Lauren is an Environmental Studies graduate from NYU and former Sustainability Manager at the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and the amount of trash that she has produced over the past three years can fit inside of a 16 oz. mason jar.
Lauren Singer is author of the Zero Waste blog, Trash is for Tossers and founder of organic cleaning product company, The Simply Co.
Through her blog, she has empowered millions of readers to produce less waste by shopping package-free, making their own products and refusing plastic and single-use items.
Her work has been profiled by New York Magazine, MSNBC, NBC, AOL, CNN, Yahoo, Fox Business, BBC and NPR, among others.

On the flight over to do your Ted talk, did you eat or drink nothing? Or did they pour the gin straight into your mouth, teppanyaki'd your meal right onto your tray from whence you ate it with your hands?
Sorry your doctor convinced you need SSRIs to "survive." Find another doctor who understands plant-based nutrition and the immune system to wean you off of those and fix the underlying cause. They do immense damage to the brain the longer you take them that will be hard to reverse.
people dont realize that doing one little thing a day can make a huge difference. an example being that at school, i sort everyones recycle, and take their compost, put in a container and bring it to my compost box. in the long run these actions make an impact.
i support and understand about zero waste concept . but today world economy will collapse if everyone turn to zero waste . this world economy is basic on human greed and being wasteful
one good example will be Macdonald just having 1 meal with Macdonald and see how much waste u produce and imagine how many meals Macdonald sell in a day worldwide
Just reducing waste is not the solution. The long term solution is developing a recyclable material technology which all food containers, expendable and clothing can be produced in. That way when the contents are consumed, the 'material' (which is not PE) can be recycled 100% for the next product.
+haley storm ughh :( yea i've heard that. the only thing i'm kinda managing to do is to not use plastic water bottles (which seem to be the most ridiculous use of plastic right now for me) but still they should be recycled! reuse, recycle, reduce!
Julie Kang Even if you recycle your plastics, there is a limit to how many times you can recycle them. For instance, plastic water bottles can only be recycled once or twice before going to the landfill. That is why plastic is not zero waste! :)
I just wonder how much time do you have for joy if you have to do everything yourself... That sounds inspiring but too much effort added to your work if you have a real one... I don't think the best way to deal with waste is becoming self sufficient, we are interdependent not independent... If we agree and cooperate to become a zero waste society it would work, but I don't think you can keep like this alone forever... Thanks for your advice but I don't buy it
The planet is not dying lol even if we nuke the world we go most plants and animals will go but 50 to 100 millions years later and it will be a new world totally different to the one we see, look into the history of the planet it's happened many times
I’ve always liked her but I think she needs to realize that her lifestyle is not attainable for MOST people. She lives in NYC where there’s so many shops, you can walk/ take public transit, she has no partner, no children, no pets. Not everyone has that lifestyle. No shame to anyone I just think she needs to be more realistic.
Lauren, you are admirable. I have a couple of questions... Are you able to buy all the ingredients for your homemade beauty products in bulk?
Also, what do you do when you travel somewhere in which the tap water is not recommended for drinking? Do you bring a filter?
On her youtube channel and blog she uses alot of coconut oil. That comes in a jar. Jars can then be cleaned and you can take them and put your bulk products like tea leaves or nuts or coffe grounds in them. She also uses alot of baking soda, which can come in fully cardbaord packaging, and can be fully recycled. For your second question, there are certain bottles that have filters, but i dont know if she uses them 💜
Just watched 60 minutes Australia about the recycling lie. Most of Australia's plastic waste is being shipped to Malaysia illegally to be processed in illegal facilities. The impact on the environment is devastating. It is time we took responsibility for our waste. It is not being recycled effectively. Most of it is going to landfill, being burnt or worse it's ending up disposed off illegally in our oceans, rivers or dumped elsewhere. We've got to stop wasting resources and make better use of them including using plastics responsibly. This was a great talk with step by step life style changes. I believe we can all make the small changes that can make a big difference. Thank you for pointing us in a better direction.
I'm sorry, but I think that in order to live this lifestyle you have to
a. have access to fresh foods,
and b, have direct access to generally anything locally made.
I definitely couldn't live this way. All the food here has to be imported. Same with all products (Including the products used to make your own product). You can't even grow your own food here because we have bad soil and the climate is too dry. Even so, I try to grow zucchini, tomatoes, squash and most my herbs. No, it isn't cost efficient to do that here, and I think it's a bit naive to say that as a global community, we should all aim to achieve this.
All this to say, I really respect her and what she was able to achieve. I hope that in the future, we are able to create a more sustainable way for us all to live. 💕
I am really impressed with you. Because right now I start to live a zero watse lifestyle. However I live in suburban site, developing country, there are many impediments but when I follow this style I see that nothing is impossible. It’s totally depend on us, what we want and how we feel when we participate in this 09 lifestyle.
