I remember when everybody I knew could quote this whole song. He made songs that are easy to play with minimal skill; so his music was part of the air.

Once upon a time you dressed so fine You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you? People'd call, say, "Beware doll, you're bound to fall" You thought they were all kiddin' you You used to laugh about Everybody that was hangin' out Now you don't talk so loud Now you don't seem so proud About having to be scrounging around For your next meal How does it feel? How does it feel To be without a home With no direction home? Like a complete unknown? Like a rolling stone? You've gone to the finest school all right, Miss Lonely But you know you only used to get juiced in it Nobody has ever taught you how to live on the street And you find out now you're gonna have to get used to it You said you'd never compromise With the mystery tramp, but now you realize He's not selling any alibis As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes And say, "Would you like to make a deal?" How does it feel? How does it feel To be without a home With no direction home? Like a complete unknown? Like a rolling stone? You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns When they all come down and did tricks for you You never understood that it ain't no good You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat Ain't it hard when you discover that He really wasn't where it's at? After he's taken everything he could steal How does it feel? How does it feel To be without a home With no direction home? Like a complete unknown? Like a rolling stone? Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people They're all drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made Exchanging all precious gifts and things But you'd better take your diamond ring, better pawn it babe You used to be so amused At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal How does it feel? How does it feel To be without a home With no direction home? Like a complete unknown? Like a rolling stone?

And you ask am I an anthropologist? I once was a student of Franz Boas, after I read one of his speeches about humanity coming before patriotism I became a fan of everything he did and studied including the NW Coast Indians and their art. I studied and copied their art for years as well as reading ethnographic texts, and may have became an anthropologist in college instead of a botanist, but I didn't want to dig in people's graves. Most of what anthropology is in North America- as far as field work and actual jobs outside of teaching at a college- is just that. Digging in graves, and someone else's ancestors, and I just didn't feel comfortable with that. My minor was in anthropology. When I worked for the BLM in Idaho I would find archaeological sites all the time no one else had ever known about- rock quarries, graves, hunting blinds and that kind of thing. They loved having me work for them because I did many extra things like that- and the only anthropologists they could hire never made it out of the office because they had too much paperwork to do. After studying NW Coast art for a long time- I never did master it. But I know a master and a masterpiece of the art form. I know the forms. I know the building blocks of how it all works and what the major motifs that repeat again and again are. And the Chinese artifacts I've been studying that the Han Chinese call "Hongshan"- which are really proto-Chinese people before they split off into various unintelligible linguistic factions - are who I think are the ancestors of the NW Coast Indians. There are many, many similarities, and the NW Coast Indians have always remained an anomaly in the North American Indian world- with far more sophisticated with wood carving, building, social hierarchies and laws than anyone else. And these people whom the present day Chinese now rob could have actually sailed here to North America and sailed back, and/or to Central America and South America as well and influenced their cultures. Wouldn't that be the greatest story ever? But like I said, they are being robbed and their archaeological remains sold as fake and scattered to the four winds of the earth. Their story will never be told. And all I can do is just be an armchair anthropologist, and speculate- https://lootingchina.wordpress.com/ancient-chinese-first-discoverers-of-north-america/

Well, damn...if all those ancient peoples hadn't buried everything, we wouldn't have to dig it back up. It's like I told my Grandma when she was a-hidin' those Easter eggs.

It is rumored that this song was written about one-time debutante Edie Sedgwick, who was part of artist Andy Warhol's crowd. She was the subject of an emotional tug-of-war between the Dylan camp and the Warhol camp. The song includes accusatory lines about Warhol and the way he mistreated the girl: Ain't it hard when you discover that He really wasn't where it's at After he took from you everything he could steal https://media.vanityfair.com/photos/5a2829f8c907581c4e97c31e/master/w_768,c_limit/andy-and-edie-holiday-2018-ss14.jpg

For more than 2 generations I lived next door to a supposedly 'elite' private girls school. You have no idea just how true this song rings. You can't acquire class, morals or intelligence just by paying a shitload in school fees. St.L's

One of the most thoughtful records ever written. The man is a master of lyrics and poetry and an amazing musician/performer.

Dylan has written hundreds of songs, many of them important, but I don't remember him singing the others with the kind of passion he shows here. I think he knew he was onto something
