 votes to 312. It now has to pass the upper chamber, the House of Lords. May said she would seek another short extension to Brexit beyond 12 April in order to try and work with Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn to get her thrice-rejected Brexit deal approved by parliament Subscribe to Guardian News on YouTube ► http://bit.ly/guardianwiressub Brexit: bill to prevent no-deal passes Commons by one vote ► https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2019/apr/03/mps-pass-motion-to-debate-article-50-extension-by-one-vote Support the Guardian ► https://support.theguardian.com/contribute Today in Focus podcast ► https://www.theguardian.com/news/series/todayinfocus The Guardian YouTube network: The Guardian ► http://www.youtube.com/theguardian Owen Jones talks ► http://bit.ly/subsowenjones Guardian Football ► http://is.gd/guardianfootball Guardian Sport ► http://bit.ly/GDNsport Guardian Culture ► http://is.gd/guardianculture

MPs have voted against all eight options under the indicative votes process. Notably this means that the UK will not the European Union without a deal on April 12. BERCOW BREXIT ALARM: Speaker uses casting vote, says NO - We don't want more indicative votes at all

08:30
House of Commons Speaker John Bercow has made a rare intervention in a Brexit debate after a vote on whether to hold more indicative votes dramatically ended in a tie. MPs were voting on whether time should be put aside on Monday for MPs to have another chance to try and find a majority for a Brexit deal. After MPs voted 310 in favour of more votes to 310 against, the Speaker was forced to intervene and cast the deciding vote. This meant the amendment, tabled by Hilary Benn, on paving the way for a third round of votes on Brexit alternatives was defeated by 311 voted to 310, majority one. Siding against calls for more votes, Mr Bercow said: “We don’t want more at all.” #Brexit #JohnBercow #MisterSpeaker
