Why The "GREEN BEAUTY" Movement Is PISSING ME OFF

711 ratings | 11291 views
Why the green beauty movement is pissing me off. How greenwashing is happening in the beauty industry, and how natural makeup and skincare brands are selling products to look eco-friendly or natural when they might not be all that they claim. Defining natural and organic, as well as exploring how chemicals are being demonized. A pissed off rant about the green beauty industry. I can’t stand greenwashing! As far as clean/green beauty goes, I try to only shop with trusted brand I’ve researched or with stores like Credo or the Detox Market that have done the research for me!

My favorite low waste makeup company is Elate, they are amazing. Some green skincare can be found in glass wich is nice. I’d love for you to continue featuring zero waste or low waste cosmetics
Hope Kitten (1 day ago)
What pisses me off in the “green” community is that most companies are not worried about making their packaging sustainable. Some do though
Mel Dempsey (2 days ago)
Recycled packaging is great. An even better approach is for these big box stores to start accepting empty containers being returned to their stores. The empties can be shipped back to the manufacturers for cleaning and reuse. I say this because a lot of companies use specialize colours that aren’t actually recyclable in municipal programs. Like black plastic. Tressemé uses black for a lot of their bottles. Black coloured plastic can only be recycled into things that are black.

Does anyone know whether Pacifica products are as "natural" as they promote them to be? I've been wondering about this for a while!

BeautyCounter is doing amazing things in legislation and education. Thoughts? Also Bare Minerals. Thanks!

100% Pure products- they seem to have a good model and social responsible, but I am always very skeptical of "natural" and "organic" products.

something that I really hope people begin to think about is the ingredients in beauty products and their effect on the enviornment!! I love love love how you mentioned that!! im so happy to have found a channel that is also interested in the science behind beauty!!

When you said Lush and asbestos, I froze the flip up. I have this weird skin reoccurrence and want a natural product to also assist with acne or aging skin; so much to ask right? I also just got diagnosed with COPD from bring overly exposed to 2nd and 3rd hand, which is where my fear comes in for stuff known to cause respiratory complications, like asbestos. So back to Lush, it's scary too because I have a love for bath bombs and certain products, I've tried samples, it's like me being a child looking at a candy store and the candy are shaped as crossbones. Feed back is appreciated.

My mom started using Beauty Counter products which promises all natural ingredients with no harsh chemicals. Their stuff looks legit but after watching this video and learning what “natural” actually means, I’m questioning the validity of BC’s claims. Would you mind making a video on it please?

I love Lemongrass Spa! What are your thoughts with that company?
juustop (9 days ago)
Yeah, those brands were never green, they're totally greenwashing... Lush is only vegan (which is fucking great) but they are SO greenwashing it makes me so disappointed. Neutrogena, like you said, get the fuck out. Tests on animals, absolutely not green, I mean...
RaeCharles394 (9 days ago)
Have you heard of Ethique? I don't know about how Green they claim to be, but they are adamant about zero waste packaging. I'd love to hear your thoughts on them.
greenest12 (9 days ago)
Hey! Lush employee here. Completely understandable where you’re coming from, however Lush does not claim to be 100% natural. All of our products use ingredients that have been tested on volunteer humans and approved by the FDA! The sulfates we use in our products are naturally sourced. I think that every company should make their ingredients a little more available, just letting you know what’s going on!

That "natural" crap, which has no definition, has pissed me off for years. When I was a Beauty Adviser there was not one "natural" product I would recommend because they always contained skin irritating ingredients.

What do you think about the apps? Such as EWG verified, Think Dirty, detox me..etc I personally enjoy them. That's how I shop. Also, there is a page on Facebook "I read labels" that breaks down ingredients and helps you understand why the ingredient is good or bad.

WAIT. Kiehl's never claims to be "natural". It's originally a pharmacy, so the focus is on curative effective products WITH natural ingredients, possibly in high concentration, but NEVER claims to be natural. 100% natural products can actually react really badly, Kiehl's is all about sensitive skin instead.

I recently bought the Lush cup o coffee mask and the mask of magnanimity mask because I thought that it would help with my acne but they only made my acne worse. I wonder why. Are there pore clogging ingredients in it and does it make a lot of other people break out worse as well? It makes me wonder. Now I have two full masks and money down the drain. I thought that Lush would be better than drugstore products but it’s not.

Europe bans all kinds of things for no good reason. Like what they've done to the fragrance industry. I usually find greenwashing annoying because the easiest way for brands to do it is throw something irritating like bergamot oil in a face cream and take out the non "natural" ingredients that actually work. It's 2019. I'm not going to put crushed berries and citrus on my face like it's the dark ages. But yes, it is even more infuriating to think they're doing this disingenuously as a marketing thing and actually delivering what no one wants.
Something else that’s difficult for me is companies that use biodegradable packaging. It’s a great idea but in my town, I have to throw them away in the trash. Because my city’s compost facility can’t break them down. And my backyard compost doesn’t get hot enough to break down “compostable” forks or bottles. 😢

Well? I have nodular and cystic acne? and I use actually honey and yogurt as a mask..... as well as just 💯 Aloe Vera. I agree with you! COMPLETELY! You need to make sure what your putting into or onto your body is SAFE! I’ve went through issues with my skin since I was 12, that’s only gotten WORSE AND WORSE as I have aged and gotten older. I started actually PAYING ATTENTION! to everything that was going onto my skin, as well as into my body. Nobody in the area of beauty products or skin care actually care, and the types that are good, well let’s face it! they’re basically way too expensive for most average people. I can afford them, but at the end of the day and all that money spent if I’m still having so many issues with my skin..... then it’s not worth it to me to purchase, and I only give products I will go 4weeks the way I normally live then I’ll do 4weeks of ensuring my gut is at its peak to work. If it isn’t working by then. I know it’s not me, and GOODBYE! I’ll always bad mouth them and their issues and being in the health field..... I always have to give advice and ALOT of people look at my skin. I’m 32, with three kids, @175lbs. I’m pretty thick, but I put pride into my body especially into the care and maintenance of my skin, having issues and even being told by my husband when we were first dating that all the scars all over my body were from acne, still suffering from it as well while I cried is HARD! especially after making the joke of “what kind of scars, were you hit with buckshot”? 😳🥺🥺. Needless to say the way people don’t look at your eyes when talking, small jokes, the glances, even people asking my husband if I’m on some type of drugs! ITS CRUEL AND IT SUCKS! I’m happy for finding Korean skin care, natural ingredients found from home to make things work..... as well as my medication of myorisan from my dermatologist and adding in some T.V.T due to T.V. which..... my dermatologist didn’t even know about allegedly. He stated I would have to go through laser treatments, and although I’m all for aggressive txs. when needed. There are some other things to at least be recommended as to enhance the help of what I know already I will need at the latter stages. Anyways, I just wanna say..... YOU’RE amazingly smart, beautiful, and your advice is WELL looked at by a lot of us out here! we can tell you have real issues like the rest of us, not just another “flawless” face trying to put up all these brands to help. I just wish you would try some more very organic ways? Things available around the house. I’m a nurse? But, easier is always more appreciated by any mom out here lol! Even with a husband...... they’re just another kid basically 😆 sorry fellas but y’all like ur games, and to stay out with friends and outside as excuses to not help with the kids or be around the craziness of them Hahahaha! We mainly just go with the flow because fighting with the only other main person in our lives closest to our ages, it truly isn’t worth the argument or we’re too dang TIRED! Hahahaha! U win, just go! I love that you’ve kept at the advice giving after you recurved you’re degrees, and keep it coming! There’s a lot of what they claim “green that ISNT CLEAN”! Hahahaha. You get em’ girl! Stay Gorgeous, Stay Truthful, most of all keep that advice coming. Tx. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

I love Lush’s package and cruelty free initiatives too! I still use some Lush products and actually used to work there. But, I’ve started to decrease the amount of products I buy there for many of the reasons you mentioned in this video. Lush doesn’t actually market themselves as ‘natural’, but ‘fresh and handmade’. Many Lush products contain SLS, synthetic fragrance, synthetic dyes, petrochemicals, and parabens in their products. These ingredients are found in everything from their body lotions to shampoo bars. I can’t justify shopping there anymore as I find their sales tactics quite misleading to the public. There are so many great alternatives in local soap companies, I now take my business elsewhere.
Domi Domi (13 days ago)
Yves Rocher. They piss me off sooooo much! I used their skin care in the past and it was good. But then I switched everything I use to cruelty free stuff (now being on a jurney to have all the products vegan), so Yves Rocher had to go. And they always talk about nature and bla bla bla... Apparently they even own a botanical garden that anyone can visit. Yet still they are not cf and I am wondering about how much green their products really are... I agreee about Lush, and not only about the ingredents, but I.... I just don't understand why my skincare should have glitters in it. Like, I bought that Rump butt cream for my mum and it has some gold glitters or whatever on the top. I understand it looks nice, but why?! You don¨t need golden butt. Thankfuly it is only on the top. Also, can you please do a review of 100% Pure? I have their coffee eye cream and it works so well, so I wonder what other produsts are good?

Ugh, geen washing sucks! It's so shady. Loved the video! A question, though: Lush says (at least on the Austrian website) "handmade cosmetics", which doesn't imply "natural" for me. And they list clearly natural ingredients and synthetic in the ingredients list. So for me, there was never a confusion regarding to whether they were 100% natural. I never considered them being a natural brand, just a very ethical brand we all love. Do they claim somewhere they're all natural? Or did you mean that even listing some of the according to them natural ingredients are not so natural?
TamTam (13 days ago)
Yes ... PREACH!!!! I agree with you 100%!
Katie Pecotich (13 days ago)
I love lush too & they are so good with packaging, ethics, vegan, cruelty free etc, but yeah the ingredients are sometimes questionable, their "self preserving" stuff is usually tops!!
kcs (13 days ago)
What also annoys me is the demonizing of synthetics and "chemicals". Something being natural doesn't mean it's good for you, nor does something being synthetic mean it's bad. I use niacinamide and retinoids, both synthetics, and nothing natural is going to have the same effect on my skin. I do also use certified organic and eco-friendly skincare oils, but damn does it grind my gears when people try to guilt-trip me for not SOLELY using natural products.
Steffi S (13 days ago)
Wondering if you don't have labels for certified natural cosmetics in the US? Because in Germany (and pretty much all of Europe as far as I know) we have such labels. Just like for "Organic". It makes it pretty easy to recognize if a brand is greenwashing or really lives up to a high standard. There are still brands that are great and don't have that label, but mostly handmade ones that you only find online. Do you know the brand Sudsatorium? I believe they are located in Canada and they are very much like Lush, but much more natural. Also cruelty free, handmade, vegan friendly, recycling. Maybe you could check them out :)

Can you please do another video on facial sunscreens that are unscented and use the sunscreenr to test them all out on video? I just recently stumbled across a post on r/SkincareAddiction and would love to see you use this tool the og poster used to test the best sunscreens for normal and sensitive skin! I recently was in a pinch and picked up a tube of Neutrogena 110 spf facial sunscreen that messed me up FOR HOURS, the scent this stuff had was atrocious, my eyes were red and watering nonstop, and raw, not long after applying it and my skin hated it! Ruined my time with family for almost 2 hours. Like WHYYYY would they fragrance a facial sunscreen!? WHY!? Why would “natural” cosmetics be better? If a product contains a plant/fruit/flower/whatever extract you can never know what it really has in it, it can be hundreds of different substances that interact in different ways with your skin, you don’t know if it can penetrate your skin barrier, cell membranes, get into the bloodstream, how it is going to interact with your immune system. Synthetic ingredients are a lot safer, they have already been studied, we know what concentrations to use to make them work and not be dangerous, and if you happen to have a bad reaction it is easyer to find out what is causing it because you know what you are putting in your face.
Someone :) (12 days ago)
But plant extracts are studied too...?

Hi Cassandra, good video, as always!! Personally, I don't wear makeup, just because I am always weary what the hell is in these products!! I really look on the back label... especially if the product says it is natural!!! I try to use products, which my granny used, and at 90 yrs, she had beautiful skin, never wore makeup only a simple oil and cream!!! I'm happy I can still get this cream to this day, and the back label is legitimate!!! If I had listened to my granny back then, I think I would not have had skin issues!! She was a gift and minimalist!!! Thank you Cassandra and much love and strength to you!! I deeply admire your courage and knowledge from the ❤️🦋🙏🏼🙏🏼🤗😘😘💝

I think the focus should shift from "natural" products to quality ingredients! Natural doesn't mean shit, the worst poisons are all natural and water is poisonous if you drink too much. And for sensitive skin, pure and sometimes lab-made ingredients are more safe. It's all 👏 about 👏 the 👏dosage 👏! Love your channel, you're such a beautiful human being

Greenwashing is a real thing, and until if and when the word “natural” can be better regulated it’s up to consumers to understand what it means. Love Yes To and Juice Beauty! They are so widely available now too, hopefully more brands can follow their example.

There are 3 brands I've fallen in love with, although I'm not completely sure about the ingredients as I see quite a lot on the labels. First is Juice, I know you've mentioned it so relieved about that, 2nd and 3rd I'm not really sure if you'd even get them your side, the names are Esse and Skoon. I have never used a product which makes my skin feel the way Skoon does, anytime I've bought them as a present for someone they have fallen madly in love with the product, I don't have words to describe how this product makes my skin feel! But, I do see a lot of ingredients on the label, although they pride themselves as being natural. http://www.skoonskin.co.za/ https://www.esseskincare.com/

I’m wondering why we aren’t banning more products? Are our standards just that low or? I’d like to find out more on that subject. I don’t think it’s fair to consumers to be sold things that are horrible for us, and it be legal. Not everyone has the research background, resources, etc to be able to differentiate the good wholesome products from the toxic ones. Thanks for your videos! You’re the best! I appreciate you! ❤️
